What do you indulge yourself with?

I was just chatting with a friend about money and indulgences. She thinks that cell phones are a neccessity whereas I think they are luxuries - after all, they make our lives convenient, but are generally not a matter of basic survival. I would give up my cell phone before giving up cable/satellite TV service if given a choice.

Anyway, I was wondering what luxury people would indulge themselves with if it was the only 'extra' allowed beyond basic survival (comfortable home, no transportation issues (i.e. owns basic car to get around as needed, as opposed to BMW, Mercedes, Porshe) no problems putting food on table, acceptable wardrobe, etc)

If I had to pick an 'extra', I'd have to say spa services. I love to indulge myself with massages, facials, pedicures and/or manicures.

In my business, a cell phone is an absolute MUST--not a luxury, although I am really happy I have it! Plus, I like to be totally accessible in case of emergency. On two occasions I was called in the middle of the afternoon because my daughter became ill. If I go out at night, what if the babysitter needed me? I'd hate to think that my child was not well and I could not be reached immediately!

Also, I get my nails done (French tip acryllic fills) every other week and I started doing that because when I'm writing a contract or other assorted paperwork, my clients have nothing better to do than LOOK AT MY HANDS! Before my fills, I was always embarrassed about the way my hands looked but now I just love them! When I taught music, I never bothered because my nails were always breaking and cracking. That's my little luxury.

My cell phone is a necessity; especially when I travel by skytrain or bus. Also, I need it because I am on call sometimes with work and it is the easiest way to get hold of me.

My only real luxury is my internet connection through Shaw cable. I guess I could live without that. I used to connect through Vancouver free net through my telephone line. It's free, but slow. I may have to rethink this "luxury" in the next little while as my rates have gone up.

My only other luxury is that I buy my lunch at work once or twice a month. That's about it!!

I'm big on lottery tickets too. I buy one each week. Being a poor student, theres not much room for other luxuries. :( Oh, I thought of another one...every few weeks I get chinese food from "Ho Lee Chow"...yummy!

Too many things but mainly flowers and plants. Also, figure skating tickets and trips when I can. And many tapes for taping it. Probably have thousands.

Have you had any luck with the lottery tickets? I periodically win fifty or a hundred dollars. Have you thought much about what you will do with your winnings when you when? Have you tried slot machines? Also, what part of Canada do you live?

CellPhone debate

With regards to cell phones being a neccessity, my point was that most of have lived without one for most of our lives. I got my 1st cell phone 8 years ago - I've had one for less than 1/5th of my life. My parents raised my brother and I without the luxury of a cell phone. Overall, a lot of people still do not have cellphones and are quite content.

I'm glad I have one. They are very convenient to have during emergencies - assuming that you can get a signal. I have a cell phone Just In Case. I've only had to use it once for an emergency and I could've just as easily gone up to someone's house and asked them to call a tow truck for me - my car broke down in a residential area. I can certainly understand why they would be indispensable tools for Real Estate brokers and people who travel a lot.

My friend who felt it was a neccessity only lives 10 minutes from home. She sits at her desk for most of the day - if she is out of the office, it's for lunch or vacation or a personal day. Most places she goes to by herself are within 1/2 an hour from home - the rest of the time her husband drives. The only time she uses her cell phone is when she's shopping and wants to know what to bring home for take-out dinner for the husband and kids - she could do that just as easily from a pay phone. In her case, I really don't think a cell phone is a neccessity at all.

Mine would be 5 Star China Buffet. I don't overindulge though. I haven't been there in 6 months.

My calorie indulgence would be M&M's. You can't eat just one.

Daniel and Little Lulu,

I live pretty close to the Niagara Falls casino, but have only been there once. :D I usually don't win on lotto tickets...nothing over 10 dollars. but I got a free ticket on the Super 7 last night. So when I win, hopefully it will be big

Indulgences

I can't live without my cell phone. Otherwise when I am driving on the interstate, I am scared to death of getting stuck with no way to get help, especially with my car getting older and older. (The best way to get from my house which is in the middle of nowhere to anywhere else is over the interstate.)

If we count cell phones as necessities, my indulgence is skating tickets.

Re: Indulgences

Beautiful seats at the ballet. I spend far too much on this form of entertainment but it's available in NYC so why not? I'm not crazy about movies except one or two a season. I'm comfortable watching the METS lose on TV slugging a beer an pretzles Plays are too expensive and I'm too old to go standing room now.

Pedicures. I like to have my feet pampered and toe nails painted.

Oh, I forgot about Cell Phones. I do have one. It comes in handy once in a while.

I'm amazed, though, to listen to people talking on their cell phone like "Hi, Im on the train and we just left White Plains'. If that message was important (which I doubt) how did they get that message across in 1990?

Manicures and Starbucks. I try to get one or the other at least every other week.
My other guilty pleasure is Eminem. I hate most rap, but I really like his music.

Re: Indulgences

My DSL connection. I know I could live without it, but darn it all...I've grown so fond of being able to download music. I couldn't tell you the last time I actually bought a CD. Well, I take that back...I did buy Norah Jones' CD, only because I like her music and wanted to read the liner notes. :p
