Re: VANCOUVER 2010

CBC has awesome Olympic coverage! I watched mostly that station, instead of the US NBC for the last two winter games. CBC kept coverage on, while NBC went to commercial break, so they show many more skaters. Plus, there was about a four second difference in the action, for some reason, so I would watch a jump on CBC, then turn to NBC to see it again! It was weird seeing live TV two times.

Nymkfan,

I personally feel that the CTV coverage of the Olympics is FAR superior to the American broadcasting. CTV tends to cover more of all of the athletes, rather than focusing strictly on the home country. I have watched NBC coverage often, because I like hearing about the American athletes, but have at the same time waited with anticipation for the Canadian coverage because I know I will see more of EVERY one, not just the Canadians. I found this so in all sports, not just skating.

I LOVE watching these channels, in no particular order:

1. CBC
2. NBC
3. CBC(Quebec) - very funny commentators and they ooh and aah while commentating.

If only I can get the Eurosport channel or some European channel...

CBC has Olympics now. CTV hasn't had any Olympics since Lillehammer.

Re: VANCOUVER 2010

Wonderful news for Vancouver and for Canada! I'm sure the Vancouver Winter Olympics will be beautifully staged and as memorable, if not more so, than the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

Here's hoping we see the kind of magical figure skating that held us at the edge of our seats in 1988 -- the Battle of the Brians, Liz Manley's great skating, Katarina Witt's second gold medal, Katia and Sergei winning their first Olympic gold medal, a young Midori Ito tearing up the rink with her super jumps.

WOW! :D :D :D

Interesting that Vancouver won by only three votes over North Korea. I always wonder what kind of politicking goes on at these meetings.

I've heard that Vancouver is beautiful. Will definitely consider this trip. Does Colonial Travel have Oly tours?

I believe Pyongchang is a city in South Korea. Considering the state North Korea is in, I doubt many people are even insterested in watching the Games, let alone running for its hosting right.

And yes, a sunny day in Vancouver is indeed incredibly beautiful :D

Attention all Canadian figure skating fans.

Do you realize that having the 2010 Olys in Vancouver make the possibilty of having the 2012 Summer Games in New York City an imposibility?

Do you think the brass are going to have concurrent Olympics in the same continent?

I'll bet New York is out and London is in. I can see the Queen opening up the games and wishing the Brits cheers.

Joe and MM

Perhaps I am reading more into your posts than intended, so for clarification purposes :

I do realize that New York's chances to host in 2012 are possibly affected by the 2010 decision, but does this mean that we as Canadians shouldn't be proud to have received the honour of hosting? I get the impression from both of you that perhaps you are a little "miffed" by the decision.

I hope I am wrong and that both of you are pleased for the Canadian contingent on this board who will have the opportunity to attend an Olympics in their home country just as we were pleased (green with envy, but pleased nonetheless) for our American posters who had the opportunity in SLC. Canada has just as much right to host as does the United States, and perhaps consideration was given to Canada because the US has had 2 Olympic games since Canada last hosted.

Re: VANCOUVER 2010

The Olympics are still a long ways off and it's going to cost us a fortune, but hopefully it will generate some revenue for BC. I know I will not be making the trek to Whistler, but it would be great to see some of the skating. I did not go to the Worlds when they were here, except for the skating hall of history (that was wonderful)! Though some are still against it; most people are "pumped" for it so - "let the games begin."

PS - It would be great to meet some of my "pen pals" from
GS!

Re: VANCOUVER 2010

I did visit Whistler a few years ago. Absolutely state of the art skiing area. The ski events should be great. I did not see a stadium for ice skating but then I wasn't really looking. It was summer and who's thinking winter?

As I remember, Vancouver is a good 2 plus hour drive from Whistler.

Joe,

Skiing, Luge, Bobsled and that kind of outdoor stuff will be in Whistler. Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Hockey will be among the events in Vancouver.

Dear Skating Canadian (see, I can't even say that bad word):

Now you've gone and hurt my feelings. I was just pulling Joe's leg a little, he being a big New York booster. Of course I am tickled to pieces about the Olympics coming to Vancouver. I can go, and visit my sister in Seattle and my mother in Spokane on the same trip. (Mom will be 97 then!)

If it helps, my favorite male skater is Brian Orser. I think he deserved to win in Calgary, and also (except for school figures) in Sarajevo.

Your friend, Mathman:)

Joe and MM,

I am so pleased I was wrong!!!!! I didn't think you two were by any stretch "anti-canuck". Thank goodness I was wrong about 2 of my favourite posters!

Re: To Joe and Mathman

NY would be a bad spot for the Oly's anyway;) But apparently better than San Francisco (which was fine by me - I didn't want all the traffic! It's bad enough as is.)

My one concern about Vancouver is that, if I recall correctly, the trip between Vancouver and Whistler is along a road not made for much traffic. The scenery along the route is stunning, but isn't it a two lane road? Are they going to have the athletes staying in two separate places depending on where their events?

Lad, you aren't going to go? Are some of the events like cross country cheap or even free? If you are within a few hours it'd be fun to check it out - even for a bit, I'd think.
