Does anyone know where we can find out which elements the men performed and/or review of their performances?

Yes Lynn,

There are a few regular posters from FSU at the event. They have promised to post there each evening when they return home.

I heard that Scott Smith landed a 4S2T combo and a clean 3A. Nicholas Young did a 3F3T, and two-footed his 3A. Since Young is in first by a wide margin and Smith in 2nd, I guess it isn't true that a 3/3 counts less than a 4/2.

I find it interesting that Kulikova and Novikov, who have been advertised by TT as the next big thing (she lobbied unsuccessfully to have them sent to the 2003 Worlds as the 3d team) are sitting in 5th... Of course, it is only their first season together, though.

I for one am going to have a hard time reading and understanding this new scoring system.

Are they going to have ordinals or is this it?

No ladybug. Ordinals are used to compare one skater to the other skaters. It is a ranking system. In that system, the marks, for example 5.6, didn't really mean anything (well, they did, but not to the outcome of the event) until compared to what the judge gave the other skaters, which is where ordinals came into play. This system, COP, or Code of Points, awards skaters points based on the successful execution of elements in their program. The skater with the highest points wins. Points from the short program are carried over to the long program.

Interesting to note the callers for the events. Alexei Urmanov is the caller for the men, and Bruno Marcotte is the caller for pairs. Nice to see former well known skaters in that roll.

Like the men's event, there is a BIG point gap between 1st and 2nd. Jennifer must have really turned it on, as only she can do! I just loved her at Nationals Pairs competition. She has a megawatt smile.

Men's final results

Evidently Scott Smith won the FS by about 7 points, but this wasn't enough to overcome the lead Nick Young had after the SP. So 2nd in SP and 1st in FS = silver. Under factored placements, would have been gold.

I'm glad that Jenny skated well -- but the "big gap" is only 2.5 points, unlike for the men's SP which was more than 8, and which proved to be an insurmountable lead. Since Scott Smith won the FS by 7 points, it is quite possible for the ladies FS to make a difference. Not saying it will happen or that I want it to -- but there is a big difference between being 2.5 points behind the leader or being 8 points back.

According to the final total, if you subtract the SP points from the final total, you get the FS points.

But doing that, it looks as if LaRoche was 2nd in the FS, not Young.

Smith: final total 181.40, less SP 60.82 = 120.58 FS
LaRoche: final total 172.14, less SP 58.01 = 114.13 FS
Young: final total 183.13, less SP 69.02 = 114.11 FS

It doesn't change the results, but it might be important to LaRoche.

Since the COP was used and these are the results. I would be interested in what the views of the fans who attended the actual competition.

Also what exactly does the Caller do for the spectators attending?
Does he announce anything to the Public? How does he reach the judges for his imput? What procedures does the Caller take in these competitions?

Interesting that Urmanov was the Caller.

I doubt very much that the caller has any contact or interaction with the audience.

There is a discussion of today's Ladies results on the USFSA board which mentions that the caller in that competition (Katarina Kamberska) said Amber Corwin's triple flip was cheated, and counted it as an overrotated double flip, costing Amber a bunch of points.

The caller does nothing for the spectators. He is part of the officials panel. He is the tech specialist for the judges.

Very, very interesting. This is very exciting actually. After all those years of having skaters with poor technical skills, specifically cheated jumps, incorrect edges, still being rewarded just because they didn't actually go down.

No comment on Corwin, since I haven't yet personally seen or heard from anyone who was there.

I can't wait to see how this plays out in the bigger competitions.

Wow! Talk about a jump in placements between CDs and ODs. And I withdraw my previous comment about Kulikova & Novikov. Can't wait to see them in person, though.
