I really never thought this would work but thought what was the harm in trying. I don't have a self cleaning oven and had an horrible spill in the oven, it was thick and baked on. I hate using the commercial oven cleaners because they smell and when I have used them, I have to put on rubber gloves, something to cover my hair and a long sleeved shirt. I was also tired of having chicken ala oven cleaner. This is almost a miracle, the only problem it takes about a day to do. Take baking soda and cover the bottom of your oven, then spritz the baking soda with plain water. Whenever you think about it, spritz again and again. After about a day standing and being respritzed, take a sponge and wipe up the baking soda. You won't believe it. If you're still skeptical, try it on your oven door, that's what I did and now I am a strong believer in baking soda for bad stains. I didn't believe it when I heard about it but it is the best thing to clean your oven. The next best thing is if you don't get it all out of your oven, so what, you eat baking soda so what's the harm.

A friend sent me the rest, really interesting.

Did You Know That? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by
traditional "pain relievers."

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with
mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong
Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in
1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as
a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take
1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer . Just dissolve two
tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms.
Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost
instantly -- even though the product was never been advertised for this
use. (Note: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine is not the same..and
contains aspirin, which can cause stomach bleeding if you have ulcers.)

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey
and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin
sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail
fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful
antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from
loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to
the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those e! xpensive rust removers. Just
saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The
phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps,
hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the
insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground
instantly.

Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the
splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter
sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure....cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste
as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the
boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few
drops of Listerine ... a powerful antiseptic.

Heinz vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and
apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and
speeds up the healing process.

Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a
few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse
well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the
rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet,
instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in
your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat
daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites,
and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix
2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the
microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your
hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

Thanks! All of those sound very useful. I'll probably use quite a few. :)

The one thing about the bounce fabric softener used on animals shouldn't be done. I wouldn't take my chances on whether or not it's safe for a pet.

Wow Dee...........these are great. To add to the list, I've read that castor oil, rubbed on, relieves joint pain. I went in to purchase some the other day at Target pharmacy, and was told there is a national shortage.....have yet to try it.....42

   I am trying to imagine what a national shortage of castor oil says about us as a nation:rofl: ??? Could be folks are trying other things since the recalls of Vioxx and Celebrex. No, I'm sure it's because of the increase in the number of red states and therefore the number of people who are full of it:biggrin: .

Just please don't turn on the fan.
I'm not trying to put down your list, just something to think about.
I was wondering about the baking soda in the oven, would it work to get something like an old hand towel and dampen it and lay it across the oven bottom on top of the soda? I would think it might keep it damp longer.
Not trying to put a "damper" on anything but you're not suppose to put anything on a burn. Just gives it more bacteria. Maybe I'm wrong?
My diabetic APRN told me to use vicks on my toenails and I do think they are quite a bit better. Takes a really long time. I would think the Listerine would work better because it would go in those little apertures that vicks wouldn't.
Makes you wonder what coke does to your stomach, doesn't it?
Actually, I thought all alka seltzer had aspirin.
We were always told to use peroxide on infections to boil out the bacteria.

Granny, the towel is worth a shot. I will try it the next time I have to clean the oven. I think the point of spritzing reactivates the baking soda but as I said the damp towel is worth a shot.

My doctor told me not to put peroxide on an open wound because it kills good tissue.

Have you heard that a pinch of cinnamon will lower your cholesterol? I know 2 people who use it daily & no longer take meds to lower their cholesterol.

However, do not even think about using this to replace perscription albuterol inhalors. Peppermint 'burns' open nasal passages, but does diddly squat for bronchial constriction. (Though coffee can relieve MINOR wheezing, trust your perscriptions for serious allergy/asthma attacks.)

Another warning on Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold--it contains pseudephedrin (the main ingredient in Sudafed.) I found this out the hard way as I took it once without checking and ended up having heart palpitations for an hour as it worked its way through my system. For hyperthyroids (like me) those uppers can be dangerous.

For UTIs--my mother, me, and many other people I know swear by 28% or higher cranberry juice/juice blends. Clears it right up.

The rule, afaik, is don't put anything non-sterile on burns. As I've had painful cause to learn over a year in cooking school, one of the best treatments really is running the burn under cold water (not ice, just the tap on cold.) It takes the pain and swelling down right away.

I remember my great grandmother, half Indian, telling my mother not to let those kids have that cinnamon because it was bad for their heart. Have no idea about it otherwise.
Also, I put Vicks in my nose every night to open my nostrils. Works quite well.
