This is a good ladies' field. Of course it is, with the Worlds' Champion Mao Asada appearing her. And a resurgent Joannie Rochette, fresh from her win at Skate Canada. And Caroline Zhang, trying to recover her amazing form after a growth spurt. Then there's the fight between the two unrelated French Didier girls, competing over France's one spot at Europeans and Worlds.

And you have the attempted comeback of Emily Hughes, one of the most entertaining female skaters. And the self-choreographed Anastasia Gimazetdinova of Uzbekistan, a skater still learning and growing and improving at age 28.

Of course all the ladies are skating like they have been nibbled to death by ducks with all the edge calls and underrotation calls. It's hard for me to get really engrossed in ladies' skating with all that going on.

But in any case, this is the last preview for TEBC before the real show starts. The CD will be starting in just a few hours. So I'm getting ready.

Enjoy!

1 Joannie ROCHETTE CAN 1

Note that all of Joannie's all time best scores occurred at Skate Canada this year! What a competition she had. I most respect Joannie for the two years' work she did reworking her lutz jump. Now it is really paying off.

6 Elene GEDEVANISHVILI GEO 5
Elene committed the penultimate skating sin. She grew tall. However, this year she seems to have adjusted to her new body and I hope she will skate very well here. She certainly had quite a solid performance at Finlandia, with a score only a couple points off her personal best. And she won Midatlantics, with a triple lutz triple toe in the SP. Don't miss her great Cabaret SP here at TEB.

BTW, the ultimate sin? Developing curves.

There are a number of Russian articles about Elene linked here
http://www.gedevanishvili.ru/english/press.php
In 2006, Elene seemed posed for success, with a fifth place finish at Europeans
http://www.geonoc.org.ge/eng/shownews.php?id=73
However, the Russians deported her mother from Moscow where Elene was training. Elene followed her back to Georgia, where training facilities are limited.
http://www.caucasus-images.com/?ID=UA2DDAD7TH
Then she developed whooping cough (BTW, this is a nice Elene website):
Elene has received the Order of Honor by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili for her achievements as an athlete and compensation for the way she had been treated in Russia.
http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Elene_Gedevanishvili
Following which, she moved to train in New Jersey, where she has remained. (per this bio)

8 Mao ASADA JPN 7

This is Mao's first GP appearance this year. Here she starts to defend her world title, leading up to the Olympics. She is the Japanese National Champ, the 4C's Champ, and the World Champ. Oddly enough, none of her personal bests
are from the World Championships she won last year. However, she has gone to Tarasova for coaching and choreography. For some, Madame Tarasova has worked wonders. For others, she is the start of the road to skating oblivion.

9 Emily HUGHES USA 8

Emily is back with her previous coach, Bonnie Retzkin. She loves Harvard and was happy with her grades. But she also loves skating. Emily is one of the few ladies' skaters who always appears to be so enjoying performing that you forget she's in a competition. Her biggest problem, other than injuries, is a tendency to underrotate.

She's using last year's SP, I Got Rhythm, which is a great one for her.

Emily is tall. How tall is Emily? I don't know, but her height is not listed on her ISU bio. That's one problem. The second is that she's had a series of injuries since early 2007, and missed Worlds, Nationals and 4CC's. She's at the very start of a comeback trail.

"It's really important for me that I am in contact with Bonni, because she is my main coach," agreed Hughes. "[This fall] she'll come visit me for a few days, and I'll go home for a few days to work with her, back and forth. It will all work out in the end."

On days in Boston when Retzkin is unavailable, Hughes will work with Elin Gardiner Schran, founder of Boston Ice Theater and daughter of 1956 Olympic champion Tenley Albright.
...

Hughes debuted a new free skate at Middle Atlantics, choreographed by David Wilson to the theme from Gone with the Wind.
...

"Bonni always wanted me to do [GWTW] and this year, she was like, "I really think you should do it," and I said no, because the only part of the music I ever heard what that part that's played over and over," explained Hughes.

"Then David found this amazing version and I couldn't turn it down. I love it now. ...

I saw David again in August for a follow-up, and I might visit him again."

12 Anastasia GIMAZETDINOVA UZB 9
Anastasia quit competing in the 2004/2005 season, but returned for 2005/2006 to compete in the Olympics, and she's still competing today. And her skating is still improving.

Anastasia choreographs her own programs. She typically does triple lutz (yes off a good edge) double toe and triple salchow in the SP. In the LP, she has 5 triples. With the crazy rules today, she might do better than you think. And she's been working on her F/w and spins. She is using the same programs as last year, so the 4CC's videos below show you what she's doing.

Coach: Peter Kiprushev; Former Coach: Igor Ksenofontov
Choreographer: Anastasia Gimazetdinova
Training Towns: Tashkent, Omsk, RUS, Pervouralsk

Thank you Doris for another comprehensive and interesting preview of a competition. By the way, if growing tall is the penultimate figure skating sin, what is the ultimate sin?

Developing curves/getting fat, obviously

Someone tell me, WHY is developing curves a bad thing?? Better than being a stick figure out there, eh- maybe except if you're a pairs skater. Obviously you don't want the latter to happen, but that's also a fine line to walk (i.e. it's defined differently be different people). I think what people mean to say is "out of shape".

Has there been many skaters that developed curves ? (as in "filled out" not necessarily gained weight)
