JGP Austria Men's Preview

The men's field here at Linz is definitely not as strong as the men's fields were at Courchevel and Lake Placid. Consequently, I think Ryuju Hino, the bronze medallist from Courchevel, has a very good chance to win here. The two skaters vying for the silver and bronze are two youngsters who have never competed in a JGP before, Jin Seo Kim of Korea, and Nathen Chen of the USA. It is difficult to predict their scores, since they have never competed on the JGP, Nathan because this is the first year he has been eligible for the JGP. Nathan has been working on his triple axel. If he tries it, he may well miss it, as he did in some summer competitions in the USA. None the less, he is a charming, crowd pleasing skater, even though he is very small. While Jin Seo Kim has not competed on the JGP, he is an experienced performer with Yu Na Kim's All That Skate Ice show, and is the Korean Senior Champion. Behind these three skaters, there are a large group of skaters whose personal best scores are in the 160's if achieved internationally, or a little higher, if achieved in their own national competitions. If I had to pick one dark horse from that group, it would be Feodosiy Efremenkov RUS. His scores in Russian competitions have been much better than his Youth Olympic score. If those scores are a better representation of his skill, he might snag the bronze.

Feodosiy's ISU bio has not been updated with his music.
His coach is Alla Ivanova, but he was previously Nikolai Morosov until this summer..
Feodosiy is 16.
His personal best in ISU competition was 163.46, achieved at the Youth Olympics in 2012, where he finished third..
He placed fourth at the Russian Junior Nationals. His best National Level Score was at Spartakiad of Youth, where he finished first in Juniors : 197.34.

There are 32 ladies competing at JGP Linz. It's a huge field comprising skaters with a wide range of abilities. Elena Radionova should easily win this competition, but it's difficult to know who should win the silver or the bronze.

There are four ladies who have done really well in summer competitions, but who have either had injuries to recover from or are relatively unknown. Samantha Cesario USA appears to have recovered from her injuries and won the Libery Open in summer competition. Hannah Miller USA skated really really well at Skate Detroit. Maria Stavitskaia RUS did a really good job at the Russian Cup Test Skate earlier this month. Hinano Isobe JPN recently won the bronze at the Asian Figure Skating Trophy. And then there's Hae Jin Kim KOR who skated well last season, beating So Youn Park, who skated so well at Lake Placid JGP. Kim can do all five of the standard ladies' triples, and has done triple toe triple toe and tripleflip triple toe. I would predict that she would take the silver if it were not that she did not compete in the 2012 Asian Trophy.. Now I see her duelling with Hannah Miller for the silver, and if she perhaps is not her best shape, losing the bronze to Cesario in the Long Program.

Risa Shoji JPN could be a dark horse here, too. I would be more enthusiastic about her chances if she had not bombed so badly last year at World Juniors.

She recently placed twelfth at the Asian Figure Skating Trophy. This is her first appearance on the JGP.

Ice is really slippery when it comes to pairs. However, the top places should come down, as they often do, to a competition between the Russian & Chinese teams. The team with the strongest record is without doubt Yu & Jin CHN, who are the reigning Jr. World silver medallists. Their teammates, Li & Jiang, are strong contenders for the bronze. My guess is that one of the three Russian teams, Tudvaseva & Lisiev or Vigalova & Zakroev or Fedorova & Miroshkin, will earn the silver. Tudvaseva & Lisiev have the most experience, but they were behind Blackmer & Simpson USA at the JGPF last year, and only one spot ahead of them at Jr. Worlds. Simpson & Blackmer are an elegant team, but have been a bit lacking in difficulty in their programs.

One thing that can't be overlooked: The required death spiral in the Short Program is the Back Inside. Many of the teams at the last event had problems getting any credit for this element at all. Many of those that received credit, only earned the lowest level. The team that executes this skill well will have a real advantage on the rest of the pack.

They obtained their personal best international score of 139.02 at Tallinn JGP last year, where they won the bronze medal.
They were fourth in Juniors in the US last year, and so did not qualify for junior worlds.
Jessica & Zack finished in second place in the short program at Skate Detroit with a score of 41.71 and in fifth in the long program score of 73.53.

Brianna De La Mora & Taylor Wilson USA

Taylor is 20 and Brianna is 13.

They placed eighth in Juniors at US Nationals last year. This is their international debut.
They placed third in both junior events at Indy Challenge this summer, scoring 41.74 in the short program, and 79.87 in the long program.

Most of the teams who will compete at Linz, Austria are ones we have not seen at the two previous jgp events. There are only two teams at Linz whom we have already seen on the Junior Grand Prix this season: Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron, the winners at Courchevel, and Viktoria Kavaliova & Yurii Bieliaiev, who placed ninth at Courchevel.

Papadakis & Cizeron are perhaps the favorites for the win, but they will have stiff competition from Anna Yanovskaia & Sergei Mozgov, the winners of last year's Youth Olympics 2012 junior dance competition at Innsbruck. Yanovskaia & Mozgov finished just ahead of Papadakis & Cizeron at Junior Worlds last year. In Papadakis & Cizeron's favor is that they have had their Blues Pattern Dance critiqued by international judges, and have had 2 weeks to fix any problems, an opportunity that Yanovskaia & Mozgov had not had.

Behind these two very strong teams are a crop of young teams, and one experienced team: Shari Koch & Christian Nüchtern GER .

I expect to see the fight for the bronze to be between Alexandra Nazarova & Maxim Nikitin of UKR, who won the silver medal at the Youth Olympics, and Maria Simonova & Dmitriy Dragun of RUS, who placed third at the Youth Olympics. These are quite young teams, and might find themselves beaten by experience in the persons of Shari Koch & Christian Nüchtern of Germany. They placed ninth at the World Junior Championships last year, and have a good chance to score well here. I have always liked Shari & Christian's skating, and I'm rooting for them for the bronze.

The Americans (Rachel & Michael Parsons who placed fourth at the Youth Olympic Games, and Whitney Miller & Kyle Macmillan) and the Canadian team (Mackenzie Bent & Garrett McKeen, who won a bronze at JGP Brasov last year) competing here in Austria are very young teams that I do not expect to medal. Of the three, I expect the best placement from Bent & McKeen, who might challenge for the bronze.

A team that might have done better than you'd expect are Kim & Minov of Korea, who train with Zhulin. Although Kim is not yet as accomplished as Minov, their video for the Korean selection committee was quite impressive, in my opinion. Unfortunately, they have been removed from the entry roster.

Again, I expect to see the technical calling of the Blues Pattern Dance key points to have a big impact on the order of finish in the Short Dance.

Their coaches are : Svetlana Alexeeva, Elena Kustarova, & Olga Riabinina, and their choreographer is Elena Kustarova.
Anna & Sergei won the Youth Olympics Games 2012 with their personal best score of 146.96. They qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final last year, winning the silver medal, with a score of 136.61, and finished 4th at Junior Worlds, with a score of 140.63. They also placed 4th at Russian Junior Nationals last year.
