Well, call me a trash lover but I genuinely like both the Teen Choice Awards outfit, except for the shoulder bow, and the rag-yarn/denim micro mini outfit in the photo Idle posted. Don't you guys remember early Madonna? She was 25 and wearing, or not wearing, stuff that had all the experts saying she was nothing but the flavor of the millisecond. Madonna also happens to be a stratospherically successful woman who really isn't exceptionally good at anything except being Madonna. Her voice started out sounding like Minnie Mouse and in fact I clearly remember reviews saying, "Forget Madonna and her Wannabes. Cyndi Lauper is the one with the voice and staying power." True, Lauper has a gorgeous voice, far superior to Madonna's. Lauper's style, though just as NY Downtown as Madonna's, had some real structure to it. But much as I loved Lauper's singing then and love it now, it is Madonna who is still raking in fans and money and still on that glorious quest to act in another decent movie besides "Desperately Seeking Susan."
And whoever talked about the clothes generally worn in Hollywood is a wonderful point. Let's see...JLo and "The Dress." L'il Kim, her flower "top" and Diana Ross "inspecting" it on the MTV Awards. Cameron Diaz and that striped thing that looked like an ice cream swirl cone. I liked Bjork's over-the-neck dead swan look just because it was so Bjork, but even I realize I'm very strange to love it. Demi Moore and the shorts under the front cut-out gown. I'm just bringing up a few memorable ones. So for Melissa "Would I be doing anything if I weren't Joan's kid? And let's not even talk about plastic surgery!" Rivers and her E! pals to laugh at Tara is pretty funny to me. At least Tara is all Tara, as far as I know.
So I love Tara's look, I love her tenacity in the face of soul-crushing adversity, as in constant hip pain by the age of 16 and still going on atg 21, and having to give up skating, which whatever one's opinion is about Tara as a skater I don't think we can doubt her passion for it and the heartbreak she feels.
Finally, how many of us could wear ruffles on our butts and look that good? Okay, I know Idle and Mathman could look that good in butt ruffles, but who else, huh?
Go Tara, and pile on that eyeshadow, girl! You're only popular with the tween/teen set for a minute so have fun with the make-up, teensy outfits, and hooker shoes while you can. When I was that age and had that kind of body, I was going out in antique slips with silk chiffon kimono jackets in shoes with heels that could have gouged somebody's eye out and I have always, ALWAYS been glad I did.

I'm all for girls having fun, I used to be one myself, but my feet are going to stay firmly planted on my soapbox for now.
My objections to the clothes Tara is wearing in the pictures we've seen has nothing to do with bows or ruffles (on her butt or any where else) or colors or "matching" tops with bottoms. It has everything to do with skin and the amount of it in view. Perhaps starting with what we see on the Hollywood and music "stars," I think a lot of us have become a little desensitized when it comes to the current trend to show as much skin as possible for no other reason than to show it. I have worked with boys/young men from the ages of 17-26 for a number of years and I can say from my own experience, they are still as sensitive as ever.
Many of these guys share the opinion that if you are over 50 and happen to be carrying a little extra weight around, you are then both deaf and neutered so they have a tendency to speak pretty freely to each other around me and since I have daughters in the 18-27 year old age range, I listen. What I hear these young men say about many of the girls who subscribe to the "more skin is better" way of dressing is *not* what I would want to hear said about any of my own girls.
What put the nail in the coffin for me was when I heard a "person" (I don't want to call him a man) say that he really liked what the girls were wearing now because it's easier to get into than "regular" clothes so the "chicks" didn't have as much time to think about what he was doing and say, "no."
I know this is not the norm and I have no intension of painting all young men with the same brush, but all it takes is one, and they don't wear signs identifying themselves.
I really believe you can dress "young," dress "for fun," and show off a figure you are proud of without exposing 80% or more of your skin. Just my opinion.

Some do, most not. It seems as though most up and comers wear more skin than clothes to get noticed. Once they are famous, the clothes return and they dress more classy. Remember how Jennifer Aniston used to dress? Yikes! I was embarrassed to see her. She had the great body, but she kept wearing shirts that showed her nipples and barely there skirts. I think tara is very pretty, and dresses good most of the time, her outfits are not that bad, I hope she can still skate.

I am not a Tara fan but this outfit was cute and totally appropriate for her age and the event IMO. Would have looked better with some strappy lower heeled sandals maybe. My thirteen year old neice adds "Those thingies all over her skirt look like the thingies that Granny used to put on the end tables" (I think she means doilies LOL).The VMAs are on MTV right now...LOTS of bad outfits there.

I forgot to add that I think the amount of skin showing in these particular outifts worn by Tara is just fine. Aside from the fact that the Teen Choice Awards are held in SoCal, in August, (okay, they have air conditioning inside, lol), I find the skin part of Tara's outfit both beautiful and appropriate for the event. People who don't like it are of course entitled to their opinion; however, when it comes to Melissa Rivers' and the E! crew's criticisms of Tara's "too much skin," I find it hypocritical given how in previous years the E! Fashion Police have gushed over dresses with necklines that were so low they had to be held in place with skin glue -- and those are dresses aside from JLo's "The Dress" decolletage that had to be glued down just medially to her nipples to keep things rated PG. BTW, I have nothing against JLo's "The Dress." It's the double standard I object to. I feel like I'm hearing Boris Karloff in "Frankenstein" saying, "JLo b**bies gooood! Tara belly baaaad!"
Anyway, this is hardly the first and I doubt it will be the last decade when skin is in. Whoa, baby, those ankles in 1910! Editorials abounded saying men would no longer be able to control themselves. Just kidding. Of course there's a huge difference between skirts above stocking covered ankles and an outfit consisting of three fig leaves. I'm not a mom, but I am an aunt to teenage girls and I certainly respect Lucy's opinion and concerns. However, I don't think what a teenage girl or young woman wears should be dictated by the sexual intentions of men. In the late '60s and early '70s when my friends and I were wearing "tube tops" and "hip huggers," as we called them then instead of "belly shirts" and "low riders," we were finding a way to rebel, drive our parents crazy, and discover the power of our sexuality. Of course in finding the positive and pleasurable aspects of that sexual power we also discovered the negative and disempowering side of it. But IMO, it's the way of the world and the way of growing up, at least for some girls.
In any case, I think Tara looks lovely in these outfits, skin and all. And hey Piel! You know, I think your niece might be on to something with the doily idea. My grandmother crocheted a ton of those things and really, they're quite beautiful. I think a skirt made out of layered rows of crocheted lace patterns would look very cool!
And I'm so hoping the FBI gets off Mathman's back -- or should I say butt? A photo of Mathman in a ruffled skirt, now that would be a candidate for GS post of the year!

However, I think the real criticism of Tara's outfit lies in the fact that some of us prefer dignified apparrel as opposed to the "trampy" look of some Hollywood people. The comments about Tara's fashion sense, are more a statement of disappointment, at least for me.
However, Tara has shown a real interest in becoming an actress and less in her figuerskating career and apparently prefers to become part of that Hollywood scene. Considering that, then she is appropriately dressed to fit in with the rest of them.

I think Tara wants more than anything to be skating. Unfortunately, I think her chronic hip injury has forced her to focus on another career.

I am not a huge fan, but I am a casual fan of TL as a skater...
I think she is a pretty good actress.. I hate soaps, but I caught her a few times on Y&R and thought the women passed with A+ in acting.. She was completely natural and at ease.. I can see her making it if she takes her time, and takes on the right parts..
The oufit she wore.. Well, for her tiny shape it's not flattering to me, but it's not the ugliest thing on earth either.. Just my opinion on the non flattering..

Couldn't care less about Tara or her clothes and I've never been a fan. The thing that bothers me is that it seems like there is a pattern here in that skating is never enough for the athletes.
Gold medal winning, Olympic champion skaters - and it seems that all they want to do is be known for something else. Tara, Pasha...a few others, I can't remember who right now - want to be actors. Sarah wants to be an academic. On and on. Why isn't it ever enough for them to just be skaters? For Pete's sake, most people would be overjoyed to reach the highest pinnacle of their careers and be able to enjoy the knowledge that, at least for a little while, they are the best. But, it never seems to be enough for the skaters. You don't see movie stars running around wanting to suddenly be skaters, or lawyers, or doctors, or who knows what else. You don't see singers suddenly deciding to change careers and become business execs. Why is it that skaters always want to be known for being more than "just" skaters? Why isn't it enough for them to be adored and loved by the fans and to have the medals and trophies that show their worth?
Case in point: Sarah Hughes. All she did the year after winning the gold medal is complain about skating and talk about going away to school and put on weight and skate miserably.
Tara Lipinski: She buggered out of the eligible world just as fast as she could - and has been babbling about being an actress forever.
What is wrong w/these people? Some of us would do anything to just for one moment experience the success they have had - and it isn't enough for them. Strange.

Tara went to a movie premire one day. When interviewed about it later she talked about how much she liked the red carpet and having her picture taken. Nothing about the movie, or the acting in it, or what she wants out of acting. Well, perhaps she answered what she wanted out of acting when she spoke of loving the red carpet and having her picture taken.
All we really know about Tara the skater, is that ever since she was a wee bit, she wanted to stand on top of a tupperware bowl and have everyone look at her. As soon as she got her tupperware bowl, she left eligable skating.
To be fair, she was injured big time.
But she did skate in show after show injured, even when she was told not to. Love of skating, or love of the spot light, the applause?

Tara is hardly my favorite skater. As to clothes, I agree with the poster who said she is trying to be grown up. She'll never, imo, look like Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly. That said, she wants to be a Britany or Christina teen age romp. Triple combos are not going to get that. Maybe voice lessons?
As to movie stardom, there is considerable competition in getting a role that's open to the best in hollywood. She is not even in hollywood. Maybe a small part in a teen horror film where she gets killed early on by the creep. Don't laugh. It's a credit on her acting resume.
