Being somewhat of a 'completist' (aka 'mad collector'....) in my areas of interest, I got myself this little paperback by Alina Adams, a 'figure skating mystery', as the cover proclaims.
TV figure skating researcher and general girl friday Bex Levy gets in way over her head when during the World Championships in San Francisco, the Italian judge is found murdered after the ladies' competition ends in a somewhat controversial fashion......
All the 'usual suspects' of figure skating are there, from the anorexic juvenile skaterettes, to the obsessive, pushy moms, the male skaters with an affinity for feather boas, the heavily accented but sometimes strangely fluent Russians, the bickering 'odd couple' announcers........
Not sure if Ms. Adams actually skates herself (kinda doubt it...), but she was indeed a TV figure skating researcher for many of the big hitters, I wonder if she's used herself as the prototype for Bex Levy......
There's one major flaw in the book, it concerns European paper size vs. US paper size, it wouldn't be such a big deal if Ms. Adams wouldn't make it such a central issue and keep coming back to it......
Because of this, and a little bit of a tendency by the author to fill pages with just random mental meanderings of the heroine, the book does not stand up to any kind of scrutiny or analysis, but if you're looking for an easy - breezy, uncomplicated and quick read that has something to do with figure skating, you've bought the right book.....
