It's an old Irina way to do the spiral, she has to get her upbody lower to get her free leg up. Though both with good edge.

Emily appears to be dropping her back to get the free leg up higher. Sasha used to do that, though nowhere near that bad, but not anymore as she has the flexibility and strength to do it with a parallel back to the ice. The thing is it could cause back problems. over time since it's putting unncessary strain on the lower back so it's something I think Emily should work on. But that is one heck of an edge

I agree with the above posts... her back drops a bit too low, when she does it, it almost looks like her upper body is tumbling down. I think she needs to arch her back and straighten her upraised leg more. She has nice edges in her spiral though, and overall it's quite nice.

I like when Emily straightens her back up when she does her beillmann spiral position. I think if she could hold her body there when doing the "normal spiral position, she'd be fantastic! She lowers her body to get more extension, height on her spiral add I find it distracting. Sashs is definitely one of the best where extension is concerned, but even she drops her back quite a bit.

Here's Sasha's from the front, and I think this is one of the better shots, good edge, body/head not as low as it sometimes is:

Sasha's legs are closer to a 180 degree split in this spiral, so we allow her to keep her head lower. Michelle's legs are split about 160 degrees, so her upper body can be higher. Emily's legs are not split even that far when straight, so her upper body ought to be higher than Michelle's.

Who does have a decent spiral these days? I can probably count them on one hand.

Thanks for that insight, MKFSfan and Alsace. Very interesting. I guess there is always a trade-off of one feature for another.

Emily hardly trounced Katy Taylor at Nationals. Emily just got overmarked on the PCS side (she doesn't get scores nearly that high from the ISU judges) to keep her ahead of Katy, who IMO outskated Emily in the FS at Nationals.

Katy went on to become 4CC Champion. Where are Emily's international medals this season?

Next year, I have no doubt that Katy will beat Emily at Nationals, and if Kwan returns, that would leave Emily off the World team.

While I admire Emily's ability to get her leg up high and deep edge, she needs to have her back up higher and arched and her free leg straighter.

I don't know the exact degree of Michelle's split, but it's not that far off from a split! I know Sasha gets more of a split, so does Alissa, so did Nicole, and others. There is no you gotta lower your body to get a perfect split. There's no absolute reason you HAVE to lower your body to get a perfect split. Actually, at the Dec. Cheesefest, Michelle looked to have more extension on her spirals than ever, so she is capable of a perfect split, I think she "sacrifices" some split for more lean in the body, which goes to edging, which leads to more speed.

    Here's a couple more pics:

Alissa gets her leg way up there, not the best picture, but she can get as much split as Sasha without dropping her body/head:

People who are new to eligible skating believe that Sasha is the inovator when it comes to extended spirals, pointed toes. IMO, Nicole Bobek deserves that credit and her extension, pretty position blows just about anyone's away:

Here's another Michelle one, just because I love this picture!

I agree. I have a similar body type, but not as much leg muscle. It would be hard for me to lose much weight, and it probably wouldn't do anything for my skating. As for her spiral, I agree with Alsace, if she'd arch her back, it'd look a whole lot better. Sasha's body goes just as low, but because she arches her back, it looks really good.

I think it should be taken into account that in these pictures Michelle is on an inside edge and Sasha's is on an outside edge. I have my "high leg" (LFO spiral), and it is much easier to get it up on an outside edge as opposed to an inside one.

Plus, look at the position of her fingers. I love that detail!

Michelle has a sense of freedom in her upper body that makes her spiral still without peer.

I think Michelle's IE is her stronger edge, while Sasha's OE is her stronger edge, which is why I choice to showcase these two pictures.

I have thought on several occasions that her free leg was going out to the side too much - kind of like AP McDonough used to do. Anyone else notice this?
