One thing is sure about JGP Croatia: the girl who wins the ladies event will be someone who has never won a JGP event before. Hannah Miller USA and Rika Hongo JPN have both won silver medals at their earlier events this year. If either wins, they will likely make the JGPF. Hannah's score at JGP Austria is about 10 points higher than Rika's at JGP Courchevel, so perhaps Hannah has the edge. If Angela Wang could put together two good skaters, she has a shot too, and as the bronze medallist from Lake Placid, she might make the JGPF as well. And then there is Russia's Anna Pogorilaya whose scores at Russian competitions indicate she might well medal at this, her first ISU competition. Two others to keep an eye for other reasons:

Mimi Tanasorn Chindasook THA has been studying at Ice Castles under Anthony Liu & Frank Carroll. There is a note on her ISU bio:

I didn't know the ISU gave scholarships! There is a grainy little video of her from a show in June, and I'll be interested to see whether Frank & Anthony have done miracles there, and she finishes a bit higher than in the past. It's possible! She looked very good in that show video.


And this is the first ISU competition for any skater from Cyprus, which only got its ISU accreditation in September. Kristina Dubrovskaya CYP is the first skater in the short program here, symbolizing the new beginnings for her federation.

I think I have to say that Nathan Chen USA is the favorite to win this competition, especially so if he lands his triple axels as well as he did at JGP Austria. However, there are other great competitors here, but some with question marks after their names. Han Yan is the reigning World Junior Champion, but he appears to have some issues, which have been gone over one way or the other on Twitter. In any case, he did not medal at JGP Sencila-Bled last week, finishing fifth. Whatever issues he has had, probably will be still there this week. If he can skate at his best, he should win. Maxim Kovtun RUS finished fourth last year at the Junior Grand Prix Final. He has a quad, too. However, he changed coaches this summer amidst a cloud of rumor, and it is not at all clear what condition he is in. If he has returned to decent shape, he should surely medal. Alexander Samarin won the bronze at JGP Sencila-Bled. He is still listed to be here, but is now listed as competing at JGP Chemnitz where the competition is weaker. He is still listed on JGP Croatia's entries as well. If he really were here, he might medal. Jin Seo Kim KOR will definitely be here. He is a fine skater who won the bronze at his JGP debut at JGP Austria. He may well medal here, depending on who shows up and what shape they are in. I would favor him over Samarin, for example. Petr Coufal CZE, Harrison Choate USA, and Michael Christian Martinez BRA, will all be trying to improve on their fourth place finishes in their respective events this season. Any dark horse efforts here should be expected from those three. So JGP Croatia should be an interesting event. It's interesting even before the event, wondering who will be there. I would expect changes, and will update this preview when I hear anything different.

Steven placed second in the Golden Bear of Zagreb competition in 2011 in Advanced Novices, so he is quite new to the junior division.

Petar Cetinic CRO
Petar finished third in the Tivoli Cup in Springs in 2010, and won the Mladost Trophy in Chicks in 2010.
He finished second in Basic Novice B boys at Golden Bear of Zagreb in 2011 (the most recent competition).
This would seem to be his very first event in Juniors anywhere.

I should know better than to make any predictions about pairs at all, especially about junior pairs. When you consider that the World Junior silver medallists, Yu & Jin did not medal in their last event, and that the World bronze medallists, Davankova & Deputat, finished second in theirs, it is obviously difficult to handicap teams based on their previous scores successfully. This year it is harder: the rules for what makes a Back Outside Death Spiral yield you any points are tough, tough, tough this year. The team that succeeds in doing one correctly and for more than level 1 in the short program will have a huge leg up on the other teams.

Considering that Purdy & Marinaro won their previous event, and Aaron & Settlage won the bronze at theirs, you'd think that they would be my top picks, and they are, but I still think that Davankova & Deputat RUS & Yu & Jin CHN have more innate talent than either and should score higher if all teams skate well.

I'm going with Davankova & Deputat first, Purdy Marinaro second, Yu & Jin third, and Aaron & Settlage fourth.

But really, almost any choices could be defended.

This is the second to last JGP. Although I rather expected some switching around of entries, this is the same list of ice dance entries that I saw last week. Kosigina & Moroshkin RUS won the short dance at Lake Placid over Aldridge & Eaton, by hitting all six key points. If they repeat that feat here, they have a chance of being so far ahead after the SD that it will be very hard to catch them. That would leave Zenkova & Sinitisin RUS to settle for silver. Zenkova & Sinitsin won the short dance at Courchevel, but finished second in the free dance there to Papadakis & Cizeron. Bent & McKeen CAN, the bronze medallists at JGP Austria, where they were second in the short dance and third in the free dance might indeed pass Zenkova and Sinitsin for the silver. The two teams are very close in strengths..

All three dance teams did very well in the pattern dance, so that should not be a huge factor in the competition this time.

In case of disaster, some other teams to watch are Nagornyuk & Kovalenko, who finished a strong fourth at JGP Sencila-Bled, Minov & Kim KOR, who are coached by Svinin & Zhuk, and looked very good in their Korean test skate qualifier for the JGP, and Nazarova & Nikitin UKR, who finished fifth at JGP Austria in recovering from a weak short dance performance.

Their international personal best score of 114.22 was achieved at the Youth Olympics Games. They finished in fourth place in Juniors at US Nationals in juniors last season, and placed 15th at Junior Worlds.

Melinda & Andrew are just moving up to the Junior division, and had not competed internationally as of January 2, 2012.. They did compete at Lake Placid IDC this summer, where they finished ninth in their section in the short dance with a score of 36.81, They did not compete in the free dance.

This is a new team, formed after Ilona BIRGELAITE & Aivaras STRAVINSKAS (LTU), the current Lithuanian silver medallists, split up. Sara used to skate in singles up through the Novice level for the Czech Republic.
This is their first international event.
