What has happened to the Beiers in Ice Dance?

ZHIGANSHINA - that name seems familiar somehow, but I couldn't place it. Did she used to skate for another country?

Sandra, do you happen to have the schedule for German Nationals?

The Beiers are just coming back from injury. They skated really well at the Oberstdorf Gala last night, to last season's OD, but their new programs won't be ready in time for either German Champs or Europeans. If they are ready by the end of Feb, they will have a skate off with the 2nd couple for Worlds selection.

Junior Champs Kolbe & Rebe skated their Tando OD last night and looked very good, a v. stylish dance.

The only person I know with that name is Natalia Zhigashina a Russian gymnast. Who is injured right now i believe.

Interesting, because this ice dancer is also named Natalya Zhiganshina.

I knew I had heard her name before. She used to skate for Russia with Denis Bazdirev, under the name "Nelli Zhiganshina". They last skated together in the 2004-2005 JGP. They were 4th at Courchevel (total score 136.16) and 6th at Kiev (total score 128.03). Apparently they split right after that season.

German Nationals Preview tidbits

Some more preview comments from the German press association article: http://de.sports.yahoo.com/03012007/30/eiskunstlaeufer-sawtschenko-szolkowy-em-titel.html

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy have made some changes to their programs and will use Nationals as a test run. They are in excellent shape and expect to use Nationals as a springboard to the gold medal at Europeans. Ingo Steuer had no problem getting accredited by his home federation (Saxony). :)

Stefan Lindemann made a coaching change after the Olympics (he's now in Berlin), but he has been out for months fighting a bacterial infection. Expectations are low because he's only been training full out since mid-December. He could have trouble getting his 6th national title.

Annette Dytrt, who spent the fall participating in a skating reality show, is skating singles again after Norman Jeschke decided not to continue. She had lost all her triples, except the toeloop, and has hired Karel Fajfr. "He's the one coach who can help me in this situation," she said. The competition is weak, so Annette may well be able to defend her title.

The Beiers are still out because of injury. As the only ice dance competitors, the Russian/German combination of Natalya Ziganschina and Alexander Gazzi are assured of the title.

I read this article earlier and if one thing is not true its the comment about Senior Ladies. I know we will see a lot of falls but I doubt Anette will be able to win if she only shows 3T. Guess we will know more by Saturday we will know more.

I for one am more interested in the Junior Ladies A competition. I think these youngsters will show more tripples than the senior ladies.

Denis Bazdyrev, former partner of Nelli Zhiganshina, is competing at Russian Nationals during this same time period with his new partner Xenia Schmyrina.

Sandra is definitely correct in having doubts about Annette Dytrt. She withdrew today citing lack of preparedness. Apparently she's been working 7 hours a day, but for only 3 weeks, and her coach said, "The problems with her triple jumps are still too great." Thus ends her season, but she apparently plans to continue working with Karel Fajfr at least through the winter.

S/S had trouble with the side-by-side jumps today, but the throws were well done.

Handke/Wende didn't skate because of his injury (groin pull?), but if he recovers, they will also go to Euros.
