The protocols are up now.:)

I've been looking at the Ladies SP scores. Some of these GOE's make no sense to me. How did Ando and Hughes end up with the highest spiral sequence scores? Are their ice coverage, speed, and edges so good that they offset the super-fugly positions?

 I didn't think that Mao's 3f-3r was a whole 1+ better than Miki's 3z-3r either.

Thanks!

No, they just twisted themselves into more super-fugly positions than everyone else. CoP is all about quantity over quality. Sprial sequences have gone to being one of the most beautiful elemnents to one of the ugliest.

What exactly are you talking about? Mao didn't do any triple/triple combos in her LP

Let me quote myself:

Ptichka, were you there for the SP? I wonder what you thought about their respective triple-triples. Mao got a whole point more on the GOE than Miki did. Did they look different live than they did on tv?

I haven't seen it yet, but looking at the protocols, I wonder if the judges are looking out more for flutzes this year. I noticed that for a number of skaters the GOEs on their Lutz were all over the place. Ando's opening 3Lz/3Lo got a -2 and a -1 to balance three +1's. It made me wonder if some judges saw a questionable entry edge and others didn't.

Mao's opening triple Lutz scored three -1's, together with a +2 and a bunch of +1s (no 0s).

In the LP not only was Ando's spiral a level 4, she also received a whopping +1.00 GOE. Very strange, since this element is without question the weakest part of her repertoire.

Sorry, it was late and I was sure you were talking about LP.

All the ladies had level 4 spiral sequences in the short program except Asada, Asada, Korpi, and Taylor.

Four features are needed for level 4 as of this year, and most of the skaters include the variety of edges including back inside and the change of edge features, so really only two difficult positions are needed for level 4. Some skaters include more, but it doesn't help their scores and may hurt if they're ugly or not held long enough or negatively affect the steadiness of the edges. Additional contorted positions, fugly or otherwise, aren't going to get them higher levels from the tech specialists and should have no effect on the judges' GOEs.

Meissner, Meier, Leung, Marchei, and Cantu all started with the same base mark as Ando and Hughes, so if they got lower scores it was because of the GOEs. Which of them did you think had better quality ice coverage, speed, and edges, or more attractive positions, but suffered in GOE for not twisted themselves into fewer difficult positions?

BTW, in my opinion the very best spiral sequences of 5-10 years ago were more attractive than the average spiral sequences we see today with the new system, but I find the 10th or 20th best sequence now better than 10th or 20th best then. Whether best then was better than best now is hard to say. Nicole Bobek would have rocked the spiral sequence under either system.

The difference is that under the old system, a lot of the spiral sequences were pretty forgettable, so you just remember the best ones. And now the individual sequences may not stand out because so many of the same once-rare positions are being used by many skaters, but we often notice just to think "there's that position again -- don't like it on her -- this skater doesn't do it nearly as well as the best."

I think that Emily and Miki both have the same fault with their spiral: bent too far forward from the waist, too close to the ice, not enough curve in the back. Yet they both got very high scores! Emily's hand is almost touching the ice at points in her forward spiral.

What is very noticeable is the lowish PCS scores. Even for her close-to-record-breaking SP, Mao Asada got just one 7.5: In SS. And Kimmie Meissner got the highest FS PCS scores.

About Miki Ando's spiral, now that I have seen the SP on televsion, it wasn't nearly as bad as I remember from previous years. Her edges were steady and her extension was no worse than anyone else's.

Regarding the program component scores for this group of skaters, I don't find them particularly low. This isn't Kwan, Slutskaya, Arakawa and Cohen. The high 6's seems about right to me.
