I watch this show all the time. I don't have any personal experience with the show but I sure would like them to come to my house and do a few rooms!

Guess I'm going to live up to my name.......sigh.

I used to be hooked on Trading Spaces until they did a home in Atlanta. One of the teams was comprised of a single gal who had a 'friend' of hers as her partner. That 'friend' was a former coworker of mine at a top-end decorator retail store there......the stuff they put in her neighbor's house came directly from the warehouse where she works, and I know from working there myself that there is no way, given what they added to the room, that they decorated that kitchen for under $1000.

Sorry to be such a spoilsport, but I calls them likes I sees them. :p

Re: Trading Spaces

I'm a bit hooked on this show, mostly because I think they do a horrible job most of the time (did anyone see that new episode where one designer stapled 6,000 live flower buds to somebody's bathroom wall??!!) I'd like to see that room 2 weeks later when the petals started falling off.

I noticed the designers always saying "well, I got a great deal on fabric" and sometimes bringing in something they just happend to "find" at a garage sale. Baloney!

I can't imagine why anyone would allow them to enter their homes. Did anyone see the one where the red headed designer did the "sunburst" theme in someone's master bedroom? I actually thought it was OK -- but the woman hated it and after the cameras were turned off had the designer "escorted" out of her house. They were on "the view" and revealed this little tidbit.

They guy who is the absolute worst is the one who turned someone's family room into a movie theatre (they didn't want that) and also when another family said "just don't touch the fireplace" he immediately went to work at completely changing the fireplace (this is the episode where the woman of the house could be heard sobbing in the background).

what a great show!!

Re: Trading Spaces

Darn Steve, I missed the other episodes, but did catch the "flower power" bathroom. I thought it was hideous and would have been sobbing myself. I wonder if the couples sign a disclaimer of some sort? Some of the rooms are a definite improvement........well, I guess you get what you pay for (or don't pay for in this case!) 42

Re: Trading Spaces

they do have so sign a disclaimer, and once the 2 days are up, the Trading Spaces crew is outta there and is not responsible if the home owner hates it and has to pay thousands to have whatever they did fixed. They joked about it on "The View" by saying "sometimes we're on the first plane out!"

I still can't believe that woman used real flowers. Not only was it hideous, but its going to fall apart. She should have used silk flowers. That couple is going to have a fine time removing 6,000 flowers, each individually stapled to their wall, when they want to re-do it (which I'm sure they will). I think they were nice about it because they were friends with the other designer (the red head).

Re: Trading Spaces

Steve-

I'm pretty sure they were silk flowers. They came in boxes and I remember Paige pulling the buds off the stems. They would've shredded in hers hands if they weren't silk.

At any rate, I would have been SOOOOOOO mad if that was my bathroom. Sure, I know you have to sign a disclaimer, but come on! Look at the sytle of the rest of the house!

I lOVE the show, however. I'm tempted to sign up with my sister-in-law and brother who live next door. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough though. If I could pick my designer, or at least have a choice, I'd sign up in a heart beat. Under the current rules, my luck would be that I'd be selected and get Doug, Kia, or Hilde as my designer!!

Re: Trading Spaces

I thought they were fresh cuz at one point she was taking bouquets of flowers out of boxes and they looked like the kind you get down at the grocery store... but hopefully they were silk! Still, not something I'd want to come home to -- I see we agree on which designers we don't like - Doug, Hilde and Kia!! They obviously have their own agenda and don't really care what they home owners want. I usually like Genevieve's rooms and sometimes the redhead's, occasionally Vern's and the old guy, not to mention the other artistic guy with the ponytail.

Re: Trading Spaces

Can you imagine what the walls will look like once they pull the flowers out..........staple city. Their bathroom was to die for in the first place. I couldn't understand why they wanted it redone..............42

Re: Trading Spaces

It was a nice bathroom but a bit bland, I think they wanted more color and to make it cozier because of its size. If they had pulled down the wall paper and painted the walls and put up a different shower curtain and painted the cabinets they could have given it a nice look -- the flowers didn't even match the taupe colored tiles!!

I would have found some kind of small amoire style cabinet to fill the large space, some nice towels and mats.

In the opening interview the couple is saying things like "we'd like to maybe get some new towels" I don't think they knew what they had gotten themselves into!!

Re: Trading Spaces

Good points Steve........the worst part were the cabinets. You can always repaint, but they cut out the centers of each cabinet and replaced the hole with red plastic? That's a major financial repair job..........42

Re: Trading Spaces

I enjoy the show, mostly because of Paige Davis (whose married name is Paige Page), but would not ever let them do anything to my house. Some of the rooms turn out well, and some are over the top. I don't like Kia's rooms at all!!!

Re: Trading Spaces

I'd be calling a contractor as soon as they left the bathroom house.

I can't believe the family didn't like the sunburst theme. I thought it was lovely. It would've been nice to see what the rest of the house looked like to see what she does like.

Hi heyang, I thought the couple with the "greenhouse" bathroom were good sports, (on camera at least). I taped an episode today that didn't feature Paige as the hostess. It must be an old episode.............42

Re: Trading Spaces

The funniest line of that flower bathroom episode was when Hildy was talking to Paige about her plans for the room and mentioned that she had to do something with that "tacky" shower  The shower was beautiful.....high end enclosure, waterfall shower head........ and what does she do?? put up a crappy shower curtain around it!!
Tacky??? Then she cuts the center out of beautiful cabinets, paints them metallic gold, puts plastic in them (red!) and puts cheap pop up lights inside for lighting...........glad she knows the difference between elegant and tacky :rollin:
The flowers were silk.....the friend told her husband that she wouldn't want to be the one that had to dust them all. not to mention mildew from the steam. Wouldn't they go moldy after a while?

This is what I know about the show:
They do sign a contract which states they have no say in anything, what is done or who does it. They can request something not be touched (fireplace) but it is not binding. The designers have the option of complying with the don't touch request or not. If there is something of value that the homeowners don't want touch i.e. an antique piece of furniture, it is suggested that it be removed from the house cause some pieces are scouted in other rooms as well.....the whole house is fair game.
I have heard that the crew does help out with painting or other things if needed. The paint jobs are always bad cause they are rushed. The furniture is usually really bad looking cause it is made out of cheap plywood, which looks ok on camera. (you ever seen a cabinet built with plywood and stained? its pretty bad)
Sometimes if the time runs out, they use things like duct tape to fasten cabinet doors on just so it looks finished on tv.

I applied to be on the show (I would never let them in my home..I applied with a neighbour at the lake to do our cottages) but they don't come to Canada as yet......they hope to in the future. (so they told me in an e-mail)

They are doing a live reveal on January 18th. Should be
good 8o

Re: Trading Spaces

Oh yeah.............

Did anyone see the show that had the "grave yard" bed??

Kia made a bedspread out of astroturf and covered it in flowers :rollin:

Then built a little fence around it!! :rollin:

Proud-

Yes, I saw it. I could not BELIEVE she used AstroTurf for a coverlet! What?????????

Also, did you see Kia's botch job on the military couples house? You know, the one where they said "No Army", so Kia does just that - a grey camoflauge [sp?] theme!!

How about when Doug put two halfs of a real car in the little boys bedroom?

I saw that episode with the cars........what was he thinking? There was absolutely no room for that kid to move around, and those cars were bolted to the walls......what a mess. Mary, you were adventerous signing up for the show.....42
