Amanda Dobbs Abbotts herself up all the way from twelve place to the podium!:bow: Has anyone ever done that before? And Diane Szmiett's in the JGPF, as are the two American girls.

Gilles had by far the most ambitious program, especially compared to Dobbes and Hecken. But she lost some points for a fall on her triple flip and for popping her loop into a single.

Ishikawa had numerous mistakes, including two downgrades and two “!” calls on her two flip attempts. She did not get positive GOE on any jump element.

One line of judges scores kind of stood out. One of her jumping passes was scored as 1S+1T. Nine of the judges gave her a 0 GOE, and one gave a –3. Maybe she almost fell and one judge thought she did.

I wish that Shoko skated better and that Alexe and Amanda wrestled the lead out of her control.

Diane Szmiett got personal bests in Courchevel and in Cape Town. This is her 3rd year in the JGP. http://www.isufs.org/bios/isufs00007793.htm

While there wasn't brilliance in this competition, there was good depth. Even Rumi's 10th place score is higher than the 3rd place scores at Merano and Mexico City and the 4th place scores at Courchevel and Gomel.

Given that Gilles, Szmiett, and Ishikawa have the harder jumps and jump elements compose 3/8 of the SP vs. 7/11 of the LP, it's interesting that they won the SP, lost the LP, and won the overall.

Hecken was cleaner than the others, but still had the lowest PCS. With more favorable judging, she could've easily made the JGP final.

Hecken was cleaner than the others, but still had the lowest PCS. With more favorable judging, she could've easily made the JGP final.

Hecken's FS was nearly clean, but she got -GOE on her 3T/3T combo in the SP. Her spins aren't up to par: both spins in the SP were only L1 and her footwork L1 as well; in the FS, her spins were L1, L2 and L3. Her only triples were the 3S and 3T. In the FS, she did three 2As (the max), and she had FIVE 2Ts! Her FS was cautious and was clearly intended to help Sarah skate cleanly. But Sarah isn't a well-rounded skater technically at this point. She can certainly jump, but her non-jump elements aren't as well-developed. The other top ladies all had L3 and L4 spins and they had a greater variety of jumps, even those who didn't have more triples.

Sarah is young (she turned 15 in August) but she is quite tall (about 5'6") so she appears to be older than she actually is, and the judges may be expecting a more polished performance from her.

I don't know if you've seen Sarah skate, but her presentation skills aren't well developed, probably because she's young; she tends to focus on the jumps to the exclusion of all else. Her spin positions aren't pleasing to the eye, and she sometimes stoops a little, maybe because she's not quite comfortable with her height as yet.

Sarah ranked 7th in PCS in both SP and FS. Even the German judge had her PCS scores no higher than 4th. Another panel of judges would probably score her about the same way.

Sarah is a very talented girl and if she works on her weaker areas, she could be a medal contender in the future. But she's not quite there yet.

If we get YouTubes, we could say whether Sarah Hecken deserved more favorable judging or not. As for her being ...
... a medal contender in the future. But she's not quite there yet.
She won a JGP gold medal last year. Sarah has been more consistent this year, but like Amanda Dobbs, she hasn't increased the difficulty of her programs. That's why Sarah is unlikely to make the final.
