I'll remember that "pinky toe" tip for back spins! I'm also still working on those!

I actually tried this pinky toe technique the other day on a clean patch of ice. I got at least 5 revolutions instead of the usual 1! Of course, by then I had to get off the ice, but I'll try it again tomorrow and see if it was just a fluke.

The idea is that the backspin takes place mainly on the
outside edge, and thus by pressing down on the pinky
toe of your skating foot, you would be putting more
pressure on the correct edge.

Yes, all well and good, but much too simplistic. A
good backspin is dependent on proper body position.
You can press on your pinky toe all you like, but if
your upper body is bent at the waist and your
shoulders are hindering the direction of your spin,
tough luck!

I love the backspin. I also had to do it about a
zillion times. You can enter it from a HELD inside
edge, or you can do it right from the toe pick in a
cross foot position (which I found helpful for jumps).
You really just have to work it to death. I had a
backspin about six months into my skating. I had a
good looking backspin about six years into my
skating:laugh:

One other thing. I found that doing the back sit
spin from a forward sit spin really helped me to
find the correct spot on the blade. You just have
to commit to the spinning side.

Good luck.
