I'm sad for Ishikawa-3rd in both sections, but no medal. And worrying for Berton, who now has been 4th & 3rd in two events--will she miss the GPF? I hope not!.

I'm delighted for Angela Maxwell and Yukiko Fujisawa!
These two have by far the best LP scores all year. First two ladies to crack 90 points.


Count me as another who feels bad for Shoko Ishikawa. She had a rough deal. Hopefully she can win silver or gold at her next event and qualify for the final.

Berton was 4th in her first event in Courchevel, so she has 20 points. She probably isn't going to make the JGPF.

Who will replace Secundy at John Curry Memorial in Sheffield? Maybe Tenile Victorsen?

Need some info: Why was Secundy zapped from a second assignment. She did 9th in SP and 5th in LP to finish 6th overall - 1 pt behind Berton in the LP?

Were there some rules about what a skater had to achieve in their first event to qualify for a second? Or is it just up to US Figure Skating and there are no real rules?

I think it's just a USFSA rule -- if my memory serves me right, last year, Elladj Baldé (current Canadian Junior Champion) was 14th and 7th in his assignments, and in that order, so Skate Canada must not have the same rules as in the U.S. Then again, maybe there just weren't enough skaters to choose from...

2006 US Nationals novice medalists and what they did in the JGP
1 Rhiana Brammeier 138.23 => didn't get a JGP assignment
2 Blake Rosenthal 127.16 => 7th in the JGP Taiwan, no 2nd assignment and it was too late to get a 2nd assignment anyways
3 Brittney Rizo 124.27 => didn't get a JGP assignment
4 Michaelee Scarincio 121.30 => didn't get a JGP assignment

That is true. The rules for Pairs and Dance are a lot looser.

Canada has its own rules. They used to follow '4th or better or no second event', but that has fallen by the wayside, because what was happening was Canada wasn't filling all its slots.

Thanks for the history lesson, ChrisH, but Novice Scores at Nationals are NOT relevant to JGP assignments. Usually, only the Novice champion is guaranteed a JGP event. If one recent champion didn't get an event, it may have had something to do with the lack of progress after Nationals. In the case of Musademba, she had been Intermediate champion the year before she finished 2nd in Novices, and she had an outstanding record in her summer competitions. The USFS saw her as an exceptional talent, and that's why she got JGP assignments.

That's over-stated. Novice scores along with a myriad of other things, have relevance. Yukiko's score and not her 1st place at Skate Copenhagen (in March) was one of the biggest indicators of her potential success in Ostrava. Marisa also placed 1st in an event in March (AEGON Cup) but with a score that was 33 points less than Yukiko. The ISU certainly doesn't ignore scores. Seasons best scores are used to gain entry into GP events and scores are used as tiebreakers in qualifying for the JGPF and the GPF. You need to look at both placings and scores.

Right, several things with Nationals placings and scores being the most important, went into the evaluation of Kristine's talent. Angela placed 3rd in her 1st assignment last year but got a low score (she had 4 falls) which must have played a part in her not getting a 2nd assignment.

The 2nd place for Angela Maxwell is good but the protocol shows that the FS was not ideal.

After a perfect 3T-3T combination (apparently the best in the season with 9,75 points!) she showed only 2F, 2Lz and 1F in the middle of the program and lost many points.

Only the top 2 of the 3 U.S. singles skaters that placed in the top 4 in Lake Placid were guaranteed a 2nd JGP -- the skaters were informed of this beforehand.

But Angela also had the highest PCS score in the competition. Angela is a wonderful performer and displays a lot of personality in her skating, to a degree unusual in a Junior skater. Incidentally, Angela's bubbly on-ice personality was also the reason why she won the bronze medal at Lake Placid last year even with 3 falls in her FS.

Also, Angela appeared to have a good skake. No falls!

3F is a new jump in her repertoire this season and, as far as I know, she has yet to land a clean 3Lz in competition (the 2Lz may have been planned since she received several +1 for it). All in all, a respectable free skate for Angela, especially considering she hasn't competed in over 2 months and was off the ice for a little while due to injury.
