Interesting. When I saw the scores after the first flight I thought Joannie was in a lot of trouble (she had a 1 point deduction, must have fallen?). With all the other contenders still to skate. But it seems her program stood up pretty well.

Kimmie also with a 1 point deduction. I expected Yu Na Kim to have a good short. This is where she shone at Skate Canada, having problems in the long. That will really be the test for her. If she can skate it clean, it's a lovely program.

Interesting also that a no-deduction skate from Yu Na seems to have beaten a no-deduction skate from Miki. Lets see what she can do in the long.

The two leaders are very close in score, but even the seven points between them and third is, as we all know, not insurmountable. Wouldn't be surprised to see Kimmie come back blazing in the long either.

What a competitive field.

Joannie finished way after her music, so I'm guessing her deduction was for time. She did not fall.

Kimmie fell on her lutz and, therefore, had no combination. However, I think her PCS should have been the highest. Had she landed the combo, she should have been in first. She is neater, cleaner, more finished and polished.

Ando skated as well - if not better - as she did at SA. Strong, powerful, big jumps. She's wild in this program, but that suits the music, so...

Kim was clean as a whistle. Great skate...Just like in Canada.

The surprise was Calvez, who hit a 3t-3t and a nice 3loop. I actually would have had her in 3rd ahead of Rochette, who just didn't compare to Ando and Kim.

Zukowski also hit a BIG 3t-3t, but she doubled her 3lutz. she has a lot more potential than I remember last year. She has grown taller, which gives her a much nicer line than she had last season.

That makes 4 triple-triples in the top 6, and the only reason it wasn't 5 was because Meissner fell...I think that's pretty noteworthy.

Yes, we haven't seen that many triple triples at a world championship in a long time, let alone in a Grand Prix event. Looks like you've got to have some big combos to compete.

Kimmie has her work cut out. She'll need at least a bronze to make the Finals.

Miki is not far behind Ya Nu.

And Rochette must make the bronze to ensure her GPF.

Kimmie is in the same position as she was in Skate America -- so far behind that it seems like the best she could get is bronze. But at Skate America Kimmie skated a great LP while Mao Asada faltered, allowing Kimmie to move up to second.

I think Miki is in the driver's seat, if she can deliver the same technical content as she did the last time out.

Joannie would still probably make the finals even if she slips to fourth. This would give her 24 points and the tie-breaker advantage over anyone getting a second and a third (Kimmie, for instance).

Bill, did you mean Miki in Skate America? because I didn't see her TEB skate on youtube.

The only lady whose TEB performance is on youtube, as far as I've seen, is Kimmie. I was very impressed. As someone remarked on another board, the new costume (which she had to get in Paris very fast because she lost her luggage) was VERY becoming and helped her achieve a more sophisticated, elegant look. While she doesn't exactly shock you with her stylistic beauty yet, she has definitely improved her presentation. Good for her! Too bad about the fall.

The costume is a huge improvement! She finally looks like she belongs in the senior ranks.

Miki or Yu Na - fire or ice?

Oh, today's Miki's skate is up, and to me it's even better than in SA - there seems to be a tad more confidence and emotion. It's just so strong, fiery and gorgeous. I love this skate! And my goodness, does she look gorgeous with that hairdo and that weird but lovely dress.

Yu Na's is remarkable too. She is a cooler skater - in spite of the bow in the direction of tango style. But what ease and silkiness. I just keep wishing she would show emotion - her face is stolid (a while back I posted side-by-side pix of her and Buster Keaton, the silent-film star known as the "great stone face"). It may be a cultural difference. I was watching some Korean men sing church music the other night, and they were physically and facially very restrained - all the emotion was in the music itself. Except for one, who was bursting with emotion.
