Hmmm...It looks like Italy might have another rising rising star in Stefania Berton. Too bad for Angela Maxwell. Must have had an off day

Hmmm...It looks like Italy might have another rising rising star in Stefania Berton.

Stefania won two medals in the 2006-2007 JGP, a bronze and a silver. She made the JGPF and was 6th; she was 10th at '07 JW. Last season was a bit of a disappointment for her: she was 7th and 6th in her two JGP events and 13th at '08 JW. This season she was 4th in her first JGP event with 72.62 in the FS and 42.19 in the SP. A gold at Ostrava would buy her a ticket to the JGPF; a silver or bronze would put her on the bubble.

Stefania turned 18 in July; she has one more year of Junior eligibility.

I remember Stefania from last years JGPs. She looked good and see how much a year can do for improvements. Good luck to her in theLP.

I wouldn't rule out Angela winning just yet. She got the highest PCS and her jumps last season were among the biggest. Still, perhaps the lack of competition has hurt her. I couldn't find anything about Angela since she withdrew from Skate Detroit due to a slight injury.

Yukiko Fujisawa has a good score despite getting a deduction. If she had a fall, that score is scary. She's the four feet seven-and-a-half inch tall thirteen year old who skated very strong novice-junior programs at Skate Copenhagen.

I heard that Angela Maxwell's deduction was for a time violation and she reportedly only did a 1T at the end of her combo and doubled her lutz. Secundy may have popped her lutz.

As far as I know, Maxwell has competed only once this summer (Skate Milwaukee in the first half of July), though she scored well there (51 for SP, 94 for FS). In her Skate Milwaukee SP, Maxwell reportedly landed 2A, 3T-3T and attempted 3Z (but there may have been some kind of error on the landing). I believe she landed 5 triples through flip in her FS (3F is a new jump in her repertoire this season). She withdrew from Skate Detroit in late July due to injury but should be recovered by now.

Marissa Secundy has scored between 38-42 points in her short programs in summer competitions for which I have results (her planned jumps have been 3Lo-2Lo and 3Lz). Secundy's free skates have averaged around 72-74 points this summer, and she attempts 4 different triples in her programs -- lutz, loop, sal and toe.

Go Berton!

She needs to make her mark to give Italy a chance to win the ISU Team Championship next spring. :)

Berton has great style and is a real performer. She has a lovely 'signature' back camel spin in sort of a half Beillman position. Hopefully her jumps come through for her.

Another Canadian with a shot at a medal. Finally some Japanese ladies with a shot at the podium... JGP thus far has got to be frustrating for Japanese federation given how deep their bench is.
