My son got an instant message this morning on his computer before school letting him know that they were going to kick my sons a$$ after his first period and that they would have a knife. I took this threat pretty serious and contacted the school. Of course the school can't do anything unless they know who it is. Since people are anonymous on the internet it seems impossible to track anyone down. So how do you catch a cyber bully?

That's horrible, dlk.........I've heard of this before. Is there a way to block incoming messages? 42

I know there has to be a way of determining who it is but have no idea how to find out. Hope you come up with something. Do you not have their email address. You could put it on block sender. That's what I do with spam. Sure hope you find out who it is.

there could be ways to figure that out, but it is possible. I doubt that if were the immaturity minded to do such a stupidity malicious childish bully belligerent act, they didn't have the brains to cover their trax, but they could.

The first thing I would conceder is to have someone following him to find the kids who sent it. A couple of teachers escorting him through the halls will draw attention and response from the others that could be watched from behind to see the "hidden response" of the kids after he passes with the two teachers. This could give indication of who knows what.

Most likely they are writing it off as a child's prank and not taking it seriously, AND /OR they are just lazy IMO.

it's a cop out with the school. they should at least highten their own security level.

I'd also get local authorities involved.

Fortunately nothing happened to my son today. They did have someone escort him to his classes.

Recently I happened to see this episode of a Catholic youth TV show which deals with cyber bullying. The young woman who had to deal with it is very impressive. I think her experience might be relevant for your family.

Go to the Episodes section, and scroll down to the show called The Internet: A New Source of Gossip, Rumors & Ruining Reputations.

Keep copies of all of those emails sent. Give a copy to the school. And see if you can get your internet service to give you the IP address from where it was sent. With what's going on these days, I don't think the police would laugh it off either.
I have a young lady graduating 8th grade this year. Many kids think this sort of stuff is funny until someone Very Large has a little talk with them. Good luck.
