No it's not a joke! After thirty years in the Greater Vancouver Zoo, Tina the Elephant is being shipped today to an Elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. She will be in paradise. It's quite the feat getting her on the truck for the trip!

Goodbye Tina! Children (and adults) will miss you.

Vancouver says goodbye to Tina the Elephant

The Spirit of Vancouver bids a fond farewell, with wishes for health and happiness, to Tina the Elephant. After spending 30 years at the Greater Vancouver Zoo, Tina is on her way to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

On Friday, May 30, the final decision was made with Carol Buckley, the Sanctuary’s co-founder and executive director, in attendance along with officials of the Greater Vancouver Zoo. It is expected that Tina will be moved to the Sanctuary by the end of June.

During her 30-year tenure in the Vancouver area, Tina has kept a busy schedule, appearing in parades at the PNE and in Aldergrove, Langley and Abbotsford. In December 1979, Tina played reindeer to Santa Claus at the Pacific Centre Mall. In April 1986, Tina spent an exciting day at Expo 86 intriguing the vast crowd in attendance.

When not the primary attraction at local functions, Tina has been the well-loved resident at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. She has also had a few vacations in this time: Two "romantic" getaways to the African Lion Safari and Game Farm, in Cambridge, Ontario, and a relaxing 10-day holiday at a care facility in Yarrow, BC.

As well-loved as Tina is, her stay at the zoo could not go on. With age and continued health problems, alternate accommodations had to be found if Tina was to experience a comfortable old age. With the decision Friday, she is assured a retirement worthy of a grand dame of her stature.

Tina will be sorely missed and things will not quite be the same at the zoo for some time. But the knowledge that she is in a sanctuary with others of her kind should set our empty hearts ablaze with good will. Be sure to visit Tina at the zoo before she leaves to wish her well and adieu.

I didn't know we had an elephant sanctuary in TN. Do they let people come in and tour? That could be an interesting trip for the nieces.

mpal2:

No, it's not open to the public. It's a sanctuary for Elephants to run free. It's a wonderful place for Tina. She was miserable where she was. CTV is monitoring her journey on the news. She arrived today, safe and sound. You can access the sanctuary on the Web.
