All well and good (and not especially surprising), but all I gotta say is, their free dance better be a heck of a lot better than that cheesy disco thing they had the nerve to show up and present at SLC. Having them around, though, is going to make the Dance competition even MORE interesting....

That was such a HORRIBLE freedance. What were they thinking skating to that fluff? Though in 2002, all the freedances sucked.

Ya know, I hate to bash skaters, I try to appreciate them all, even ones who are not personal favorites.....but these two, I have NOT missed one bit....I think it's what I've seen of their off-ice persona's in fluff pieces that turn me off....

Is there a 2nd Italian team that does not get to go to the Olympics b/c F-P&M decided to unretire? I assume that Frederika and ? (his name escapes me) secured 2 spots for Italy.

I always feel bad for athletes who think that they have a chance to go to the Olympics and then a former "superstar" decided to come back and they of course get the top spot.

I did enjoy their freedance the year they placed 2nd at worlds. all others..well, I will just not say anything. Next thing I know, I will be torn to bits by Italians

At least their cheesy disco thing was dancing, not political preaching or hair-tearing drama.

Wow, I didn't even realize this was a possibility. I do not follow Dance as closely as the other disciplines, so this comes as quite a surprise. Weren't they the 2001 World Champions? I seem to remember them taking quite a beating during the 2001-2002 season.....and by this, I mean, they fell in the rankings. What happened to them? And, from anyone knowledgable about Dance, is it feasible that they will be competitive?

Well, you know, Barbara F. did say after the season was done, "This past season, we were told [by the ISU] to please do a dance and not a drama. So we did this, as did the Canadians [Shae-Lynn & Vic]; however, the dramas were scored more highly." She did have a legitimate point. I just thought the dance they chose to do was not especially difficult, not particularly well done, cheesy, and well below the level one should expect from reigning World champions.

BronzeIsGolden -- I truly believe that that free dance alone was responsible for their drop in the rankings. I personally believe they have a pretty good chance to be fairly competitive; I would put them, at their top form, among the top 5 in the world (at least based on who's in it now). And being on home ice at the Olys and having some good politics behind them isn't exactly going to hurt, either.

Thanks, Jonny. I will watch for them this season. They will also have more of a chance at a medal if B&A aren't allowed to compete in the Olympics. That sort of adds some excitement to Dance for me.

I can completely see what you are saying here. But, just think of all the great skating moments we would have missed if Gordeyeva & Grinkov and M&D hadn't been allowed to reinstate for Lillehammer. Certainly, Brasseur & Eisler were none too pleased. But, both pairs came back and were competitive. IMO, they were the class of the field and earned their medals. Come to think of it....we haven't had a debate thread on the reinstatement of the professionals in 1994 in quite some time. We should do it again....there are some new faces here.

Well to tell you the truth, I do not enjoy their skating, I never have liked to watch them, so I am not a fan, but that being said, I haven't seen any fluff pieces on them but I have met them before and they were truly the nicest skaters I've ever met (while them and Yagudin) (and I have met a lot). They were a lot of fun to be around, great sense of humour and just very thoughtful. So I don't know why the fluff pieces should make them out as otherwise if this is the case but I hope not... but like I said, I am not a fan of their skating and haven't seen the fluff's.

One funny moment though, I was talking to this girl once, she was quite young about 13 and she had a jacket that was autographed by a whole bunch of skaters, including Maurizio. Anyways, while I was talking Barbara came by and the girl really wanted Barbara's autograph, but Barbara was about to leave because she had practice then. The girl wanted to keep all of her "partner" signatures beside each other but she couldn't find Maurizio's to ask Barbara to sign beside it (Barbara was signing a few of the girls friends stuff while the girl frantically searched the coat for Maurizio's) anyways, Barbara comes to the girl, who still hadn't found the signautre (really, not an easy task, since many of the signatures were near unreadable lol) and thought that Barbara would recognize the signature better than she would so she hands Barbara the coat and says, "Please find Maurizio and sign beside him". Anyways, I guess language and/or Barbara being in a bit of a rush got in the way and Barbara looked at the girl puzzled, but then smiled anyways and walked over to her partner who was over the other side talking to their coach. Stood beside him, signed the coat no where near his signature and then brought it back and gave it to the girl

Italy's top dance team is Faeilla & Scalli. Most likely they'd be in Torino along with FP&M. The interesting this is that the team after that is Aureli & Vaturi, who're coached by Barbara! I wonder how they must feel - to be unable to go to Olympics because of your coach...

Barbara was great, and its nice to have her back, but he wasn't very good and I didn't miss him at all. I guess she just couldn't find a better partner. But will they be able to win the spot on the Olym team? If they do, I wonder if $peedy will again claim that FP&M are the greatest, and should get the gold, as he did at Worlds a few years ago.. Could this be the next scandal to rock the skating world in the making? Even though they aren't the most talented, I think that their style(more like ballroom dancing) may adhere more closly to the rules of ice dance, than some of the other top dance pairs. If thats so, perhaps $peedy may have an angle to work. Whatever happens, I don't think he'll be able to keep his mouth shut, he'll push all the Italian skaters to the top if he can.
