I've compiled this list to let skating fans know about some of the larger club or other significant competitions this summer and early fall in case there might be interest in attending a local competition in your area for the first (or umpteenth!) time. The U.S. senior and junior international skaters are likely to appear at one or more of these competitions to try out their new programs, as well as get IJS feedback from the international/national judges and technical panels.

For me, one of the most enjoyable things about attending major club competitions in the summer is to get an early preview of new programs (see a music compilation list-in-progress for the 2007-08 U.S. team envelope skaters posted at: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?p=253644#post253644 ), to see which skaters have improved, added new skills, are landing their jumps this early in the season, to make new skater discoveries at the "grassroots" level and follow their progress through the season, etc. Note to club competition newbies: It's always a bonus if skaters land more jumps than not at these summer comps, and so better to have somewhat lower expectations in this particular area. ;)

Hidden Valley Open, July 5-9, Escondido, CA
Nicholas LaRoche (assigned to Nepela/Sr. B) and Richard Dornbush (JGP) are scheduled to exhibit their new programs this weekend and there are other skaters from recent Nationals making their competition debuts for the season.

Wow, thanks Sylvia. Too bad we can't get any TV coverage. Most of us don't get to see the top skaters unless they are shown at nationals. You would think ESPN or someone would be interested in covering something. But ESPN is buzy showing the hot dog eating competition. We know how important that competition is. :eek:hwell:

Aston (not marked on some maps) is about 22 miles SW of downtown Philadelphia and 12.5 miles NE of Wilmington, Delaware. It's just west of I-95.

Liberty had been covered on local cable a few years back IIRC...in fact Nancy Kerrigan hosted the event. I am sure Sylvia can pull up the old info. Not sure if this will happen again.

Yes, the CN8 regional cable network broadcast some of the top senior men's and ladies' free skates at Liberty in 2005. I haven't heard that they will be taping again (although some Liberty videos could show up again in the FSVids forum eventually...).

Since I last posted, skater rosters have been published for Skate Detroit, Lake Placid Dance (up to junior), the Québéc Summer Championships, and the State Games of America (see links above).

Skate Detroit roster can be viewed at:
http://www.sk8stuff.com/utility/lister_event_detail.asp?id=3554
Senior Men: Parker Pennington, Tommy Steenberg, Rohene Ward, Jonathan Cassar, and 2 from Canada - Karolin Metivier & Ken Rose.
Senior Ladies include: Megan Oster, Maria Papasotiriou (GRE), Erica Archambault, Megan Hyatt, Katy Taylor [later withdrew], and Lesley Hawker and Diane Szmiett from Canada.
Senior Pairs SP (4 teams): Castile/Okolski and Vlassov/Meekins [later withdrew], Butler/Jacobsen (JGP), and Beriau/Merritt.
There are notable Junior men, ladies and pairs to watch as well.

thanks sylvia.
I'm really suprised that Lesley Hawker got 69.09 for her LP!! What happened to her? Personally, I don't really like her skating but I'm still wondering what she did to earn this low score.

Is Caroline Z doing any summer club competitions? She did Golden West in the past. It's at her home club after all.

Zhang must compete at least at one summer event as she is required by USFS "B" envelope status to compete and be monitored before her GP season.

Sylvia - Any info on the Entrants to MidAtlantics would be much appreciated.
Don't worry, I'll post a link once the roster is published online. :)

No need to read too much into a low score in a summer comp. since most skaters are focusing on trying out their new programs in a public, competitive setting. In the Skate Detroit Senior Ladies FS Final, Hawker landed a triple lutz, a triple toe and a double axel but had 4 falls (she scored 74.74 in her earlier qualifying FS). She still has 3 months to train before Skate Canada.

I've heard that Zhang will likely compete at Golden West -- this is still unofficial and we'll have wait and see if her name appears on the roster there (and if she competes).

I saw Bebe land a great 3/3 in practice.... but i had no idea she was so serious about landing them in competition. I am really excited for her... i hope that she can pull it togther by nationals, she was so good and solid in practice.
I can't belive Danille was placed ahead.... bebe was clearly the winner on practice ice!

I think Bebe is aware of the Zhang/Nagasu threat to Senior Ladies and will come out full blast at US Nats. She's overdo for a worlds try.

Joe

Bebe won the Ladies event at the Silicon Valley Open, but her scores weren't outstanding: 43.26 SP, 89.12 FS and 132.38 overall. She fell on the 3/3 attempt in both programs. I'm sure she will improve her marks as the season moves along. Let's see how she does in international competition at CoC and CoR.

BTW, Rachael Flatt won the Broadmoor (59.00 SP, 82.52 FS [injury], 141.52 overall), Liberty (49.96 SP, 107.19 FS, 157.15 overall) and Colorado Championships (no scores available). Rachael attempted the 3Z3T in her Broadmoor SP and Liberty SP and FS and got credit for it in the Broadmoor SP and Liberty FS.

Of course, Rachael won't be able to go to Worlds because she is too young. BeBe has a chance to go, but she has to be able to land her jumps at the US Championships.
