In America, l'm thinking Miki could put up a fight... at least I hope so!

In Canada, well, I'll let Seanibu comment on this one. :p

In China, I'd LOVE to see it be a battle between Elene & Bebe, but what about Yukari?

France - Miki again

Russia - I am wondering if Aki Sawada is going to live up to what a certain site says about her. This will be her 2nd GP senior competition...

Japan - I'm hoping it will be a Mao-Elene battle. In fact, I'm hoping Elene will be right in there with Mao and Yu Na for about four years.

But my crystal ball has very weak powers!

ETA: These are meant as additions to what Joe said - not stand-alone. I.e. I am not calling a Miki victory in Skate Am & France, just predicting she'll be in the fight.

Jaana, or others, what do you think of Sawada, and what have you seen?

I saw a vid on YouTube where she did 4 double axels. It was an exhibition where she was doing a vaguely geisha-like number with some absurd dangly red props (not in the jumps, luckily). After the jumps she picked them up again and ended by hiding behind them - but she was so happy about the jumps that you could see her grinning behind her red circles. Cute. She's an athletic looking type, not my favorite type, but she's likeable - and strong!

Just don't see Elena being competitive. I think her best eligible performances are behind her.

It's kind of like fresh air without a few usual suspects.

However, who is Sawada? and why don't I know about her?

Well, Joe, I would never want to diss a young skater, but anything you don't know is not worth knowing, so Miss Sawada may be in a bind.

OTOH, this web site (which I think I learned about here) thinks she is the next big thing for Japan.

Russia - I am wondering if Aki Sawada is going to live up to what a certain site says about her. This will be her 2nd GP senior competition...
Since you're referring to a Japanese skaters' FAN site, I'm not surprised there is some normal "hyping" going on there. ;)

Sawada has had a solid, but not spectacular, junior international career (by recent Japanese female singles standards anyway), and so I wouldn't necessarily assume that she will make a big splash in her Senior Grand Prix debut season. She is scheduled to skate senior in the big Thornhill competition in Canada this weekend -- I'll be interested to see how she fares there.

Spun Silver - that site did not say much about her except she will be in the GP.

I did, however, notice that Mao is being coached by Kwan's coach, Arutunian. Interesting because one doesn't think she needs a jump specialist.

To piggyback on Sylvia's post, last year Sawada did very well in the junior grand prix. In her first event, Skate Slovakia, she finished second to Yu-na Kim, beating Gedevanishvili, Taylor and Korpi.

At Skate Japan she won the gold (against a weaker field), and in the junior GP final she again finished second behind Kim but ahead of Xu, Taylor and Gedevanishvili.

At Japanese senior nationals she took seventh -- which wasn't all that bad, considering that the top six were Suguri, Mao Asada, Arakawa, Onda, Nakano and Ando (!)

Jaana, or others, what do you think of Sawada, and what have you seen?

I saw her short programme and freeskate performance at 2004 Junior Grand Prix final in Helsinki. She did not place well, but I remember having liked her skating along with that of Mao Asada and Yu-Na Kim very much.

I did, however, notice that Mao is being coached by Kwan's coach, Arutunian. Interesting because one doesn't think she needs a jump specialist.

I think that a jumping specialist is a very good choice for a growing girl whose body is changing.

Don't forget about Katy Taylor. She could be a spoiler at SA. If she keeps the momentum going.

Anyone can and I am sure in one of these GPs there will be one spoiler. However, if I were a bookie, I would name these skaters as favored to win:

SA - Mao
SC - Yu Na
COC - Sokolova
TEB - Kimmie
COR - Sawada
JPN - Mao

The Final - a spoiler.;)

I am going to say 4 each in no particular orde of "excitement" other than "Bunniie"

USA - Miki, Mai n Mao, Meier and Meissner (battel of the "Ms")

Can - Fumie:love: , Alissa, Yoshi and Kim

Chi - Gedevanishvili, Sokolova, Nakano and Huges

Fra - Kostner, Kim, Meissner and Ando

Rus - Onda, Sokolova, Meier and Czisny

Jpn - The most exciting "heat." too hard to pick just 4.
Fumie:love: , Gedevanishvili, Sokolova, Kostner - but am also existed to see Mao, Kim, Bebe, Nanako and I am not shocked at all that Miki wasn't "picked" for Nipon.

I am interested in what Joanne will do as well as BeBe and there are 3 names across the board who I have never seen anything of, so that is exciting as well. Really curious more than pure excitement what will happen with Miki and Kostner.
