Dead last and eased at the wire. Desormeaux said BB didn't feel right underneath him.

Longshot Da'Tara wins.

The only human connection with BB who showed any class at all was the jockey who had the sense to ease the horse up rather than risk serious injury. I know it wasn't BB's fault, but I couldn't root for a horse owned by people who viewed horses as a hedge fund (and have securities convictions in their past) and a trainer with doping infractions who was an arrogant SOB to boot.
At least BB gets to look forward to life as a stud, passing along those porcelain feet to future generations of TBs.:frown2:

I always feel so nervous when the horses run. They are so close to each other and I'm always holding my breath expecting one to fall and get hurt, like Barbaro and Smarty Jones. I've also heard a lot about not only the steroid use but the fact that they are forcing these young horses to do so much before their bones are fully developed--sounds a bit like young figure skaters.
I was sorry to hear Big Brown didn't win, but also glad to hear he didn't get hurt!

Ya can't "force" a 1,100 LB animal to run if he or she doesn't want to. My racehorse sure never wanted to run after one horse would pass him, and he came from very good breeding.

Starting in 2009 all steroids will be banned from racing. They already are in Indiana, which has two tracks--Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park.

Horses today make far fewer starts than horses in the 70s and
80s, as the real money is in the breeding shed and not on the track. They also have more time between races.

Track surfaces are also much safer today than 50 years ago.

Horses don't carry weights like they used to.

Smarty Jones never was never fatally hurt on the track.

Don't feel sorry for the Thoroughbreds who race. They are given the best of care. Feel sorry for the NYC carriage horse who works all day in 90+ weather, then has to walk back to his stable. Car/carriage horse accidents have been on the upswing. In one case a carriage horse was between two buses, when a bus ran right on top of the horse. Another horse walking the strets developed severe leg pain and died. His body was dumped in Central park like a piece of trash.

And don't forget the dumb backyard breeders who just HAVE to breed animals who have no business being bred. They end up at slaughter. here is a sampling from a recent auction, where the meat buyers make bids:
