ANNOUNCING THE 2006 SKATE FOR THE CURE!
Shelton, CT, March 8, 2006 –Two time Olympic figure skater and three time Italian National Champion Silvia Fontana and the 2006 Olympic Ice Dance team and three time US National Silver Medalists, Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, headline a list of regional, national and international figure skaters performing at the second annual Skate for the Cure to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), on April 1st at The Rinks at Shelton.
For the second year Daniel Innamorati, 17, a senior at Staples High School in Westport and a competitive figure skater himself, along with Ilana Phillips, 16, a junior at the same school will organize the fundraiser. Last year the event raised over $27,000. Innamorati and Phillips hope to surpass that amount this year with the addition of Olympiads Fontana, Gregory and Petukhov, and a fabulous line-up of figure skaters.
Fontana made international news recently as the 29-year-old athlete came out of her three-year retirement to represent her native country of Italy in the 2006 Olympics. (Fontana grew up in Rome and recently moved to America after she married figure skater John Zimmerman.) After 10 years of competitive skating, Fontana retired to the best results of her career in 2002: 7th at the Europeans, 10th at the Olympic Winter Games of Salt Lake City, and 10th at the World Championships. She had planned to devote herself to teaching and performing in exhibitions, but in March 2005, she decided to begin training again so she could compete for Italy in Turino, Italy. And though she did not win a medal, her drive and determination was applauded worldwide.
The Ice Dance team of Gregory and Petukhov are fresh back from their debut run in the 2006 Olympic games as well. Though this husband and wife team finished strong they are hoping to do even better in the next winter games. The couple met through email when they were both looking for partners in 2000. Petukhov flew to the US from Russia for a tryout and never returned. He became an American citizen in February 2005. They live and train in Connecticut.
Three-time Ukranian National Champion and five-time National Team Member of the Soviet Union, Victor Baryshevtsev will also be performing. The Tri-State Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team, who recently came in 4th at the USFS Synchronized Team Skating Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan with their Novice Team, will also be joining the lineup. Visit the Skate for a Cure website at www.skateforethecure.com for a complete listing of the regional, national, and international skaters that will be performing.
Last year’s 600 guests were entertained by 2006 Olympic figure skater and World Junior Figure Skating Championship Bronze Medallist Emily Hughes and European champion and Olympic bronze medallist Jozef Sabovcik.
The Rinks at Shelton features two NHL-size ice surfaces stacked one on top of the other, the only such configuration known to exist anywhere in the world. The arena is part of the 15-acre Sports Center of Connecticut that also offers an all-weather golf driving range, batting cages, mini-golf, a health club and facilities for corporate meetings and banquets.
Tickets and information are available at The Rinks, 784 River Road, Shelton, 203-929-6500 or www.sportscenterct.com or visit the Skate for the Cure ’06 online at www.skateforthecure.com.
JDRF, the leading charitable fund and advocate of type 1(juvenile) diabetes research worldwide, was founded by parents of children with juvenile diabetes, a disease that strikes children suddenly, making them insulin-dependent for life and carrying the constant threat of devastating complications.
I hope that some of you can make it! For those of you in the New England/North Atlantic regions, Shelton is about an hour and twenty minutes from New York City. The arena is right off the Merritt Parkway, and really easy to get to. Our "unseen" skaters this year include:

Leah Agler
Jenny Bloom
Christine Mozer
Alyssa Curran
Daniel Innamorati
Danielle Stewart
Brogan Kavanaugh
Jenny Erica

It will be a night of great skating and an exciting way to raise money and awareness for an excellent cause. Hope you can make it!
