(8/7/06) - 2006 World champion Kimmie Meissner capped off her breakthrough season by winning SKATING magazine's Readers' Choice Award for 2006 Skater of the Year Michelle Kwan Trophy). Voters logged on to www.usfigureskating.org to submit their votes for the most deserving skater(s) in the United States based on the accomplishments of the past season.

Meissner's performance at the World Figure Skating Championships in Calgary, Canada, in March included a near-perfect free skate packed with seven clean triples including two triple-triple combinations. It was the first World title for the United States in any discipline since Michelle Kwan won gold in 2003.

Well, Tanith and Belbin sure made a case for themselves. Johnny was 2nd in the voting, not sure I'd vote for him over Evan or Sasha.

Since this is a "voters' choice" award, Kimmie must be pleased that her popularity with the viewers/readers is keeping pace with her accomplishments on the ice.

It looks like the synchro network swung into action, too. In 2004 they got out the vote for the Hydenettes, who tied with Sasha. This year the Chicago Jazz junior team came in third in voter popluarity ahead of Cohen, Lysacek, Inoue and Baldwin, Belbin and Agosto and a whole mob of likeable and talented folks who also had great seasons.
