Masters competition, which took place last week-end, is the opening of the season for french skaters (senior and junior). The french all skated their new programs.

Here is the list of the contenders:
http://www.ffsg.org/France Elite 2005/participants.php

Here are the results with complete details: http://www.ffsg.org/France Elite 2005/index.htm

There wasn't any tv broadcast so we have only some individual reports in french forums and some french newscasts (about Brian at 99%).

It has displayed an accurate picture of the state of french skating:

- The ladies category isn't still in recovery process and the only lady able to make a lutz was off out of injury (Candice Didier - 20 - http://didier.candice.free.fr/wordpress/lazyest-index.php?file=Galas/galacandice2.jpg http://didier.candice.free.fr/wordpress/lazyest-index.php?file=Competitions/2005/PICT0220.jpg http://didier.candice.free.fr/wordpress/lazyest-index.php?file=Competitions/2004/04203.jpg , she could be quite good if she didn't have such a fragile mental and if the french fed hadn't put so much pressure on her and so early (when she was 13-16); she was supposed to be Syria's heiress -she certainly has the talent; since she has been in the senior competition, she has always collapsed in international events. Her new coach decided to make her have a year off competition and mental reinforcement program, but the french fed forced her to make the qualifying for the Olympics. Her coach said it was a big mistake but she was sent ... and collapsed. So we are hoping for some improvement this year... if it is still possible... )

- The pairs are begining slowly but other young pairs than Pla/Bonheur (22/24) are begining to exist as contenders.

- The dancers seems to work on inovative and ambitious programs and seduced the judges (despite the fall of Olivier Schoenfelder due to stupid inattention). Péchalat/Bourzat and Carron/Jost's programs have received quite a warm reception, the first ones for their "4 seasons restyled" FD (with what some called an ala Denkova/Stavisky choreography) and the second ones got a standing ovation for their tango OD. Delobel/Schoenfelder LP created a sensation too (a story about some modern Bonnie & Clyde, on the Untouchables' revisited sountrack)

- The guys are very interesting: Joubert did 2 different quads (tl and sal but no combo) in his LP and his new choreo seems to get some apreciation (but the costume gets mixed ones  ), Préaubert despite his ankle injury managed to get in 2nd place with a crowd ovation for his LP (despite 2 falls, so the program must have some interest in itself) and Ponsero (20) tried a quad in his LP (but he lacks of artistry; he really needs to get in the international stage to make progress on his style)

Men and dance are once more competitive, while pairs are making some progress and girls... ok, I won't speak about the girls.

There are photos of the athletes here: http://perso.orange.fr/glace-gones-patinage/masters_2006_2007_photos.htm
I especially like Pechalat/Bourzat's costumes. Funny ones http://perso.orange.fr/glace-gones-patinage/DSCF2146.jpg  .

Isabelle looks like a kind of Catwoman but that's not their definitive costume.

There are other reportages' videos on Youtube. Especially one in which Annick Dumont talks about summer training sessions with Préaubert and Joubert. She said that Joubert is able to do 3 or even 4 different quads. She saw him making a quad flip; it was the first time in her life she had seen one. About quad salchow, Joubert's success rate is about 60%.

This competition is not a big mediatic event. It looks like it has a very nice, nearly familial ambiance. The gala is nice too since there are always some funny exhibitions (I remember Candeloro dancing with a skeleton, or skating as a pair with Stéphane Bernadis dressed like a ballerina  . Last year, we had Alban doing Brice de Nice and Dambier playing a transformist on Obispo's song. Ok, those were french private jokes so it looked weird at Europe's galas but it was fun though). Such a shame this competition isn't broadcasted on TV.:frown:

Thanks so much for your infomration on this event. Just wanted to add in that when Joubert first hit the European scene, the British commentators on Eurosoprt commented that Joubert had landed four different quads in practice sessions, i believe they were the toe, sal, flip and lutz.

But good for him if its the first competition quad sal that he's ever landed - has he ever attempted it before in competition?

Not that I can recall.

I always thought that Joubert would go for the quad flip at some point, as his triple flip gets very nice height and seems to be one of his more consistent jumps.

I agree - sometimes on the solo triple flip in the SP he's looked like its almost been too big for him!

As long as I know, it was his first attempt in competition. During the Masters, Brian added that he wanted to land a third quad at TEB (maybe not 3 different ones though).

He likes challenges and to challenge his opponents. :agree:

By the way, some people recorded Joubert's LP. It is available on fsvids.

anymore info on DEL/SCH ?

I 'll tell you what a guy in the french forum I go to (he was at Clermont) said about their FD:

It is about a hold-up:
- in the first (fast) part, (the Untouchables reorchestrated by Maxim Rodriguez), it's the hold up (there must be a step sequence in that part); at the end of it, Isabelle gets shot.
- Then goes the slow part (with Bonnie & Clyde Music, I don't know which one: movie, Gainsbourg ?)
- then the fast part which has some fast backward part (they do the same sequence step in reverse).

This guy said that, despite the fall, the program is gorgeous and really athletic and technic. I heard Isabelle underlining the athletic efforts performed in this program.

Isabelle (she is from Clermont so she was the one interviewed) said that they were not completly handling the program right now but it should be ready for the TEB (with the costumes). They seem to have fun performing it. The spectators too.

As the Masters weren't broadcasted, we have very few informations (99% about Brian, 1% about Olivier and Isabelle, nothing on others :eek:hwell: ). I guess we'll have more at TEB.

If you go to youtube and search for "joubert" and "masters" you get a selection of clips - in the "(Fluff 2)" clip you see the opening quad toe and quad sal from his LP - the quad sal had a better ladnign and flow out than the quad toe - it look svery impressive. I hope he manages it many more times throughout the season.

In France, it is very bad since the medias don't care one bit about figure skating (we get the worse commentator ever). Brian has a personality the medias like, he has a big mouth (Olivier and Isabelle are quite the opposite) and big personality; he is very athletic which helps sport reporters (mainly men) to consider that what he's doing is a sport and not some little girly game tricked by biased and corrupted judges. Brian is now more cautious with the medias but he is still the one that attracts the cameras.
The french public has a strong love for ice dancing (best olympic ratings) but the medias really don't care.

You're welcome.

I really don't know. All we saw is now on Youtube or fsvids.
At TEB, there will be a lot more to see (I'll make sure about that  )

Thanks for the links - i enjoyed Joubert's free program - i agree that he's definitely broken out with a more unique style with that LP, i look forward to seeing how he settles into the program as the season progresses.
