Emily's legs are not split even that far when straight, so her upper body ought to be higher than Michelle's.
Plus, look at the position of her fingers. I love that detail!MKFSfan said:People who are new to eligible skating believe that Sasha is the inovator when it comes to extended spirals, pointed toes. IMO, Nicole Bobek deserves that credit and her extension, pretty position blows just about anyone's away:http://www.drrelax.com/BOBEK2.jpg
Michelle has a sense of freedom in her upper body that makes her spiral still without peer. Here's another Michelle one, just because I love this picture!

Here's Michelle in comparison, higher body/head than Emily and Sasha:

I think it should be taken into account that in these pictures Michelle is on an inside edge and Sasha's is on an outside edge. I have my "high leg" (LFO spiral), and it is much easier to get it up on an outside edge as opposed to an inside one.

MKFSfan said:I think it's the angle of the pictures, because when you look at Sasha from the side view, she looks like she rotates her hip as well. But I think she's narrower or something because there is a difference. Here's a couple of examples to compare side by side of OE spirals of both:

A ballet fan friend of mine was telling me how many people who do ballet would find our skaters' arabesque spirals "wrong", that they shouldn't rotate their hips. They see a good arabesque position to be when the hips are squared, like parallel to the ground, and the leg raised directly behind. The examples she showed me look to me like a traditional camel, just more extension.
But can you do that and maintain your edge? I think that's the other thing. It seems like the more you are on the flat, the easier it is to get the amplitude.MKFSfan said:A ballet fan friend of mine was telling me how many people who do ballet would find our skaters' arabesque spirals "wrong", that they shouldn't rotate their hips.
