Shrinking judges panels aimed at cutting costs

The International Skating Union reduced the number of judges on panels for major championships as an emergency measure for local organizing committees, said David Dore, the former head of the Canadian Figure Skating Association, now called Skate Canada.

Looks like the declining economy around the world is taking a toll on the ISU :no:

It has gotten so bad that the Czech Republic can no longer host the 2009 World Junior Championships and that only 5 judges will decide the winners at the 2009 World Championships in LA :(

One of the true unaddressed costs in all of those would seem to be the fact that in many instances, there are judges who travel to an event... only to not actually get to judge the event because they do not survive the draw. I think something like roughly a third of judges end up incurring the expense ... but don't end up getting to provide their services.... Not that they serve NO other role in being there, but it would seem this should be factored into the bigger cost savings picture...rather than just chopping the number of judges
