Some of us find any reference to the former Soviet Union about as offensive as most Jews would find references to the former Third Reich. The two were moral equivalents. (One girl on the bus I was riding was wearing patches of Lenin and Stalin--I felt like asking her if she enjoyed using mass murderers as fashion statements but bit my tongue.) With Johnny I just roll my eyes.

I don't see how it's any different than teenagers in the U.S. wearing camoflage or other military clothes without having served. He has an affinity for Russia, he's said it again and again. I agree with the poster that says it is nice to show respect for some of the other nations as well, and not have to "sneak around" with it like in the Cold War days. If he was wearing a Chinese team warmup jacket, would it be as offensive? How about Italian, since he's in Torino? He was wearing that jacket during practices at Skate Canada, five feet away from me....I thought nothing of it then, think nothing of it now.

I think that what he is wearing is inappropriate at the Olympics for official practice sessions. In the official portion of the Olympics, including practice sessions, he is specifically representing his country, and should be seen to be doing so. Outside of the official sessions at the Olympics, even while he is at the games, it would be OK, I think.
I am actually surprised that so many American posters on this board think that this is OK. To me his behaviour shows that he either does not realize what an honour it is to represent his country at the Olympics, or else he is simply not thinking at all (probably the latter). I am not American, so this is not a patriotism thing.
To me this has nothing to do with wearing something Russian as such. It would be just as inappropriate, IMO, to wear something Japanese or Canadian in the practice sessions.

I am assuming that you mean, in wearing this, he has hurt his marketability. Well considering it's a fad with young people, I am sure other young people either think it's cool or don't give two hoots. Since marketers happen to toady a great deal to the younger folk, Johnny may be an advertiser's dream.
Actually, that age group tends to love and go way out of their way to shock authority figures. They (parents) are the ones who have been stifling and oppressing youthful individuality since the youths escaped the dark bondage of the womb.Johnny might be on his way to becoming an idol to those young people who value nonconformity . On the other hand, considering all the purple and green haired, multipierced, tattoo covered young people I have met, Johnny might still be too tame for them.
I can't imagine an American audience thinking anything else. Why not? It's not like the boy is trying to raise Lenin from the dead. If the American audience knows kids of that age group, they probably won't bat an eye. It's becoming part of the scenery and will go out of style as quickly as it started.
In other words, he's not an idiot, he's a young person.

I have the same jacket =P They sell them at Target for 24 bucks lol. One can also buy the Italia ones for the same price =)
At any rate, i see nothing wrong with it. They're kind of en-vogue at the moment. Go to any high school or college. You will see young males wearing track jackets like that one...with the emblem of a country of some sort.

Oh get over it. Johnny is enamored of all things Russian..he probably thought the jacket was a cool find. I highly doubt that he wore it to cause controversy at the Olympics. One of his choreographers is Russian. He is friends with a lot of Russian skaters and emulates the Russian style. Everyone has their idols. Do you think he is going to walk out in the opening ceremonies wearing it? Some people just don't have enough to complain about.

Also very noteworthy is that the CCCP jacket is not the warm up outift of any country. I would also bet that at least one item of clothing that Pluscheno wears in trainnig is likely to be an American brand!
