I have heard that there will be a tour starting later in the year which includes horses on the ice. Supposedly the tour starts in NY, goes cross country to LA, and includes some shows in Florida.

Does anyone know how I can find out which company is putting on this tour? or anyone that might be involved in this project?

Thanks for any input on this topic.

That's horrendous, imo, horses slip just as much as humans, and they do it with a lot more harm to themselves and the rider.

Horses run on icy tracks in the winter. When they do, they wear special shoes which have grips that keep them from slipping.

Thanks. I didn't know that. I use to ride many years ago and we would not ride if the conditions were icy, but if there are grips, well Tally Ho.

There is a show called Icelandics on Ice (http://www.icelandicsonice.com) that might be like what you are looking for...maybe you can try googling for more/better results, especially if you have more specific search terms than I did (I used "horses on ice").

Hi All, and thanks for the input. I really appreciate it.

I knew about the site above. He is a promoter.

I happen to own horses of this breed, and some of us are concerned about the
use of the horses on ice. It is pretty hard on their legs. The horse's
foot slides into place, and when you use hoof nails, it makes the hoof grab
in flight, and sends a torque up the horse's leg. The pounding of the hoof
on a hard surface can also cause concussive founder.

The US stopped the practice of horse racing on ice about 200 years ago.

We are just concerned for the horse. Yes, they do this in Iceland, but in
Iceland they have an overabundance of horses, and they are quite disposable,
and as part of their culture, they eat them; they are raised for meat.

Someone else found this for me:

"The world famous Ice Capades contracts with Icelandics on Ice

Ice Capades is the world's most famous show of all times to be
performed on ice and in all probability is the best known show in the
world. This show which was previously owned by Fox Entertainment is
now the property of Dick Garden and his family, which also owns and
operates a circus and other shows.

Dick Garden is now here in Iceland. The purpose of his visit is to
finalize a contract with the Icelandic horse show, Icelandics on Ice.
The contract provides for Icelandics on Ice to participate next winter
in more than one hundred shows in the United States with Ice Capades.
The history of this show spans almost 70 years and the show has
undertaken exhibition tours in more than 40 countries, becoming world
famous over the years. The show is a very well known trademark in the
United States and has, among other things, been featured in more than
one hundred movies. In the exhibition year 2007 to 2008 the show will
be presented in a completely new fashion.

Performances will be presented on a giant screen which has been
especially designed to satisfy all the demands of Ice Capades. It can
accommodate more than two thousand spectators and is equipped with a
comprehensive computerized weather management system. This makes it
possible to generate wind, snow, fog and various light conditions.
Also the sound and light system is the most perfect one available.
The whole show is presented on ice on three different platforms and is
accompanied by its own orchestra. Ice making machines which produce
more than 200 tons of ice a day are part of the show’s complex
technical equipment. About one hundred and fifty individuals of
various nationalities are associated with each performance.
Icelandics on Ice will provide 12 horses together with ten riders.
The Icelandic horses are the only horses in the show.

The performers in the Icelandics on Ice group are: Árni Sigfús
Birgisson, Dagbjört Rós Helgadóttir, Freyja Amble Gísladóttir, Elka
Halldórsdóttir, Hekla Hermundsdóttir, Lina Eriksson, Sjöfn
Sæmundsdóttir, Snorri Jóhannsson, Tinna Madesen and Þórhallur
Guðmundsson. Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir is also a member of the
group, but she will be handling special projects relating to public
relations and other aspects in cooperation with Ice Capades.

The Icelandic group will be leaving for New York next October and is
scheduled to make its debut on ice in Central Park as part of a
publicity event organized by Ice Capades.

From New York the group will travel to Phoenix in Arizona, where it
will be in training for five weeks. Then there will follow shows in
Scottsdale, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, Chicago,
Houston, Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and
Atlanta.

In Los Angeles, Ice Capades will organize a charity exhibition under
the title The Stars Shine, which will be attended by famous movie
actors, directors and nationally famous individuals. The organizers
of Ice Capades have high expectations of this joint effort and will
advertize the Icelandic horse as their principal drawing card. This
project is certain to generate by far the greatest publicity ever
given to the Icelandic horse in the United States. The show contract
envisages that the joint effort will extend into the year 2011.

Björn Ólafsson"

So, who the heck are the Ice Capades? and who is Dick Garden?

Thanks for any input.

The Ice Capades went out of business 10 years ago. I've never heard of Dick Garden.

I can't tell from your posts whether you are advertising this show or protesting it.

Protesting!

But I have found some info on the person and it appears there are some previous alleged charges of mistreatment of animals, and collecting for charities and not turning the money over to them....

It sounds to me like you already had this information before you came on this board asking about it. Yes?

No.

Subsequent to posting, I'd still been searching trying to find additional info.

We are against the use of a horse, of any breed, running on ice. In our opinion, it is not in the best interests of the horse, and can be detrimental to them. This was stated previously.

I have a little info on my website about horses on ice: http://iceryder.net/icetolt.html

Thanks to all for their input on this topic. It is appreciated.

there was a brief revival of Ice Capades in 2000- I went to the 2nd and middle show of the tour in Dayton , Ohio ( they had planned 20 or so, the 3rd one ended up being the last one).
I had ordered a program since they hadn't had them printed up yet (there was a barrel jumper named Steve, Pasha Walker, but no one super famous. About a year after the show ended Igot a check from the circus ( sterling reid I think)
that owned the show.
I also admitted the 95 ice capades show which had pink panther, mgm musicals- Charlene Von Saher was the star, Jennifer Ito was also in, Natasha Kuchini (now with Disney on Ice).
I would love it if Ice Capades came back but am not sure about the horses on ice part- althouhg I do remember a scene with horses in Snowden on Ice.

OK, I am not the Dressage King here, but my 2 cents says... If they had the proper skates stayed with Tarasova for coaching they might enjoy it

Sorry, this is serious.:scowl: Bad Seani! Bad.
IMHO, I don't think it sounds like anything but human entertainment at animal expense. Not cool IMO.

I can certainly see how a few horses might come in handy if the Zamboni brakes down in the middle of the rink.

Meh. People used to race sleighs over ice far more recently than two hundred years ago. Use the proper shoes and they're far safer than horses used for carriage touring in blistering summer weather on uneven pavement.

Resident ex-equestrian (quit that sport for one where, forget the horse, *I* was less likely to end up crippled.)
