Looks like C/Z and R/G will duke it out for gold, with bronze likely going to the Italians. But 4th-6th place should be pretty fluid among the two Canadian teams and the 2nd US team.

But the difference between lst and 6th place is less than 4 points. I still think it's anyone's chance to win.

Based on previous performances, I don't think it's a wide-open race for gold. 2 points is a huge lead in the CD. Both R/G and C/Z made it to the JGPF last season, and I expect their OD scores to push them even farther ahead of the pack.

As I thought, C/Z and R/G have pulled away from therest of the field. R/G must have fallen in the OD, giving C/Z a bigger lead.

You're right , Chukm about the top two. They should have no problem for gold and silver in whatever order. The next three, through could be bronze.

I think the bronze will go to either the Italians or the Canadians. Cannuscio / Lorello are 3 points behind H/G, and that may be too much of a gap to bridge.

It just finished. Chock & Zuerlin won, but the real story is in the deductions: it seems six of the top eight fell down!

All the deductions were from the extended lifts, except the fall in Russian team, Riazanova/Guerreiro. There're more teams with extended lifts than any competitions!! I wonder if their stopwatch was accurate :)

Actually only 2 teams in the entire field ( Ekaterina RIAZANOVA / Jonathan GUERREIRO and Lora SEMOVA / Dimitar LICHEV ) actually fell in the free dance.

The other teams got deductions for lifts that lasted too long. Some got multiple deductions for that.

Lifts that last too long is a very common deduction in ice dance. You will see that a lot of these couples will adjust the lifts slightly so they don't suffer these deductions again.

I would say Canuscio/Lorello made a statement! Less than 1 point behind 3rd place even at 5th place. They were not supposed to be in the mix at all.

Nice for the others and look forward to more from them. No one yet has a hold on being in the Finals.

Hope we get some youtubes on this.

Are they a new team? I hadn't even heard of them before this. But even so, great for them!

Guess you missed the post in Dance preview thread in which dorispulaski was "mildly optimistic" about Cannuscio/Lorello's chances :p:

Cannuscio/Lorello finished 4th in their first of two JGPs last season and were 9th in Junior at 2008 U.S. Nationals. They teamed up in March 2006 -- here's the link to their official site: http://www.ice-dance.com/cannuscio-lorello/index.html

Joe it's pretty clear from the lineup at Mexico City next week that Ralph/Hill are very likely to punch their ticket there for the JGPF.

Here are the top scorers thus far:
157.84 Shibutanis
156.52 Chock / Zuerlein
149.42 Riazanova / Guerreiro
146.84 Ralph / Hill
142.01 Alessandrini / Vaturi
141.01 Harvey / Gagnon

Last season, all the teams who scored 150s or better made it into the final. There were some teams who were scoring 160s and 170s, but they all moved up to the GP this year.

Other teams who scored in the 150s last season were the Hubbells (USA), Monko/Khaliavin (RUS) and Agafonova/Dun (UKR).

I'd say the Shibutanis and Chock/Zuerlein are off to a very good start. Riazanova / Guerreiro should do better when they don't fall in both OD and FD.

I think it's high likely that these three US teams; Shibutanis, Mady/Greg and Hubbells will be at the JGF.:

Agree, Samba. Also: Ralph/Hill, Riazanova/Guerreiro, and possibly Monko/Khaliavin. That makes 6.

The remaining two spots will likely be up for grabs among Agafonova/Dun (7th at JW), Alessandrini/Vaturi and Mysliveckova/Novak (provided M/N have a much better outing at JGP CZE and do-not-fall)

You know chuckm, I just keep thinking it's the Sr. GP and not more than 6 skaters or teams can be in that group. also I was thinking there are several more contests, so no firm predictons by me yet.
