The Grand Prix season is now half over, and we have seen the programs of four of the top six place teams from Worlds 2008. Faiella and Scali, who finished fifth at Worlds this year will be making their first appearance here at TEBC.

When these competitions come so close, even a fan feels like she can hardly catch her breath--especially this fan.

Imagine how hurried and harried the skaters must feel. Imagine how they worry every time they entrust their skates and costumes to the tender care of the baggage handlers. I would not be able to sleep a wink on the flight with worrying whether my equipment had been lost, if I were they.

I'd like to think that there would be significant improvement in skaters' programs between say Skate America and TEBC, but that's asking a LOT of young people suffering from jet lag, exhaustion, and stress. It's got to be very difficult to figure out why the element that your choreographer assured you was a level 4, and that the tech caller just called a level 2, and then fix it in just 2 or 3 weeks.

Things are getting harder for the skaters, but they're getting easier in the virtual program business. We've looked at over half these teams before. I could have just copied over the old entries, and yes, I did some of that. However, these things are new:

1. I have added videos and articles that were written or uploaded after the skaters events.

2. I have updated their "Best ever" scores for new personal bests achieved this fall.

3. I have added their flight plans (with levels as assigned by the caller) for their OD's and FD's, for those skaters who have competed already.

4. I have pored through the protocols to identify the highest GOE elements of each skater, based on their last event for those who have competed at Skate Canada or Skate America. So be looking for those highlights as you watch.

5. I've added some discussion at the beginning of each team's entry.

So don't assume you've seen everything that will be here!

And if there's some addition to these previews you'd like to see, please post it in the reply section.

Finally, I'm getting tired of pseudo rink food. My icenetwork connection is finally functioning correctly so that I can watch the events along with the rest of you. Icenetwork has finally satisfied itself that Groton, CT, is indeed part of the USA, and so is not blacked out. I'm ready to sit down, have a coffee and a sandwich, and watch some great skating.

How about you?

The compulsory dance at TEBC will be the paso doble. For those who would like a paso doble refresher course, here's a link:

1 Kristin FRASER / Igor LUKANIN AZE 1
TEBC will be Kristin and Igor's first and only appearance in the GP this year since they withdrew from Skate America. The reason they withdrew has not yet been clarified. However, if they were looking to avoid hot competition, TEBC was not the event to keep. Delobel & Schoenfelder and the Kerrs from Skate America will be here. And Crone & Poirier, silver medallists from Skate Canada will be competing at TEBC.

2 Vanessa CRONE / Paul POIRIER CAN 2

Vanessa and Paul are a , technically able, although very young couple. They scored all level 4's in both their FD and OD at various times last year.
I'm glad to see them be less pedestrian in their choice of music this year. Last year they had a Gypsy OD and a Tango FD. Their great FD performance at Skate Canada 2008 was a wonderful debut for them in the senior ranks.

Ice-dance.com's LPIDC report on the OD:
"Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier
This bartender and barkeep in black and white checks and hat delighted the crowd with their routine to piano music reminiscent of “The Sting.” It was fast and fun with a touch of comedy and very entertaining."
Ice-dance.com's LPIDC report on their FD:
"Vanessa Crone & Paul Poirier – "A Perfect Day" by Yo-Yo Ma
Crone & Poirier began their first full season on the senior level by performing a gentle free dance to lyrical cello music. Last year, their opening stationary lift became a trademark for them, and this year they open their program with a new stationary lift. Their twizzle sequence is ambitious, performing the first set in a sitting position and then going immediately into a catchfoot variation. Unfortunately, they lost control of the sequence at the very end. Their spin was smooth and melted into the program's choreography, but their most impressive elements were their lifts, which are overall much more dynamic than last year. With this program, Crone & Poirier made a statement that they are ready for the senior Grand Prix. "

3 Zoe BLANC / Pierre-Loup BOUQUET FRA 3

Zoe & Pierre-Loup were the 3 time junior French champions. This year, they were 4th in the French senior ranks. They seem to like to try unique styles compared to other young teams, both in their exhibitions and their competitive skating. Last year they were one of the few teams doing a Hindi folk dance. This year they are skating their free dance to a poem in French. A kind person has published a translation of the poem, subtitling their FD. There is a youtube link to it below.

4 Pernelle CARRON / Mathieu JOST FRA 3

Pernelle and Mathieu are known for their creative lifts, which they develop with the assistance of Marie-France Dubreiul and Patrice Lauzon.

Last year seemed to be a breakout year for Pernelle and Mathieu. And their win at the Karl Schaefer Memorial seemed to confirm that a podium finish in the GP was in their near future.

Their fifth place Skate America performance might seem a step back. However, they achieved their best ever CD score at Skate America this year. Sometimes teams have worked harder on one part of the competition and that shows in the early season, to the detriment of the other parts. Look for C&J to have a better performance here at home in France, if not a better placing. Unfortunately, TEBC also has a very tough competitive field, as did Skate America.

5 Isabelle DELOBEL / Olivier SCHOENFELDER FRA 3

Fresh from their win at Worlds, and their win at Skate America, nothing but a win will satisfy here for Delobel and Schoenfelder. And yet last year, they won their first gold medal after so many years of competing together. I can't say I'm crazy about their Grandpa chases the Red Cross nurse OD, but I'm really looking forward to seeing their interpretation of the Paso Doble. They always add a story and interesting starting and ending moves to their CD's. I can't wait.

6 Sinead KERR / John KERR GBR 4

This is the first year that Sinead and John have started the GP season in really tiptop form; and magically, they earned a bronze medal at Skate America and won Finlandia. Their OD is definitely one of the best choreographed we will see this season. They still have a tendency to have a problem with twizzles, as do many of the older skaters who did not grow up under COP. However, they have amazing lifts, deep edges to die for, and great power and speed. I'm hoping for a silver for them here.

Choreographers: Evgeni Platov, Robert Royston
OD-'The boogie bumper' and 'Minnie the Moocher' by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

7 Federica FAIELLA / Massimo SCALI ITA 5

Of course, the team most likely to keep Sinead and John in third place are Faiella and Scali of Italy. They finished fifth at Worlds this last year, two spots ahead of Sinead and John. Their 2008 programs can be viewed on youtube, as skated in an Italian test skate, and I have linked them below.

F&S's Follow the Fleet OD program would be a good choice except that Samuelson & Bates have chosen to use the same music-and S&B are earning the highest technical levels we have seen this year. It's never good to remind the viewers and the judges of a team that finished behind your near competitors while skating better than you are. And if Federica is still skating this routine in pants, it will be a bit jarring. In the 1940's, even on the coldest days, a girl had to wear a dress over her snow pants to go to school. Girls in pants were just not the done thing, except on safaris or on stage. I think although this a good routine, the Kerrs OD, if well skated, is a lot better. Furthermore, the Kerrs just improved their Waltz CD amazingly. The paso is not massively harder than the Viennese. I expect the Kerrs to perform equally well in it.

F&S have typically been a little weaker technically than some of the other top 10 teams, and have made up the difference with strong stroking and good musicality. However, if you have been paying attention, you have seen that the technical callers in dance have been rather stingy with levels this fall. I hope F&S have stepped up their tech content this year.

Also, I have never felt a clown program, even a Pierrot and Pierrette type program, is a good choice in dance. Certainly, clowning did no favors to Pechalat & Bourzat at Skate Canada.

In any case, Kerr/Kerr vs Faiella/Scali will be the most exciting match here at TEBC for me.

8 Joanna BUDNER / Jan MOSCICKI POL 6

Budner and Moscicki are the Polish ice dance champions, but last year they were skating the JGP. This is their first senior GP event. It's a tough place to start. Last year at worlds, they did not make the cut for the FD, due to a fall in the OD, skated to Polish folk music. They will be looking to skate clean programs and make a good debut at the senior level, more than aiming for the podium this time out.

9 Ekaterina RUBLEVA / Ivan SHEFER RUS 7

Ekaterina and Ivan have been partners since 1994. They are the current Senior
bronze medallists at the most recent Russian championships.
Ekaterina is 23 and Ivan is 25. They finished 6th at Skate America, even though they have a respectable level of technical difficulty in their programs. Frankly, they need more power and speed. All was not bleak though. They earned their highest ever CD score at Skate America.

They should try to wangle a trip to Linichuk's School of Speedy Stroking and Engine Repair!

10 Jennifer WESTER / Daniil BARANTSEV USA 8

Considering the relatively weak field at Skate Canada, Jennifer and Daniil's 7th place finish cannot have been satisfying for them. Perhaps with some more time practicing these programs, their scores will improve. There's nothing like planning a wedding, getting married, and going on a honeymoon to slow down your training regimen, but it's been 2 years now. Still, I expect that they will be skating better later in the year.

Yes, I had heard that, now that I think about it. They certainly didn't seem to be skating at the level they showed at Four Continents last year, or US Nationals for that matter.

Doris, I agree that you get all Level 4's and maximum +++GOE for this awesome compilation of info!! Thank you for providing such worthy information so I have a GOOD excuse to procrastinate stuff until TEB begins. ;) It is especially nice to read the tidbits and see some video of the dance teams I am not very (or at all) familiar with.

THANK YOU!!!!

On another thread I wrote that Skate Dance follows a certain pattern every year. There is no room for newcomers.

At TEB, it will be Del/Shu; the Kerrs; Faiella/Scali. I can not see the judges going elsewhere in Dance. The challengers: will be Fraser/Lukanin; Carron/Jost; Crone/Perrier whom I believe will not be noticed till after the Olys.

Fraser/Lukanin are hardly newcomers---they are 28 and 32 and have been together since 2001. They have already competed at two Olympics; their best finish was 11th at 2008 Worlds.
