Summery, technology is bad - Scott Peters (the creator of the show) is fearful of the ability of humans working in harmony with technology - wrapped in a strange twist of a "cop style / mystery" show.

Huh?

The 4400 initially seemed to be about 4400 people who disappeared over the course of several Years who were suddenly returned to Earth in a flash of light. None of the returnees have aged since the day they disappeared. The Dept of Homeland Security (or whatever they call it) has the job of tracking the returnees. As they re-enter the world, they have discovered that they have been changed and have powers.

Maya was kidnapped in the 1940's as a 7 yr old. Her parents are deceased and she is adopted by one of the agents. Maya now has precognitive powers. She makes eeary statements that later become true.

Lily was kidnapped 12 yrs before the show started. When she returns, her husband has remarried and her daughter believes that her stepmother is her mother. The husband was a cad because he didn't even go to Lily himself. She has nowhere to go. Then, she discovers that she is pregnant.

Richard and Lily meet in the detainee center. He's a black soldier who was kidnapped during the Korean War. Just before his disappearance, he had been beaten by some white soldiers because of his love affair with a white woman, who turns out to be Lily's grandmother.

He and Lily help each other and fall in love. Somehow, they find out that Richard is the father of Lily's unborn child.

Jordan Collier was a wealthy man before he disappeared. He decides to build the 4400 center to help the returnees and to teach others the 4400 ways. What's odd is his obsession with Lily's unborn child. He invites them to stay at the center and gives Richard a job in security. Then, they discover how he is monitoring every facet of Lily's pregnancy. When he touches Lily's stomach, he gets 'shocked' - seems the baby has mysterious powers, too.

Sean is the nephew of one of the main agents. He was taken while camping and his cousin Kyle has been in a coma since. He feels detached. One day a bird flies into the window and dies. When he picks it up, the bird returns to life. When he gets in a fight with someone at school, his touch literally draws the life out of his opponent. He's scared and ends up being Jordan's protege.

Sean does touch his cousin and it wakes him from his coma. Kyle is also differnts - no memory. By the end of season 1, it is revealed that Kyle was supposed to give a message to his father Tom, who is the homland security agent. Tom's role is to help the 4400 save the world.

Season 2 had more about the fear or reverence the public held the 4400. More machinations and life changes, etc. At the end of season 2, Jordan was apparently dead, Sean was head of the 4400 center and Lily & Richard's daughter Lily had sprouted in the very last episode from infant to nubile 21 yr old who proclaims she was meant for Sean. (During the course of the season, we had observed that baby Lily had powers that were apparently controlled by her emotional reactions.)

There are other minor characters that are featured in their own stories, which essentially point to how people have different powers and where it seems as though they were given these powers to help mankind. However, the general public becomes frightened, etc.

During season 1, one returnee finds that his neighborhood park has been overtaken by drug dealers. He decides he's gonna fix it and start cleaning up the park at night. Someone tries to mug him and he discovers that he has fighting powers. He sorta becomes a vigilante, but is overcome and killed. His death inspires the rest of the neighborhood to save the park in his memory.

During season 2, there is an episode where a teacher has the ability to bring out the inate artistic abilities in her students. She looks in their eyes and then gives them the materials they need to develop their abilities - musical instruments, paint, writing, etc. There is one troubled student in her class who accuses her of molesting him. Turns out the kid is mad at her since she hasn't been able to help him. In the end, it is revealed that the student's father has been telling him that he is stupid, etc. The thought behind her powers is that no civilization surivives without art and her power was given to her to bring art back to our civilization.

There's obviously too much to recap.

The 4400: Unlocking the Secrets episode is on NBC right now (9PM to 10PM) Saturday night. It seems to be a recap of the key story elements - in case you don't have time to watch the marathon of key episodes on USA tommorrow.

This summary show is on again at 10PM Sunday on USA.

Times mentioned are eastern standard.
