November 1st

No sun—no moon—no morn—no noon,
No dawn—no dusk—no proper time of day,
No warmth—no cheerfulness—no healthful ease,
No road, no street, no t’ other side the way,
No comfortable feel in any member—
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,
November!

Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.

For fidelity, devotion, love, many a two-legged animal is below the dog and the horse. Happy would it be for thousands of people if they could stand at last before the Judgment Seat and say "I have loved as truly and I have lived as decently as my dog." And yet we call them "only brutes".
~ Henry Ward Beecher

November 6 - 12 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Here's a site with more information.

While day by day the overzealous student stores up facts for future use, He who has learned to trust nature finds need for ever fewer external directions. He will discard formula after formula, until he reaches the conclusion: Let nature take its course. By letting each thing act in accordance with its own nature, everything that needs to be done gets done.

The future does not belong to those who are content with today, apathetic toward common problems and their fellow man alike, timid and fearful in the face of bold projects and new ideas. Rather, it will belong to those who can blend passion, reason and courage in a personal commitment to the ideals of American society.

The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.

The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest - but the myth - persistent, persuasive and realistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears.

November 11th - Armistace - Veterans - Remembrance Day

These heros are dead. They died for liberty, they died for us. They are at rest.. They sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, the embrtacing vines. They sleep beneath the shadow of the clouds, carleless alike of sunshine or storm, each in the windowless palace of rest. Earth may run red with other wars they are at peace. In the midst of the battles, in roar of conflicts, they found the serenity of death.
- - Author Unknown

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918, the order to 'cease fire' was issued and started the process of bringing World War I to a close. The .Allied and Central Powers signed an armistice agreement at 5 am in Marshal Foch’s railway car in the Forest of Compiegne, France.
The formal treaty ending World War I was signed in the Place of Versailles in France on June 28th 1919. See more.

The traditions of November 11th have changed over the years, from the two minutes of silence at 11 o'clock to remember the World War I Armistace to the remembrance of all veterans on this day.

Veterans' Day (formerly Armistice Day)

Remembrance Day

Please join me at 11 o'clock am, 11/11 your time zone, for a moment of silence to remember all of our veterans. And if you are a veteran, Thank You.

Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?

Another thought for the day:

False democracy shouts Every man down to the level of average. True democracy cries All men up to the height of their fullest capacity for service and achievement.

If you wish to glimpse inside a human soul and get to know a man, don't bother analyzing his ways of being silent, of talking, of weeping, of seeing how much he is moved by noble ideas; you will get better results if you just watch him laugh. If he laughs well, he's a good man.
-- Feodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky
