It seems that when people speak of world champions and medalists, they tend to talk about the world champions who repeat, who do something new for skating, etc. And why shouldn't they, right? Those people gave something to the sport.

There are world champions and medalists, however, who are rarely mentioned--I thought I'd start a thread with their names and some videos =)

Shishkova/Naumov RUS - 1994 Worlds (1st)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HQrvrrpB3X8

Kovarikova/Novotny CZE - 1995 World champions, I could only find their 1994 world performance
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1kFHDM-hMQc

Holly Cook USA - 1990 world bronze medalist
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KiFkatem_GQ

Claudia Leistner FRG - 1983 and 1989 World silver medalist
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-x-YGym7yTA

Anna Kondrashova URS - 1984 World brinze medalist (but I couldn't find it--she does the first doughnut spin I've seen)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dC0ol3n4k7s

Kira Ivanova URS - 1985 World silver medalist (I would've posted her 84 bronze in the Olympics, but that was just bad--this one was OK--here you see a very young Maria Tchaikovskaya, Maria Butyrskaya's coach)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YvGsx181YOk

I'm sure there were others that I've forgotten...

(on a sidenote, a majority of the 80's music for the ladies was so bad!)

Ditto on the 80s music. My favorite bad 80s track which somehow worked brilliantly though was Debi Tomas' Olympic sp music to Dead or Alive's "Something in My House" or something like that.

Great idea - I will admit that I have forgotten about these skaters - and likely many more!

Julie Lynn Holmes, 1971 World Silver Medalist, 1970 World Bronze Medalist-- could only find her 1969 Worlds performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNP6VaJZzE0

Dagmar Lurz, 1980 World Silver Medalist, 1980 Olympic Bronze Medalist, 1977 World Bronze Medalist:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB3_2Omr4Ec

Emi Watanabe, 1979 World Bronze Medalist. This is her 1980 Olympic LP; she came in 6th:

I wish I could find footage of Regine Heitzer from Austria. She won the 1962 World Bronze Medal and the Silver in 1963, 1964, and 1965, and she won the Olympic Silver Medal in 1964. She won the silver at the European Championships in 1960-1962 and 1964, the bronze in 1963 and the gold in 1965 and 1966.

I also wish I could find footage of Christine Errath from East Germany, who won the World Bronze in 1973 and 1975, Gold in 1974 (the year I was born!), and Silver in 1976. She won the European Championships from 1973-1975 and the bronze in 1976. She also won the Olympic Bronze Medal in 1976.

It's sad that these ladies accomplished so much, but we can't see them skate! :frown:

first person that came to my mind is Lu Chen. How much I loved her butterfly lover routine.. We don't seem to have anybody these days who can match her maturity and beauty on ice.

Not sure if there's another thread for this, but watching these performances reminded me of others (which lead to others...) Leading to:

Does anyone know if there is a video of Hartshorn and Sweiding performing to "1492'? It was in the first show I ever saw, and I've always remembered it...

I used to catch myself considering Petr Barna as totally obscure skater in spite of his silver olympic medal (and I remember those Olys very well!).
Strange - the performance of his life is not on youtube! So this is an evidence isn't this?
But there's his 1991 Worlds SP performance - he was awarded a perfect 6.0 for this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DeKljiSV_cA

Maybe Jill Trenary is forgotten to some extent. I mean most of us remember her as Christopher Dean's wife at first, and only then recollect than she was a world champion :)
Here's her triumph:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kFxBgF7jc-k - 1990 Worlds LP

I would personally like to mention Scott Davis (I suppose he is no way "forgotten" in the US but this is not the case for the rest of the world unfortunately) but he has never been the world medalist. But he definately worth the mention :)

And my favorite "forgotten" skater is Vyatcheslav Zagorodniuk  What a grace, refinement and manliness at the same time!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uRgeK60M4EA - the only youtube video I could find...

blue dog sorry me for being the pain in the neck - maybe I'm just in the mood for nit-picking) but can't say Yelena ;) Tchaikovskaya was so young at the time - he was in her mid forties I believe) But of course it's not an eldery age in any case) And thanks a lot for the link I was glad to revive one of Kira's best ever performances.

Sorry =( I didn't know what her true age was. she looked very young in the video, nonetheless. I can't believe she's in her 60's! Her dye job is very good.

One world medalist I cannot find anywhere is Julia Soldatova of Belarus (she won bronze for Russia in 1999). Of course, I wish I could also find Claudia Kristofics-Binder of Austria (world silver, 82).

Here are more...

Charles Tickner, 78 gold medalist
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WpKf5m0tCoM

Beatrix Schuba, 72 Olympic champion
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kdJLmn6ucMU

Pershina and Akbarov, 85 European bronze medalist
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4MJmPhOWCAM

Seleznyeva and Makarov, 84 Olympic bronze medalist (theirs is in similar difficulty to what we'd find today!)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=efBIh2WWE9s

Dagmar Lurz, 80 Olympic bronze medalist, 80 world silver medalist
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YB3_2Omr4Ec

Thank you all for sharing the videos you'd found =)

yes she was born in 1939 so she looks awesome for her age:)
Meanwhile her first student was Tatiana Tarasova, and then Elena worked with Pakhomova & Gorshkov. All three had their 60th anniversary this autumn/winter

wow she's coached many champions indirectly! she's like the mother of russian figure skating!

on another note, Veronika Pershina is married to Igor Shpilband, am I wrong?

Kid Trivia: Their 14-year-old daughter, Ksenia Makarova, qualified for 2007 U.S. Nationals at the Novice level (7th place) and will compete at the Junior level this season. She was landing triples through loop last season.

Pershina WAS married to Shpilband -- she has since re-married and now goes by Veronica Voyk. Pershina's and Shpilband's two children are competing at the USFS (non-qualifying) lower levels.

Mark Mitchell, who currently coaches many young skaters in Boston, never medalled at Worlds but he came close (4th) in 1993. Here's Eurosport coverage of Mitchell's 1993 Worlds SP to "The Blue Danube/Die Fledermaus Overture" (he received a 6.0 for presentation from the Russian judge!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gisQcA33_Jo

It seems all those skaters that have "Been Forgotten" come out of the 80s and 90s. I can imagine that you have no idea who skated in the 30s through the 70s.

Ah, Youth, it is so wasted on the young. No skating history whatsoever.

Well, Joe, that's all well and good, but I believe that it's as difficult to find YouTube footage of 1939 World Champ Graham Sharp as it is to find 1896 and 1906 World Champ Gilbert Fuchs. I guess a lot of people back then forgot to set their TiVo's. ;) Heck, the only vid you can find of Uncle Dick skating is his first triple jump, and it's not even the whole program.

Incidentally, you can find footage of Ulrich Salchow, but I'm pretty sure no one has forgotten about him, since we hear his name a gazillion times each competition:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNzLnTq8vE

Apparently, if you were a ten-time World Champion and Olympic Champion back then, you had to skate around random dogs that wandered onto the ice.

No footage of Madge Syers that I can find, but James R. Hines' Figure Skating: A History has a nice discussion of her being "Skating's First Feminist," because in 1902, she entered the then all male World Championships. She placed second behind Ulrich Salchow. Her actions led to the creation of a women's event. She also skated pairs with her husband Edgar Syers, and is the "only champion to medal in two events at the same Olympics". There are a couple of good pictures of her in the book as well.

I'm still waiting for someone to come up with Belita (Helen Jepson) who was the first skater to do a 180 degree spiral.forwards and backwards.

Someone R Us! I tried a Google image search on "Belita" and got 12 pages of hits. But none was our gal.

(BTW, I think you confused skater Maria Belita Jepson-Turner with Helen Jepson, the opera singer.)
