I'm 36 (recently lol), and from (and thankfully back in) Atlanta. I'm a stay-at-home mom who designs jewelry (GrGranny I believe we've talked briefly about jewelry before ) and writes. I love to spend time with my 7 year old daughter, playing drums, cooking, and do my best to approach life with an, albeit wicked at times, sense of humor.

My motto: When you lose your sense of humor, you start to miss out on many of the joys of life.

Just moved from the central coast of CA, San Luis Opispo to the San Diego area and am loving it!

You've heard this before. We live in Sothern California. I Daniel am male and Lulu is a woman cat of three years. Beside following figure skating for the last 40 some years, in my spare time I am a napper and tv chanel flipper. I don't care much for the drama's but rather prefere the stupid stuff and educational tv. Little Lulu loves bird watching and playing with anything she can get her little paws on.

Hey Cyn, I live in Atlanta too! Morrow, to be exact. Was in the hospitality industry for years, went back to school and just recently graduated. Male, soon to be 44 in July(13th), native Gerogian, Love to read, travel, watch skating(duh) have a very skewed sense of humor. My greatest joy is teaching others and singing, well besides being a skating wisenhiemer.

Live right outside of Charleston, West VIrginia where it has been raining forever. RN graduate of WVU... go Mountaineers (who btw as part of the Big East are being ******* by Miami, Boston College, and Syracuse), gemini, no husband or kids. Have two Girl Scout troops and am an event planner for our council, also work with the local woman's club and beautification leaque. Love gardening especially English roses. Am STILL looking for a papillion puppy...black and white female (the puppy) that is not from a puppy mill. Anyone who has any leads please PM me. Also love to read especially Diana Gabaldon. Anxiously awaiting the arrival of new niece Ashlyn Bree who is due on July 5.

Kicker! I live in a small town 15 miles south of Wichita. I have a question for you. If you were suma cum laude, how come you can't spell? I am serious, not making fun. Kinder-
garten has no d. I never even went to college but I can spell. I know my grammar isn't that good. I noticed in your post about the Porsche that your spelling and grammar were both really bad. I hope you know that I am just curious about this. I can't understand how come, if you are so smart, that you didn't learn grammar and spelling. This is in a kindly grandmotherly way, not to put you down. I am just really wanting to understand this. I'm not doubting your IQ.

Hi Granny, My name is Dee (female) and I was born and raised in Omaha Nebraska. My brother used to live on the East Coast and when I visited him he would take me to New York City, Boston, Cape Cod, Newport and other interesting places but I was always happy to get back to Omaha. I know--kind of crazy on my part.

I work for a not-for-profit organization and have loved almost every minute for the last 13 years. I am an Executive Assistant to three directors. They are very good to me because they know I can make life miserable for them.:lol: :lol:

For hobbies, I love creating things. I was in craft shows up until a couple of years ago. I love to sew (when I get the time) and I used to make some jewelry. I also do bead work.

I also love to watch skating. I have watched the 2002 Olympics several times, as well as, several of the other competitions. I always see something different each time.

I used to volunteer alot but had to give that up when I started back to school. I graduated with an associate degree a year ago. I think going back to school at my age was difficult in the sense of working a full time job and school at night. I think at my age I did appreciate all the hard work that goes into working towards a degree.

Dee, If you hadn't noticed, I was raised in Nebraska. Burwell. Nebraska's big rodeo. Pronounced rodeeeeo, not rodao. :lol:
I worked in Lincoln until I was married and we moved to Seattle. My husband graduated from UN. He was from Avoca. Had relatives in Weeping Water. I had relatives in Plattsmouth. His sister lives on a farm near Oakland. So I'm pretty familiar with Nebraska.

Hey Kicker,
Congrats on your achievement. As I wrote in my post I just graduated from college with honors and I don't spell so well either. I guess people don't understand that much of writing is done on computers now and that it catches a lot of spelling errors. I don't know about you, but I've had to do so much writing that I am perhaps a bit more careless about using spell check when posting here than if I were using a word processor. Also, there are so many more requirements, technology-wise that were not required of previous generations. Some of the more basic elements get left behind as teachers try to balance adding more subject areas in the same amount of time.

Granny, to answer you question about how “If you were Suma cum laude, how come you can't spell?” there are a variety of reasons. I have been told by many reading specialist that highly intelligent people have problems spelling because the spelling rules are so capricious and don’t make sense. Ours is a hybrid language and the rules of spelling do not follow any rhyme or reason. One teacher pointed out to me that according to our reasoning “fish” could actually be spelled P-H-Y-C-H-E, which spells something else entirely. Spelling is also not a subject that is easily taught. Other than spelling books, it is basically learning words by rote and having good “pattern recognitions skills. Finally, one of the reasons I have learned to spell better is that I deplore getting corrected in public. I was always taught that this was rude and hurtful, and I know that feeling all too well by having my spelling ridiculed by other on boards and in chat. We all have different talents and I think being a good and considerate person is far more important than spelling correctly, though I would encourage people that don’t spell well to either use word check and have a dictionary to back it up (This is a definitely a case of “Physician, heal thyself)

By the way, you have obviously learned a few things in your lifetime, so I leave you with a great line that one of my favorite teachers told me...” Having a degree and having and education are two separate things. The first can contribute to the second, but one’s “education” embodies all then knowledge that you utilize. Some of the most “educated” people in the world didn’t have a college education. Albert Einstein was asked to leave college repeatedly because he was thought “not bright enough” to be at University. He did pretty well, and by the way, his spelling was notoriously bad

Did you read the post that Granny was referring to? The one with the Porsche? Or the other one below that is locked? I think dear Granny was just trying to be as diplomatic as she could, and really doesn't need to be chastised for it.


Or maybe you did read it and saw nothing wrong beyond some perfectly understandable spelling mistakes? If that's the case, ok, we'll have a better understanding of your above post.

Norlite, I was simply attempting to explain how someone could be intelligent and not be a good speller. If you read the post carefully, you may see that I am actually implying that GGranny is very smart. She had stated that she didn't graduate from college, but did learn to spell. This is one of her many talents, and from her posts it is obvious that life has given her a tremedous "education."

Perhaps I am a little sensitive myself, having been "called out" for my spelling ( far more in chat than here.) That's why I mentioned what I said about making the attempt to spell as best you can with what tools you have. I know often times I go back and read my own posts only to find that they are riddled with misspellings and errors.

If one did not know better, one might have assumed that Granny was criticizing, no matter how genteelly. However I know that granny is a great person and is probably expressing general concern over how someone comes across. I just wanted Kicker to know that she is not alone when it comes to being able to do lots of things well besides spell.

I was trying really hard not to chastise. I really didn't want to "get on to her/him".
I do have to disagree a teeny bit with the teacher. I was taught phonics and not rote and that is where the difference lies. I have discovered over the years that people that are taught to learn to read by learning every word don't do nearly as well as those of us learn by phonics. I can understand having so much to teach that they have to cut down on reading and writing but it is still as important. One example would be if I were hiring someone to work for me, I would pick the one with the better grammar than the one without and I am sure that would go with about anyone hiring. I also know that some people purposely use bad grammar even though they are smart. My husband was one of those. He could really embarass me. He was extremely smart. He could remember every number of a Boeing airplane part but couldn't remember a grocery list.:rollin: I do know that you don't have to be smart to spell correctly. Or I wouldn't be able to spell. :lol: "highly intelligent people can't spell". So I guess I am dumb. Anyway, I did formerly call people on their spelling as a joke but found out I was hurting people's feelings so I quit. I just really wanted to understand the reason. When I first saw that post, I thought he/she was a foreigner.
So, if your feelings were hurt, Kicker, (I only give nicknames to people I want to like) I am really sorry. Won't you please forgive me? I am just the kind of person that wants to know what everyone is about and why they say or do the things they do. We had a poster here a few months ago that was extremely funny and smart but so hateful I could hardly stand it. Of course, on this board, you better spell DEFINITELY correctly. :rollin:

Granny, you are such a stitch. My post should have said " SOME highly intelligent people don't spell well" it's true, if you are very analytically driven the language just doesn't make sense.
You, however are a different story, Like I said before, just because you don't have a degree, it doesn't mean you don't have an education. I know it's good not to take yourself to seriously, but you are plenty smart. I've read your post and you always make valid points and express yourself very well.

My point is that for a variety of reasons we all come up short in areas of our lives for a variety of reasons. I wasn't diagnosed with a learning disablity until my late 30's. I was constantly at the end of the line spoken as " You seem to be SO smart, why can't you__________?" I just want others out there to know that we all have our gifts and talents. One of yours is to be the one and only "Ggranny", now I need to be quiet or Rgirl is going to write even LONGER post to let us know who is the "word queen":lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Matey, It's funny how things go. I generally have a really hard time expressing what I want to say. For some reason, figuring out words & spelling is easy for me. I had a really hard time in school. I think mostly because I was always told at home how dumb I am so what was the point of studying. I always got 100 in spelling. I never could learn to memorize. I still can't. Now, I can't even remember!:rollin:
I guess you could guess my favorite tv game is Wheel of Fortune and my favorite pastime is cryptoquips and second is crossword puzzles. I have more trouble with crossword because I can't remember the definitions. :lol: Of course, above all that is watching figure skating. Were you on the board when I told how I can remember Sonja Heine?
If anyone doesn't like the nicknames I use for them, let me know.

I have always had a love for words (but not as much as Rgirl :lol: ) and the English language, and I have a deep appreciation for correct spelling. I used to call people out, not only on spelling, but on their use of conversational grammar, but stopped doing so and did great about biting my tongue until one day when LittleCyn came home from school, and when asked if she had homework, she replied, "I ain't got no homework." The conniption I had was worthy of America's Funniest Home Videos.

When LittleCyn learned to read and write (she's 7 now), I was surprised at the different methods used to teach children. They encourage phonetic spellings and do the 'fine tuning' later, something quite different from how I was taught. Is this the norm for teaching children these days? I sometimes worry as I see so many mistakes of words that are relatively easy to spell, and if you saw my thread from a while back about this Instant Message Speak taking over, I'm a little frightened for the future. Isn't the American educational system in enough trouble already?

Gotta hand it to you, Grgranny, you are a class act. I could definitely learn some lessons in diplomacy and tact from you.
