Figure Roller Skating

Has anyone here ever roller skated or watched roller skating championships? I have tried roller skating and have watched some skating on tv. It's not as big in Canada as it is in the US. One does not see the coverage that figure skating alone gets. Still it's kind of neat to watch the same jumps and spins being performed on a different kind of surface. I wonder if there are any Michelle Kwans in the world of figure roller skating?

I've done some roller figure skating but many years ago. Is there a website for this sport? It could give some information on contests, etc.

I think Tara was a champion roller skater as a child, before she switched to ice skating. Some critics have said that this early training adversely affected her jump technique. Evidently you have to take off on different "edges" because of the weight of the skate, or something like that.

OTOH, Tara's jump technique couldn't have been hurt too badly -- she won the OGM in her new sport.

The big difference between the two figure skating sports is that on rollers you skate on a surface; on ice you skate in a surface. This difference is what makes edging so difficult in the transition and this is why Tara was not able to a spiral on an arc. She had to spiral on the flat diagonally. Also her footwork was limited because of edging which was still a problem during her switch to SOI.

She has come a long way by now and if she continues she should be able show good basics.

There are several web sites about figure roller skating. It's kind of interesting to see the different skaters. Tara has improved in her footwork immensely thanks to Kurt! He gave her some lessons for one of her pro skates. I thought she did an excellent job.

The one discipline in figure roller skating, I have never been able to quite grasp how it is accomplished is figures. I know they do the same figures as in ice skating, but how on earth do they lay a figure down? I would love to watch sometime.

Ladd - The circle eights and serpentines are painted on the floor. When a skater does a figure in competition, the judges watch how they trace over the painted figure.
