Germans behind Shen/Zhao? Too bad.
Germans behind Shen/Zhao? Too bad.
Its on TV on CBC now (Canada).
Ah...wish I were in Canada! Well, at least I have my Eurosport audio....
Yup. Germans are behind Shen/Zhao....even in the tech score. hmmm....will have to see this. The audio mentioned tiny off-balances & off-axis throws but S/Z seemed to have had tiny errors, too. Maybe the sheer emotion of the music & program made the Chinese 'look' better, overall?
Well, they just played the Russian anthem for Dmitri Dorofeyev, who won 500K speed skating today. Announcer wonders: "Will they be re-playing the Russian anthem 45 minutes from now, for Pairs skating?"

Yes, the S/Z always have incredible emotion and their PCS always reflect how they skate together as one and how they reflect the music. I just was really hoping for the Germans to make the podium. They might still, but there's still four great teams to skate.
Last couples on the ice now.....wheeee!!!!
Two mins left...big fall from (I think) Pang-Tong. Big gasp in hall....
"Massive artistry improvement from Zhangs," says Simon. Standing room only. Competitors from many other sports here, watching. "All will be revealed in the next half-an-hour or so. Cheering sections for each nation....vocal Chinese but here come Pet/Tick..."

Petrova/Tikhonov - Fellini medley ("Probaby their last competiton...most likely not at Worlds.")
Good, difficult combo at start. LANDED - 2 ax-3 toe.
(Amarcord music) 3 salchows...she doubles...
throw 3 loop - GOOD. SUPER CONTROL!
throw 3 sal - good
(music - xylophone...) no comments...must be OK..
(music change again) huge applause but no commentary. End.
"Exhilirating finish. She just doubled on 3 sal. I wonder if it was enough. Some elements were crying out for a bit more interpretation. Pooped out a bit...Unbelievably HOT in this arena."
Chris: "I think the Chinese were better..." Let's see. They began 1.5 pts ahead of Shen/Zhao.
Tech score - not gt...so close....BEHIND Shen/Zhao. Boos from crowd (Russians only?).
1 Xue Shen, Hongbo Zhao (CHN) 62.32 124.59 186.91

Unfortunately that remains one of their biggest problems. Her landings on the throws are always scratchy. Not like the top Chinese or the Russians teams who are consistently clean.Originally Posted by geisha

I personally hope to hear Russian anthem tonight!!! So glad for Dorofeyv, being the flag bearer and all, he would've been scrutinized by Russian media if he failed to deliver.
Why wouldn't they stick around for Worlds, at least? I hope they do, they seem to be improving throughout the season.Originally Posted by Frau Muller
I'm surprised it was Petrova and not Tikhonov who doubled the 3 salchow.
Pang/Tong here - Phantom of the Opera
3 toes...big throw 3 twist!!!
ENORMOUS throw 3 sal! constant applause through all of this...but little comment....
"OHHHH....throw 3 loop...touch on way out."
end. HUGE APPLAUSE. Chris: "Boy - China has something to proud of tonight!" Simon - "Nowhere near quality of Shen/Zhao but still..."
Special chanting from Russian contingent as Tot/mar take to the ice...still waiting scores for Pang/Tong. Both Chris & Simon bet that Shen/Zhao will remain in first at this point. Tech score better than S/Z by fraction...but Comp score is lower....ahhhhhh...into second. Shen/Zhao lead by fraction!!! S/Z assured of bronze, at least!!!

what a disapointment for Maria and Alexei.. I was so hoping they would end up with a medal. I would even be happy if they beat Tanya and Maxim. I hope they go to the Worlds and at least win one more medal. But if they don't, Russia may be just lucky to have 2 spots for next year (since T&M have stated that Torino is their last competition)
T/M are really quitting after Torino? :(
Shen and Zhao getting a medal! Wheeeeeee!!!!!![]()
Totmianina/Marinin - Romeo & Juliet (Rota), Marton arrangement
Strong start...VERY strong 3 toes...
PERFECT so far...2 mins in...gt throw 3 loop...
(pace of music picks up...audience clapping in time...)
SPECTACULAR THROW right before slower music...in command!
Gorgeous spins in synch...
(pace quickens again...more audience clap-along...)
THAT WAS MIND-BOGGLING!!! SPECTACULAR!!! THEY HELD IT TOGETHER. INSTANT STANDING O FROM ENTIRE HALL!!!!!
Chris: "Barring a miracle - these are the new Olympic Champions!"
"Oleg Vasiliev thrilled...won this 22 yrs ago...they followed him, couldn't speak English...then it worked out for them." "Looking at slo-mo every element is perfect - gorgeous running edges coming off throws & jumps."
SCORES??? HUGE BRAVOS - 69.51 tech; ____Comp. BEST EVER for them. Chris: "Best pair skating performances -- SP + LP -- in history of Olympics!"
