Fetal: for him or against him?

Some people may prefer the anonymity of a poll.

Are you in agreement with Fetal's suspension? Do you think his posts should just be deleted if they bring in complaints from other posters? Do you think Fetal should be banned?

my 2 cents about polls

"the anonymity of a poll"

People who are not even registered ezboard posters can participate in these polls, it is a flaw in the ezboard polling system. Yes, there is anonymity, but there is no pre screening of who is qualified to vote. This system serves the more fluffy kind of polls well e.g. who is your most favorite skater, or do you prefer babyballerina's costume #1 or costume #2? I dont think the ezboard polling set up suits more serious topics well.

I respect Paula's decision. :)

Re: my 2 cents about polls

It seems most of the posters at "Le Cafe" are posters who frequent GoldenSkate and are familiar with the "Fetal" situation, and therefore, they will be the most likely candidates to vote in this poll. The point of this poll is for the "lurkers" who don't like to post but who are familiar with the "Fetal Situation" will be able to voice their opinion without giving up their anonymity, if they don't choose to.

On another note: if some stranger does happen to come across this poll, the point is pretty simple - either you are for banning a poster who says things that maybe you don't agree with or like/don't find amusing, you agree that such posts should just be deleted or you don't agree with censoring any of the posts - if you take out Fetal's name, the point and opinion should be the same. Also, this "random" visitor to Le Cafe could also educate themselves quite easily to this specific point by reading Rgirl's Thread "Fetal's Suspension".

I am not against him but he seems to be like a naughty child. Apparently, he was warned time and time again about some of his offensive posts. If he isn't disciplined, where does it stop? Does he just get away with whatever he wants and too bad about everyone else?

Paula is the administrator. Whatever she says goes.

I am going to say that I agree with his suspension. I didn't vote because every time it puts the whole topic so I have to scoot it back and forth to read it and it takes too long.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Is one really allowed to say? I made a comment or two about his behavior and was "put down" for not favouring his "off colored" bannter. So, I am moving on to a strictly Canadian forum.

I did not vote. Hopefully, Fetal will return and I wish him the best.

I still believe no matter who we are here - "decorum is the better part of valour." I love figure skating, and hate to see anyone make a mockery of it. Even if the posts were all in fun - it was in bad taste. Sorry, I "stand my ground" on that one.

Ladskater

PS - the only reason I used to come on this folder was because sometimes the topics got too silly to reply to in the Edge folder and there was nothing interesting to talk about. I also enjoy talking about movies and music with some of the other posters. Even skaters have outside interests.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Personally, I thought Fetal brought a great sense of humor and provided some great info about figure skating. I can't say I like 100% of all his posts, but everyone has their likes and dislikes, and if I don't really like or care what someone has to say about a particular skater or anything in general, I just take it with a grain of salt and remember that everyone has their own sense of humor, and everyone has an opinion. Besides, who really took Fetal's last post seriously? I doubt Fetal is writing a letter to Kurt Browning asking him to father Yuka Sato's child ( and Fetal, if you're reading this, don't get any bright ideas from what I wrote:p )

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Do I think that Fetal should be banned? No, not at this point. I would rather see his really objectionable posts deleted. Regarding the cross-board post to MKF of his poll...that was a mistake on his part. That is one thing with which I do agree. He took it too far. Normally I just lurk on this board but situations such as this cause me to find my small soapbox and add my 2 cents worth to the pile. As I wander 'round the internet looking for skating sites I drop in on them to see the kinds of folks that post there and the topics that are discussed. I liked this board because of the in-depth discussions that take place on the nuts-and-bolts of skating from technique to politics. I like the wide difference in viewpoints. The people who are here are wiser on these things than I am so a lurk a lot and soak up the info. Fetal is one of the people I read even though a lot of his stuff is off-the-wall and at times down right macbre(sp?). He has an off-beat, often raw, sense of humor, and he definitely marches to the beat of a different drummer more than a lot of us do. He adds spice to the mix of people here like adding a whole jalepeno pepper to a small pot of chili! If he decides to return(which I really hope he does) I would hope to see more of his skating knowledge and a slightly toned down dose of outrageousness (but not too much). One last thought and then I'll return to lurkdom. It is sad that some folks would thing of leaving this board because of Fetal's behavior towards them or others. I like the idea of taking things with a grain of salt(sometimes it's a 10 pound grain!!LOL). However, everyone does what they feel they must at the time, I suppose.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

I haven't been able to post for a long time (work has been insane), but I have been lurking frequently and keeping abreast of the situation here. I, for one, will be very sad if Fetal doesn't come back:( . I'll really miss his humor and wit. He's one of the many reasons I still like to check in here:D . Maybe it's my crazy NYC sense of humor (rgirl can appreciate that too, I'm sure, being a fellow New Yorker ;) ) but nothing personally shocks or offends me anymore. I can see how some people could be offended by some of the posts, but I am in the camp that advocates skipping over those posts with which you have a problem! Each one of us has the power to censor information for ourselves. Maybe it's the lawyer  in me that thinks freedom of speech and freedom of choice (to read or not to read) is the best course. OTOH, maybe being a sex crimes prosecutor for many years has numbed/dulled my senses too much and I am incapable of being offended any more:rolleyes: . I think I would be permanently banned from this board with the stories I could tell:cool: !

free speech, free will and the www

I am 100% supportive of free speech. There are regional, and international differences on what kind of material is offensive. Most adults have the ability to censor information themselves, but how about children and teenagers. It would be nice if whoever is posting the controversial materials to at least warn the readers.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Borgy - Welcome back. It's been ages. Hope you saw the ABT boys on Public TV the other night.

It's not a question of free speech. It is more like the varied perceptions viewers have. I have watched Howard Stern on TV. I gave him three viewings. I grew up in this town and I don't shock easily. IMO, that is Stern's game. Shlock is of no interest to me. I have seen, heard and done it all. (That's a George Sanders quote.) What's the point? I just never have returned to Stern's show, but I still watch TV.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Hi Joe! It's good to actually have the time to post and not just scan the board quickly when I get a few minutes! I missed the PBS special - forgot to tape it:( . I hope they will rerun it soon - PBS usually does - don't they?

I agree with your Howard Stern analogy and would apply it to this situation - if you read a few posts that you don't like and find offensive, then the answer is to ignore those posts and keep reading the ones you do enjoy. I think it would be sad if we lost members of this board over this.

I do see the point that was made that there might be children or teenagers as members and some of the subject matter may be too R rated for them. Hopefully, they stay away from those topics. My sense is that most posters are adults here, which is one of the reasons I like this forum so much :) .

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

I agree with the suspension. He was warned. However, a certain other poster made a rather personal attack on me, implying I was stupid and knew nothing (remember when Will Sears passed away?) This same poster also made incredibly rude remarks about Navarro/Schmalo (which I noticed were removed promptly), so I was thinking if Fetal was suspended for a bit, perhaps that poster was no less offensive and perhaps should have suffered the same fate.
I'd like to see some equality (or perhaps there was equality dispensed, since I have not seen this other poster here as of late).
Thanks

Meg and other posters. There is a procedure to draw the moderator's and the administrator's attention to such personal bashings. Please check out Forum Info. This can be dealt with.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Thanks, Joe. Should this happen to me again, I will be more than happy to do just as you suggest. I guess I was surprised at the venom in the diatribe/put down because that doesn't usually happen on this board.

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Interesting how Fetal continues to dominate the board, even in abstentia.

Borgy, I didn't know you were a lawyer. Would you like to comment on the legal question (pro bono, of course  ) that came up in the Jamie and David movie thread in the edge?

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

Well, I like Fetal. I've chatted with him a few times, and yes, he can get outrageous, but then just log off the chat! However, this is Paula's board, and as such, the final decision is hers.

For the record, I voted for the deletion of offensive posts (though I must have missed something? I haven't read any of his posts that were so offensive as to be deleted), not the suspension.

But it's not my board. :p

cheers,

Laura :)

Re: Fetal: for him or against him?

This entire discussion is RIDICULOUS because it would take Fetal about 5 minutes to toodle on over to someone else's computer and re-register under a different user name and lurk during his hand slapping period. Believe me, he's here! (Hi, hon, how are ya?) :rollin:

You're probably right, except, do you really think he could hold his tongue (fingers) for this long?
