    It's War

At about 10:30pm EST, President Bush announced that we were now engaged in war with Iraq.

So sad, I have a sick feeling in my stomach. My sister-in-law called her husband the other day from Saudi Arabia. She's stationed there for 6 months as a payroll specialist. She's in a tent, and it's one half mile to the nearest latrine.....42

    Good Wishes for the Soldiers

It certainly does make daily personal problems seem inconsequential, Ladskater. The war is here and, whether you agree with it or not, its time to support our (lol, well, or your neighbors) soldiers. They are doing their jobs and deserve all the respect and good wishes we can send to them.

    How Sad

    Jimmy Hoffa 2,

How horribly unsympathetic and shallow of you. My post said support your SOLDIERS, not your COUNTRY. An incredible difference. You don't have to agree with what they're doing to feel compassion for the things they will face.

    BronzeisGolden02,

My post was not in response to yours, so please relax. I do support the US soldiers, but not wanting to send them off to war and hoping they all come home safe is not an acceptable way of supporting them according to the patriots. Look around, not just this forum and you'll see that the accepted way of cheering on the soldiers is along the lines of "Show the world why America is number one!", "France is just jealous because we're the most important country in the world." It's the kind of stuff you see at a sporting event.

Do you know what I saw in a store window a couple of days ago? A big red white and blue foam finger that said "<strong>USA is #1</strong>". The kind you see at a basketball, baseball, or football game. Maybe they were left over from an Olympic Games, but I never saw them until recently.

So yes, I am praying for the US soldiers. But I am also praying for those "against" us who like Saddam no more than we do, are innocent in this whole thing, but will be caught in the line of fire.

    Is that better?

    Jimmy Hoffa 2,

Well, I'm sorry for jumping the gun, and do apologize. I was just angry because someone had shared their worries and concerns for a family member above and your comments seemed quite insincere. I do understand that type of patriotism and agree with you that its there, but thats a distinct portion of the population and I don't feel they have been represented in this thread as of yet.

It's all right. I am pretty angry myself. Today I made the mistake of going into a Burger King and ordering some "French fries", and half the people in line started yelling at me and some of the people behind the counter didn't look too happy either. I left because I didn't want to get into a fight, plus I was afraid my food might get spit in.

I DO support the war, as unpopular as that may be. I'm a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and spent four months in Bahrain during our LAST little spat with Iraq. So my opinions may well be different from many others.

I appreciate those who understand the difference between supporting our troops and supporting the war. The war is a done deal now, it's started, no "anti-war" protesting is going to stop it....NOW is the time to realize that the troops who are risking their lives did NOT make the decision to go to war, and that THEY deserve all our support, admiration and respect.

I will be wishing good thoughts to everyone involved in this turn of events, and will be hoping that the rest of our country will behave in a mature manner...

Let's try to be civil with each other. Your opinions are yours and one can disagree with them but they should allow them to be heard especially in Off Topic.

I don't think anyone is against the US military personnel (not even Jane Fonda) but there is the question of the war itself. Some of us, like me, do not believe war settles anything (the outcome of WWI led to WWII). And I cannot support a war which was started by my country. Sorry about that but I will not change that belief one iota.

Given I'm a loser - the war began! So far it's been limited. Hopefully, it is enough to chase the twirp out of Iraq. I just don't want to read about all those deaths. And my heart goes out to Show42. Hopefully, it won't get that far. It's enough problems living overseas as I am fully aware.

I am one of those occasional posters who prefer to lurk rather than openly comment. Believe me I have been tempted to put my fingers to my keyboard on many occasions in the past 2 weeks!

The comments above from BronzeisGold02 that patriotic American's opinions have not been put forth on this thread is quite true. As to possible reasons for this I can only express my own. I ask all of you given the outright hatred and vitrol that is surging around the internet on various forums who would want to come out of the partiotism "closet" only to get stoned for their opinions? While this forum is nowhere nearly as bad as many it is apparent here at times. I think when you can provide a safe haven for all posters no matter what their opinions may be that it will encourage more of the lurkers to step out from the shadows to put their "2 cents" and more on a public forum. The question is how do you create that "safe haven"? I, myself, do not know.

I also am one of those that thinks war doesn't solve anything. But, I will support all of the people involved whatever way I possibly can. Most of them were not the ones who wanted war. It's just the way things happened. I also will pray for not only them but the innocent people that are being bombarded. Sometimes you just get the feeling you don't want to live in this horrible world any more.

    Invading Iraq

    Hey all,

Like most people, I am upset by the beginning of war in Iraq. While my son is still sitting on his butt in the US and will probably continue the job he currently performs (Uncle Sam now considers him a specialist in Afghanistan. He says he's probably where he'll be for the duration as the men in green would have to train another monkey (his word!) to do his job.), I do know people who do have loved ones in harm's way.

The news about a marine ground attack this afternoon is especially disturbing. A friend has a son in the marines in Kuwait and they have assigned him to a job and a unit outside of his specialty, which is fire, search and rescue. He's the guy who spreads the foam and rescues the pilots in airstrip crashes. Except he's not this week. Please turn your good thoughts and prayers to Karen's son and all the others in peril in Iraq, ally or Iraqi.
