The Seattle Times tells us that the skaters feel like rockstars in Washington

The Snohomish County Herald on line is crowing about the quality of the Skate America competitors. So am I.

It's time for the ladies preview. Get there early. Practice standing in line at the ladies room. Sneak your snacks in, the lines will be long at the food stands. Get your programs, your programs here!!

This is one heck of a competition.

Buy some ice cream, preferably Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream bar. The rink is hot when its crowded, and the ice cream will taste especially good. Now lets check the program and see who's here?

First up:

1 Mira LEUNG CAN 1
Mira's 21 and her birthdate is the same as mine. Skate fans always seem to talk about 4 things about Mira, her mother, her costumes, her coaching changes, and how it's Mira's fault that Hawker or Phaneuf or whomever their favorite is didn't make it to Worlds. For those who think Mira's skating has not improved over the years, please view her 2005 Jr. Worlds video and compare it with recent videos. Mira probably did herself no favors by skipping through novices and juniors quickly and going almost direcltly to seniors - looking at the cake before its done is not a good idea. But please clap for this determined young lady if you are at Skate America for me?

7 Yukari NAKANO JPN 6

She's 23. She gets better every year. She was totally robbed at Worlds of a bronze medal l. She has a strange leg wrap on some of her jumps. She has an awesome triple axel. And when she was very young, she looked sort of like Mira Leung. (Check out the first article on her and her oldest video)

9 Tugba KARADEMIR TUR 8
Tugba is 23. She has been the inspiration for a whole group of skaters in Turkey. It hasn't been easy. Her parents, particularly have sacrificed for her. She sometimes has a 3F, and I never have seen her land a 3Lz, but there are some very, very special things in her skating. Maybe it's Kurt Browning's choreography.

10 Rachael FLATT USA 9
She's 16. Her birthday was too late in July for her to attend World's last year. I saw her skate at Liberty again this summer and was just blown away by her Moon River SP. Ok the music is sappy. It still sent shivers down my spine. It was the best program I saw at the entire event, and that included the new programs of Patrick Chan, Alissa Czisny, Ashley Wagner and Jeremy Abbott and Ryan Bradley. Well, maybe it wasn't quite as good as Ryan :) I hope Rachael knocks them dead in Everett. It's interesting that her former coach was Suzie Semanick the ice dancer. If you look, you can see that in her skating.

11 Kimmie MEISSNER USA 9
She's just turned 19. She's a past world champion. And everyone talks like it's all over for her. Not necessarily. I can't wait to see what Richard Callaghan and Todd Eldredge have done with our Kimmie. Remember, Callaghan managed a world medal and a US championship for the notoriously hard to coach Nicole Bobek....If I had a daughter, I'd want her to grow like Kimmie-not skate like her, be like her. Kimmie is very serious about her charities, and has been even when her skating has been a struggle. I hope the only thing she's struggling with now is her hair, which she says is a real problem in Florida.

I am not a huge fan of the ladies, but even I would bestir myself to watch this competition. I can't make it this year, but I hope you all will, and will make videos, and write reports, and come back here and tell us all about it!!

I love watching Susanna's skating. Her stroking is so smoooooth. Actually most Finnish ladies have excellent basic skating skills and jump technique. Annette is also entertaining. Valentina's skating bothers me a lot, I have no idea why. Mira Leung has been a drama queen of every skating fans' board for a loooog time, I bet she will not disappoint us this time around. Yu-Na Kim is obviously the favorite, but her music this season does not sound very exciting. I'm also looking forward to seeing Mirai's senior debut. By the way, Tugba used to have some brilliant programs, but she's getting quite generic these days. We'll see ...

The rest of the field is just blah to me, nothing particularly interesting about their skating... Overall, it's an insanely tough field though.

I'm not perfectly sure but most probably:
Yuko Monna (1996-2000 and since 2006)
Nobuo Sato (2000-2005) Kumiko Sato (2000-2005)

The 2003-4 season, though abbreviated on the list, was the first peak of her brilliance, I'd say.

I really like Susanna's program for this season!
I hope she will be able to land a few more triples than at the Finlandia competition because her flow and style on the ice is just so first grade. This competition is going to be very exciting!
I missed her last season and wish her good luck this year
