It ain't pain, it's presssure! You just think it's pain!

Well, I just got a tooth pulled earlier today. This is about my 16th trip to the dentist in the last 9 months. Last June, my dentist told me that I would need about twenty visits to correct my current dental problems. Now, my dentist says about eight more visits. I have had so many root canals over the last five years that I don't know how many of my teeth are real. Also, I am not good at the dentist. The last time I had a tooth pulled was when I was about 15 years old. I fainted. I have about three more root canals and some more fillings. My, dentist assures me that it won't be anymore than 10 more visits, max. I cannot wait until it is finished. The funny thing is my teeth look good. They could be a little whiter, (I smoke.) My dentist says that it's in my jeans. Anyway, just had to ventilate, (I was hyperventilating earlier)

Ps. I would like to add that I very much hate when the dentist gives you injections in the roof of your mouth.

It's me again. Please excuse my spell of jeans in my last post, it should be spelled genes, (I think). Anyway, Grandma will know.

Daniel-

Getting your teeth pulled is no picnic. About three years ago I had 8 teeth pulled. Lucky for me they put me under. The reason I had so many teeth pulled was because I had braces put on my very crooked teeth. After 2 1/2 yrs of braces I now have very straight teeth.
It is very important to take good care of your teeth so as to avoid gum problems as we get older.

Did you have all eight teeth pulled on the same day? I couldn't do it. I would have to be hospitalized.

oh, man

Root canals. I haven't had one, but still... OWWW!!!

I had 4 teeth pulled out on the same day, in preparation to get braces. Wonderful. My braces are also coming off in less than a year. Go me!

Re: oh, man

I've had a lot of root canals and the only times it really hurts is when they check the nerve to see if it's dead and the injections. My problem is holding my mouth open for long.
I've also had many teeth pulled. Had a lot of abcesses.

Daniel-I had all 8 taken out at once. It wasn't too bad, just had these holes in my mouth for awhile.

CartDi-I couldn't wait to get my braces off, but boy did it HURT:x

Here's a horror story......when my oldest was in 7th grade, he had four teeth pulled out for orthodonture purposes.....the day before football practice started. He put his mouth piece in the next day and took it out two hours later, all bloody and all. The coach threw a fit thinking he had injured his mouth during practice. That's real dedication......:p 42

Kzarah:

I must have at least a half a dozen teeth that have been root canaled, plus I have had extensive crown work done. The last tooth I had to have a root canal on was a back molar. It took eight needles to freeze my mouth! Plus I was in the chair for almost four hours. It was a four root canal job. I am not the best patient either. One visit to the dentist, I was getting a tooth filled and I had a panic attack when the dentist put the rubber dam on my mouth. They had to remove it twice before they could proceed.

I hate going to the dentist!

I've had a few fillings, semi-impacted wisdoms pulled out 20 years ago (I looked like Alvin the Chipmunk for several days--it wasn't pretty), but besides that, I haven't had a root canal or a crown or anything along those lines. HOWEVER, my dentist says I need a crown and I'm a bit FREAKED. I've been with him for 7 years and I trust his judgement completely... I'm just a bit of a weenie in that department. Ironically, when my dentist replaced my silver fillings with whatever white stuff looks more natural, I refused novacaine--just wanted a bit of gas and he found it amazing that I felt absolutely nothing. (He said most people want both.) Go figure. I wonder how much longer I can put off that crown business. :( :x

Fortunately, I've been dentally blessed - only 2 cavities including baby teeth and 2 wisdom teeth removed. The only pain with the wisdom teeth was eating for a couple of days afterwards - only mashed potatoes and soup could be handled. No swelling though. Believe me, I'm knocking on wood.

I do brush my teeth at least 2x a day. My dentist wants me to floss more often.

RGal.......I've had four crowns "installed".....they aren't really any worse than having a filling and less painful than a root canal............I had an impacted wisdom tooth chipped out by a dentist when I was 18. He accidently cut the nerve along side my tongue and I went instantly numb. I never got back complete feelings on that side of my tongue. I kept burning my tongue on hot foods for the longest time........42

i HATE going to the dentist

Just changed to a new dentist listed on my hubby's insurance. He's nice enough I guess, he hasn't done any thing painful to me yet, just a filling that was the most pleasant dental experience I've ever had it was over in a flash and no ugly silver! When did they improve that? It was a white filling, nice!

I have to have scaling done, which is basically scaping away the hardened tartar BELOW the gums, yikes!! I have to go back four more times to complete the procedure. Half an hour on each side, top and bottom. I KNOW this is going to be painful and I can't believe I had to pay to have someone to cause me so much pain, but I want to have healthy teeth I guess. I'm just not good at dentists because I had braces for four years and my orthodontist was an a**hole, he was never nice to me and I think he tightened my braces tighter than they should have been to spite me because he didn't like me! But that's all behind me but it's still hard not to be mad at the person who is causing you so much pain, I know, I know, grow up right!

Re: i HATE going to the dentist

You are lucky. The silver fillings have mercury in them and that is one of the things that made my daughter so ill. If I have any more fillings put in or removed I am going to a special dentist that knows how to do it. If they aren't removed properly, they give you more mercury poisoning. Regular dentists don't do it right.

Re: i HATE going to the dentist

Thanks Danny. When we took her stuff out of storage, (she is living in a low income apt. in Larned) it was all musty and made her worse. Had to throw out a whole bunch of her furniture, couch, chair, etc. She left last Sunday for Ft. Worth and they are trying out some different treatments. She plans on being there about three weeks. Hope she doesn't decide to stay there longer.
