In the days before there was much on the internet than about how to fix, use and maintain your computer, we used to go to competitions without even knowing for sure which skaters would be skating. I'd buy a program and so often it would not tell me what I wanted to know about the skaters. Usually it would give their standings in some of their most recent competitions but not much else. I'd run out early every morning to get to the newspaper vending machine to buy a paper and avidly read the background pieces that the local reporters had done. And I'd borrow the old copies of Skating magazine that a skate fan friend of mine would bring for me.

You all know most of these skaters in the Grand Prix events, so I've tried to reproduce for you what I really would have loved to see in those old programs, newspapers and magazines. I've given you the typical bio that I did for the Juniors, but I've curtailed the competitive history of more familiar skaters to the last 2 years or so. And I've added a lot of links to videos and articles. The more well known the skaters, the more obscure I've tried to keep the videos.

If you have any favorite videos and articles that I've missed, I hope you post them!

I've added links to the fan websites of the competitors if you just can't get enough of a particular team.

So pull your chair up to the computer, make some popcorn and dilute some soda to simulate rink food. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing it. And if you'd want something different in a GP preview, please make suggestions!

If you're not a regular youtuber, do note on youtube, that some of the videos can be watched in higher quality and don't miss the full screen button.

The CD for Skate America will be the Viennese Waltz. Here's a reference file with videos of the great dancers of the past performing it. The Viennese hasn't been selected for the Seniors since the 1999/2000 season, so the clips are of the great dancers of the 1980's and 1990's.

IceNetwork has done a preview article to tell you about how it ranks the dancers this year:
http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081010&content_id=52831&vkey=ice_news

I'm going to list all of these great dancers as they appear, alphabetically by country. There isn't a team here at Skate America that isn't well worth watching. (Aren't you lucky if you are going!)

First up
1 Kristin FRASER / Igor LUKANIN AZE 1
They were one of the first couples where the members were from different countries. Look for them to shine in the Waltz CD. Her impressive height and extension should look stunning. I don't expect them to medal, but don't miss the CD:

Coach and Choreographer: Nikolai Morozov
Igor is 32 and was born in Ekaterinaberg, Russia. Kristin is 28 and was born on leap year day in 1980.
They train in Hackensack, NJ.
They live in Montclair, NJ.
Their last year's FD was to "Time to Say Goodbye" but they are still going strong and are entered here at Skate America
OD I have no idea and hope someone else knows
FD I have no idea and hope someone else knows

Next up, the bronze medallists at Canadian Nationals. Allie and Michael are a young team, and emphasize the whimsical in their skating. The choreo in their folk OD last year, Logdriver's Waltz & Newfoundland Jig was particularly exceptional. It was choreographed by Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe. I hope they have gone to Megan and Aaron for both dances this year. The OD rhythm this year should be a good fit for them.

2 Allie HANN-McCURDY / Michael CORENO CAN 2

Next up, the silver medallists from France (Pechalat and Bourzat did not skate at Nationals last year). They also had a very memorable OD last year, skated to a popped up version of an old Quebec folk tune renamed Degeneration. I know a number of people who liked their Chopin number better than Belbin and Agosto. They recently won the Karl SCHÄFER Memorial competition. The Viennese was competed there, so they have a leg up on some of the other teams here at Skate America. Don't miss the Golden Skate article about their specialty, their lifts, and how they collaborate with Dubreiul and Lauzon to create them.

I should have put them first, because, of course, they are not only World Champions, they have been on the skating scene so long. In researching their videos, I found their 1996 Junior World performances. In 1996, they were still doing an Original Set Pattern instead of an OD. Because their work is so familiar to everyone, the videos I chose are mostly of their exhibitions and early performances. You'll laugh perhaps, but my favorite thing of theirs was their last year's Yankee Polka with the sheriff and the saloon lady. Of course, their FD's are great too...They will be duelling with Belbin and Agosto for the win. As world champions, I expect DelSchoes to win here...except...

Fresh from their win at Finlandia, the Kerrs are in the best shape I've ever seen them at the beginning of the season. In fact, their previous poor performances on the Grand Prix have held them back, I think. Their Erin Shore OD was a season highlight for me last year. I expect them to take the bronze, and if B&A don't bring their A or B+ game, the silver.

Rubleva and Shefer skated at Skate America last year and had a very embarrassing fall when she grabbed his sash and it came off. It was very sad. They've been trying to break through for some time. Perhaps it will be this year.

Tanith and Ben have been rather struggling the last two years, and are hoping that Linichuk and Karponosov will be able to get them ready for the next Olympics. Often that seems the way it is with past Olympic medallists that hang around to see if they can win the gold in their second Olympics. I'm hoping that they really bring it this year. The Linichuk emphasis on CD's that Shpilband tended to neglect has got to help them. I've always admired their ODs, so the videos are mostly of OD's and exhibitions.

Emily and Evan just won Nebelhorn, so the Kerrs aren't the only team with a great finish in a recent competition. And the Viennese Waltz was danced there, too. They are also the reigning Junior World Champions. This is their Grand Prix debut, so be sure to clap extra hard for them. Sadly, there are not a lot of videos out there of them. These young US skaters tend to have their competition videos that don't make US television stuck on icenetwork.

Jane and Todd are a recent pairing. Chris Dean and Tom Dickson choreograph for them, so their programs are very interesting, choreographically. They finished third in their international debut at Nebelhorn, so don't go out for coffee when they're skating. And they won all their events at the Lake Placid International Ice Dance competition, which is why US Figure Skating gave them the host country third team invitation here.

Thank you BBI*CEO!

That was a great article you posted . And I definitely feel all warm and fuzzy toward Tanith & Ben for these comments.:rock:

"We really feed off of that energy," Belbin said. "Being a skating fan myself and from watching other skaters in those moments when they capture the audience, you can feel it. There's a different atmosphere when those great skaters take the ice and give that special performance. And when we connect with the audience on that level -- and it's only happened to us a very few times in our competitive career -- you can feel it and the judges feel it."

"One of the most important aspects of skating for us is the interaction we have with the audience," Agosto added. "The audience plays a really, really large role in our performance, and it's kind of give and take. The more we can give to the audience and the more that they respond, that gives us even more energy to work with.

"While we're required to perform our elements for the judges, I think for our own satisfaction we really want to perform for the fans," he said. "So we're excited to come to Everett. We've skated there a few times on Champions on Ice, and we've always had great crowds. There's a lot of knowledgeable fans in Everett, and they seem to have a great time and really enjoy the competition."

I love you for doing this!!

Though, Carron & Jost are actually French silver medalists, since Pechelat & Bourzat didn't compete at the last French Nationals.

Doris-- wow what a wonderful pre-competition guide.

It makes going into the first Senior grand prix so much more fun- especially with the links to articles for skaters that I don't know that much about.

:yes::yes:

(One quick feedback point- Carron and Jost are skating to Muse for their FD. The "clown" FD is Pechalat and Bourzat.)

Thanks for the link to the new Tanith/Ben article. This part of that article really speaks to me.

Weeks passed, in fact, and Belbin and Agosto were beginning to wonder when they would start choreographing new routines for the coming season.

"We were very, very nervous about the difference in the timing of our preparation," Belbin said. "But our coaches just said, 'Trust us, you need this. We can't just cover up your weaknesses in choreography anymore. We have to fix them.'"

It was a sobering message, but one Belbin and Agosto came to understand and appreciate.

"Without doing that," Belbin said, "we'd be just trying to get lucky like we always have. We needed to fix the problems so that we can stand on our two feet confidently on the ice, and really feel that we are the best skaters out there."

Their honesty and get-down-to-work quality has always been something that I've admired about them. I hope it pays off for them this season.

Wow! What a great preview! I do have one correction for you though. The little summaries at the end of each team's section seem to be one team off. The one for Tanith & Ben is actually at the end of the one for Rubleva & Shefer, the Evan & Emily one is at the end of Tanith & Ben's section, etc. You might want to fix that for the anal people like me who notice that sort of thing, LOL ;)

Thanks for the great preview! :)

Kwanfan1212, Please tell me explicitly what you would like to see, because I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm guessing here, but there are no summaries, there are previews, and they come before the team name, not after the fansite entry. Is that what you're asking about?

I've added lines of ++++++++++++++++as pagebreaks. I hope that makes things more clear for you.

DorisPulaski, I would like to volunteer to help with these previews for future ice dance events, so if you tell me what you need done/due dates, I'd like to help you to keep this kind of thing going!

So many skating fans are giving up on skating with minimal TV coverage (I have to admit even my interest has waned recently) and not enough collated resources, this could make it "enjoyable" again. I think with the You Tube videos and this kind of collated information, perhaps skating fans may once again feel connected to the sport they love(d).

Thank you so much for the offer, BBI*CEO

I have 2 outstanding needs:

1. Ladies' event previews. It is my least favorite event, but it is the one that most fans probably want to see. Maybe pairs as well. I always do the dance first, because it is my favorite :love: I do men's second (it's almost done).

2. Previews for events that run at the same time as the GP and the JGP-I didn't have time to do Finlandia, Karl Schaeffer or Coupe de Nice, for example. And there are the national championships later in the year. Coming soon are the NRW Trophy (dance only) in Dortmund. Also there is a dance event at Golden Spin of Zagreb and at the Nepala Memorial Event in November. I think writeups on all those might be interesting.

So tell me which kinds of things you'd like to do. If it's dance only, how about doing NRW or Nepala or Zagreb?

I will be happy to tell you how I get this stuff, but mostly it's just lots of typing into search boxes.

How about you let me know what you need done as you require, and I can PM you the research and links for you to post in your previews...for instance, if there are certain skaters/teams that you don't have time to compile in advance of a competition, let me know! PM me with your preference in how I can be of assistance!

Absolutely fabulous preview. Thank you so much for posting the annotated bibliography of the youtube links -- it was really, really helpful. I'm looking forward to seeing the CD at Skate America, and for once I feel at least a little prepared!
