New Q and A in SI with Michelle

    Really good read

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...02/22/kwan_qa/

especially love the quote where she says "the competitor in me does not die."

Very nice interview and she is very cool diplomatic. However, no question of romance.

One sentence jumped out at me: I don't know where I will be next year.

Does that mean she will be giving up college in Colorado Springs? she and the boyfriend broke up? or they are going to get married. or I'll be back home practicing? Kwan's always been tight lipped. But it's her life and she doesn't have to explain anything.

thanks for sharing. Knew she'd dodge the D/R question- but smart move on her part in this PC "world" (read: country).

SI: Do you want a role at the Beijing Olympics?

Kwan: I don't how I would be as a spectator because I've never gone to an Olympics and just watched. But I will definitely be there.
    hmm...commentator? Hope not *gag*

Maybe it's part of the amassador thingy?

SI: Would you ever do Dancing With the Stars?

    Kwan: No.
haha...if she did, anyway, who would her partner be? Inquiring minds would like...well, never mind.

SI: Do you think you still have the desire to train at the level it would take to compete at the worlds or U.S. championships?

Kwan: I believe so, yeah. The competitor inside of me does not die.
one can always be competitive in other areas...doesn't necessarily have to be skating...

I don't feel any sense of scholarly enthusiasm or committment to her studies in Michelle's interrviews. She says that she might or might not return to the University of Denver next year; maybe, maybe not, she will take some classes somewhere else. I don't feel any excitement along the lines of, wow! look at all the cool stuff I'm learning, I can't wait to get my degree so I can go out there and save the world through global diplomacy!

About the summer Olympics in Peking, this would seem like a perfect situation for the State Department to send her some place. Her trip last month to China was very successful -- and why not? she already has a natural connection to that country and the good will of millions of people there.

But what will she do there? Tell the Chinese fans, I am an American and I don't care about the Chinese athletes. Wow, How diplomatic can you bet?

But seriously, could she not go to Africa? and be like other celebs? or is she geared only to China?

I read in the interview that "I definitely want to stick with international studies and political science but I don't know where I will be ..." On MKF, I read translations of interviews with Chinese publications, where she said she wanted to study abroad in Bejing. So, I got a very strong feeling that the only thing that will take her away from completing her studies (somewhere) is a miracle cure that will bring her back to top competitive condition.

That's the question I am curious about, too. Does the State Department really regard Michelle as having future potential as a "U.S. public policy envoy," or will they just send her to China a time or two for photo ops with children, etc.

I think they should send her to Iran and give President Ahmadinejad a good talking to!

I agree that they should send her to Iran, but only when she gets her jumps back -- so she could practice a few triples on Ahmadinejad's face. A trip to North Korea could follow.

Seriously, though, I thought most of the celebrities who travel to Africa do so to promote various private charitable projects. So, it remains to be seen what, if any, other countries MK will visit for diplomatic purposes.

Well, both scholars and diplomats often specialize so focusing on China and Chinese (language) both seem like great ideas to me. (She does speak Mandarin or Cantonese, right?) Heaven knows China is important enough for the US to have some qualified and fluent specialists (for a change).

Yeah, but what about celebs in the North Africa who are starving? Angela Jolie knows and so do people who care.

A little bit off topic on this Michelle thread, but there have been feature stories both in International Figure Skating and in Spotlight on Skating about Jennifer Robinson's work with the World Vision organization, an international child advocacy group.

Jennifer visited Zambia in 2004 and more recently has been to Cambodia twice in connection with efforts by World Vision to bring attention to the plight of exploited and impoverished children in those countries. She speaks with great feeling about the "dump children" who live in garbage dumps and eek out a living by selling scraps of cloth and other things that they scavage. She also decries the child sex trade, which the Cambodian government feels it must tolerate because the country so desperately needs tourist dollars.

What kind of government wants that kind of tourists? Why will these politicians not take the moral high road?
