This morning I got in a discussion with my close friend about what college students wear. She said that they care about what other college kids are wearing (such as designer jeans, certain shoes, etc. ). I say that no one in college really cares what anyone wears because they are too busy with school. For all you college students out there what is your opinion on this. We have a $20 bet on who is right.

Well I don't care what I wear. I'm normally in jeans in a tshirt or sweatshirt...

but I've noticed I'm not in the norm. Most of the girls are in designer everything and even in the bitter cold they're dumb enough to freeze in the name of fashion.

That's UAA, though, there are equally as many who are like me (mainly male) who could care less.... Most of the journalism people I've run into go for casual comfy... but not overly sloppy (except for those who are like me and are going for a TV/Film degree lol)

To be honest, I used to care about what I looked like. I wore all brand name clothes. Now I still care, but not as much as I used to. I usually wear a plain sweatshirt (or college sweatshirt) and jeans, nothing special really.

i hardly EVER wear designer stuff, and nobody at my school really does either.
Most of the people wear jeans, tshirts, sweartshirts, that kind of thing. pretty casual!

When I was in college (8 years ago) I wore whatever I could afford and the the cheaper, the better. I worked my way through school and very rarely had money for clothes.

When I was in college 11 years ago, I only wore things I bought at Goodwill or Salvation Army. I couldn't afford to shop at "real stores," so my attire was pretty casual!

I think it depends on the area, school, and the major. When I was in college not that long ago, myself and everyone I know just wore whatever we could afford that is clean! Yup, most of people I know were so busy with school and working to pay for school, look wasn't that big of a deal. But again, I went to a very competitive school for my major.

Certainly depends on the college! I went to Mass College of Art. Yes, people there do care what they're wearing. In general, the rule was - the more freakish the better. Half the kids wore gothic-inspired things, while the other half indulged in multi-colored freakishness. Certainly nobody had any money for designer stuff! Also, I was actually at first in the fashion design program - and there, it was the uniqueness that counted, everyone trying to add a personal touch to the clothing.

I care. I think most people do. I don't think showing pride in your appearance is a bad thing at all.

i am not a college student any longer but i am still on campus for my research. a friend of mine who has just come from TX told me that he thinks it's very fashionable around here because back in TX the girls were attractive but they wore only t-shirts and sweatshirts and they had a boring lineup. you'd only see variations in colors---blue, yellow, red, white......but he now sees fashionable girls here in CA!
but i feel that i see university t-shirts and sweatshirts most often on campus perhaps because my comparison group is japanese kids. they'd never wear university t-shirts or sweatshirts on campus as everyday cloths. both girls and guys spend really a lot of money on cloths. i sometimes feel as if there's nothing but to shop in a city like tokyo.
the guy who made the above comparison is a french who always dresses in clean, tasteful shirts and wears perfume himself. i wonder if french kids wear university t-shirts and sweatshirts to go to school or they are more like him.

Too busy with school? What an optimistic opinion. ;)

I don't have designer stuff - but I love clothes and looking good in them. I don't care much about where the clothes come from, but about how good they look on me and with my other clothes. They can't be expensive of course, but they have to be of good quality and tasteful. I have a favourite brand from Spain, Mango, but it's reasonably priced and you can always wait till something is on sale. I don't care much about what's fashionable though - if I like something that's fashionable right now, I'll integrate it into my wardrobe - but that's not very often.

I love classical style combined with a bit of crazyness. Often I have everything elegant and classical - except for one crazy detail - either a funny politically incorrect T-shirt, or some surreal necklace, sometimes dramatic make-up to a pretty-princess outift ... Some of my stuff is self-made by my mum or by me, some of my clothes I change after I bought them - I'll draw some cool flower pattern on a shirt, or redesign the shoes.

Does this make me superficial? I don't judge others about their outfits (well, perhaps if everyone looks the same again because some designer decided that ugly boleros are suddenly fashionable - I might not be able to suppress a giggle). But I love feeling good, well-dressed and well-groomed - it's not for others, it's for me. And most the medstudents I know are also well-dressed and stylish, especially the guys who are often more daring than the guys in engineering, physics or computer sciences. Some of the girls are a bit more trendy than I am - but there is no judging I think. And if they wear designer stuff, what is the problem? If they can afford it, why shouldn't they buy and wear that stuff? It's not like they look down on others because of it. It's all about acceptance and individuality I think. And in my opinion it's really different from highschool where there was peer pressure (not that I cared
).

i agree that there is some variability by the major. i hang out with those in arts and humanity most often. many of the art students are fashionable in their own ways. i like those who have their own styles. one of my best friends often dyes and cuts cloths. i love going shopping with him. those in the film major also tend to be pretty fashionable.

i also feel that there's some variability by the country where you are from. if you take an average, i feel that european guys dress more nicely compared to local american guys. japanese guys also tend to be more fashionable and more girlish in their tastes, i would say. european and japanese guys seem to wear perfume more often than american guys. indian guys tend to dress cleanly.

oh, i have a german friend who always wears a clean pressed shirt and neat pants. he does not wear a tie, but i could very much imagine his doing so even on campus. he is a grad student in management. i heard that MBA students have to dress up to some extent, but he really stands out for his formalty. he doesnt like american casuality and it seems to be something to do with his upbringing as well. but he is rather a rare exception.

i buy all my cloths from japan and i like cloths that are clean/neat, delicate, girlish, and feminine. but i think that there are some cultural differences in styles because i cannot find these kinds of cloths in the US very often. urban outfitters may be the closest in their detailedness and girlishness though. i feel that the american fashion tends be more dynamic and either more sexy or more casual. i like delicate styles that have lovely little details.

what i do not understand about some of american college girls is that some of them wear extremely sexy cloths and high heels at parties, and then they go back to the usual university sweatshirt, jeans, and beach sandals at school next day. sure, different cloths serve for different purposes. but i find this gap rather interesting, as i myself feel that fashion is like a part of everyday life.
but some of them are really cool at casual styles with jeans and sandals in comfortably relaxed ways, which i love to see.

finally, i had a german female friend who always wore very mature, sophisticated, tasteful cloths that I'd barely see either in japan or in the US. Shall i describe it as understated european style? her mom was an artist, which may explain a part of it. it went so well with her because she was very very tall and had a very mature face. unlike the american fashion trends, understated beauty is valued a lot in japanese fashion as well, but maturity is not so much. so i thought it really nice.

sorry i am kind of lost. i was trying to make the point that fashion seems to vary by the country where you are from as much as by the school major.

Long ago college student.. Just wanted to note that , in general, Americans dress more casually as compared to other nations. We are the land of jeans.

The college I went to back in the late 80's had a large international population. I was a member of the Chinese Student Society. ABC's tended to wear jeans except to formal parties - always neat, but not looking at labels. The undergrad Hong Kong contingent were much more label and fashion conscious - guys tended to wear all black at every party. The graduate students who were only in the US for school and planned to return to China dressed utilitarian - somewhat drab, didn't care about style.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with dressing neatly and fashionably, but that doesn't have go hand in hand with spending lots of money or label conscious. It can be done on a budget.

I would say lots of college students with extra money to dispense would spend on either drug/alcohol or fashion. This is based on my extremely personal experience, but lots of girls spend pretty large sum of money on designer purse, jeans, shoes, and make-up. I've also seen good number of guys who indulge on designer products. That said, there are always larger number of students with loose jeans and university hoodie on.
I identify myself more with 'fashion ppl'. I'd rather spend my hard-earned money on things that I enjoy

I think that's what most of us do. Personally? I'd rather go on a trip or get some new camera equipment than get the latest fashion that doesn't fit anything but a size -8

i know. when my american prof saw me in jeans for the first time, she said "you are finally americanized!" and looked quite happy (she wouldn't say that to every international but we worked together long enough for her to be able to comment on such things).

Speaking from my persepctive when i was a student 1996-2000 people over here (UK) generally wear casual clothes to university. Jeans t-shirts. Some people did wear designer clothes but they were mostly very wealthy students.

I think the university/college sweatshirt thing is a US phenomenon (sp?). While i have seen universoty sweatshirts on sale, no-one realyl bought them, and certainly didn't wear them. Perhaps people who had a greater involvement in sports at university did wear them but i didn't have any in my immediate or outer circle of friends. I think most students struggle with money and spending tons of money on designer clothes was not something they valued. Most money did seem to go on "socialising"!

interesting to hear.

the US universities sell all sorts of things and they may be making a lot of money out of these. they have cool designs collaborated with big brands such as NIKE and these products are not even cheap. when i first saw university/college sweatshirts in the US, i thought them cute!

but after seeing more than 10 same sweatshirts a day, i get tired of it and do not feel like wearing myself. i consider them to be a kind of school uniform. conisdering the importance of individualism in the american culture, this is a pretty interesting phenomenon.

yet, i think these products great for suveniors.

I don't have a UAA sweatshirt and I've been attending for 5 years (taking next semester/year off!) I have one for Biola University in SoCal (courtesy of my cousin who is attending my dream school), and I have one from the Western Culinary Institute of America (courtesy of my best friend who is an alumni now).

Only other sweatshirts I have are one from high school (senior year), and a couple from work... they're warm, comfy, and on days like today where I don't have to care until later how I look they work! :)
