ICE DANCE

I expect to see the Hubbells win this, their second event, and to see Gilles & Donohue win the silver medal, and Antipova and Kudashev and Ksenia MONKO / Kirill KHALIAVIN RUS should be in tight competition for the bronze. After that, it's anyone's guess, as the remaining pairs have not posted scores in the same league as those four teams.

The Starlight Waltz will be the compulsory dance in South Africa.

I'd love to see the Hubbells win gold and Gilles/Donohue win silver. On paper, that should be the outcome. But I'm somewhat worried about the judging panel (yes, again!).

There are only 7 judges on the panel. Among them are Yuri Balkov, the judge who got suspended for cheating in the past, plus a Russian judge. And the Technical Controller is Alla Shekovtseva, the wife of Valentin Piseev, head of the Russian federation. The RFSF will want Antipova/Kudashev on the podium at least in silver medal position to ensure that they make the JGPF.

H/H and G/D can't make any mistakes!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some additional info for the Canadian team:

125.62 27.76 38.63 59.23 Quebec Championships, De B-B/Buron CAN
35.57 OD, 54.17 FD LPIDC, De B-B/Buron CAN

That group you mentioned has figured out how to make H&H look good but not good enough to beat the Russian team. Mark me. This a case to look at the protocols.

It's silver for the Hubbels.

It's not the Hubbells I'm worried about---I don't see the Russian teams improving by 20 and 25 points in just 3 weeks. I think Gilles/Donohue is the target in this competition, despite the fact that in CZE they beat Antipova/Kudashev by almost 10 points, and Monko Khaliavin by almost 16 points. There might be a drive to place G/D behind both Russian teams and knock them out of the final.

That's why G/D cannot afford to make even a tiny mistake.

and again we will not mention that Monko Khaliavin in the last competition had a fall and one of they lifts called illegal
And that Antipova/Kudashev had a better base value mark both in od and fd then Gilles/Donohue.and in fact a better technical mark in the od

Base mark will only take you so far. Execution matters, too.

Anyone know when we might be able to start expecting some results?

That depends on where you are located. Central Europe and Capetown are in the same time zone.

The US Eastern time zone is 6 hours behind. These are the approximate times the results will be available in the Eastern US:

On Thursday:
CD results around 9 am
Ladies SP results, around 2 pm
OD results, sometime between 3:30 and 4 pm

On Friday:
Men's SP results around 9:30 am
Ladies FS results around 2:30 pm
FD results after 4:30 pm

On Saturday:
Men's FS after 7:30 am

chuckm, Actually that is about as decent looking a panel of judges as you're likely to get.

Referee Mr. Allan BOEHM ISU

Technical Controller Ms. Alla SHEKHOVTSEVA ISU
Technical Specialist Ms. Marika HUMPHREYS-BARANOVA ISU
Assistant Technical Specialist Mr. Roberto PELIZZOLA ISU

Judge No.1 Mr. John MILLIER USA
Judge No.2 Ms. Janice HUNTER CAN
Judge No.3 Ms. Mayumi KATO JPN
Judge No.4 Mr. Allan BOEHM SVK
Judge No.5 Ms. Kerstin KIMMINUS GER
Judge No.6 Ms. Svetlana KANDIBA RUS
Judge No.7 Mr. Yury BALKOV UKR

Data Operator Mr. Roumen JORDANOV ISU
Replay Operator Ms. Lisa JELINEK ISU

The biggest concern would be Mrs. Piseev as the technical controller. I have always felt she had too big of a conflict of interest to be in any judging capacity.

However, the performance of the tech controller the easiest thing to check, since all you have to do is compare levels from previous events to Cape Town.

And the tech specialist & the assistant tech specialist get to object if Mrs. Piseev might make a ruling that wasn't on the up and up.

Balkov - Didn't he move from Russia to Israel and now Ukraine? He shouldn't be judging. Let's spot him in the protocols if we can.

You can spot all the judges by their numbers. Balkov is #7.

Doris, it's not that the panel is bad, it's that it's so small, and there's no throwing out high and low. If UKR and RUS give high GOE and PCS scores to their teams and lowball G/D, you will get a result like the CD---with G/D behind the two Russian teams. It's amazing how much the two UKR teams have improved since their last CD: G/K from 21.09 to 26.03, and J/L from 20.94 to 25.32.

Levels change ALL the time. That doesn't necessarily mean the TC is finagling.

And it is the TC who does the objecting, and only if there is a disagreement between the TS and the ATS.

Since the TC is Mrs. Piseev, and the TS and ATS depend on the ISU technical committee for their employment, the callers aren't going to be inclined to rock any boats.

Good, but yes I noticed the 'improvement' of the Ukrainians. It is still very close between second and fourth, however.

Thanks chuckm! I was using the world time on my phone to try and figure out what might be a reasonable time to expect results but I got too tired to care lol.
Thanks again.
