I think a "flatz" is when you rock back over to the "flat of the blade" off your outside edge before takeoff on a would-be Lutz.

It is not as bad as a "flutz," where you go all the way over on the inside edge, turning the jump into a flip.

It's just one type of a lutz, actually, a jump between flip and lutz. Skaters have different technic, and this is probably one of many ways to say how are they jumping lutz :)

They may have meant "flats" which would pertain to ones flat on the blade, or they did mean flutz which is a Lutz jump turned into Flip jump. You did not give much info. In what context was the term used?
