Phaneuf fell three times? Isn't that what we normally call a disaster?

If we were talking about Rochette - yes. Phaneuf- no. This program was a big step up for her. Though she fell, she fully rotated those jumps and didn't pop, a great sign that her confidence is coming back. She also lost no steam in the presentation because of the falls. She looked really happy with her performance both during and afterwards — I've always found that makes a huge difference. Like during Leung's LP in this comp, she looked totally deflated and uninterested in skating. It couldn't help but impact the impression the program had.

Afraid so. Cynthia still has a long way to go. She will need much better to make top 10 in the World. Her technical content was not stellar in the SP or the LP here.

ETA: I agree with rain that it is a step forward from where Phaneuf was a couple of years ago though. Her growth spurt and injuries really took their toll. Sometimes, comebacks take baby steps.

It is positive however that she rotated everything, no pops, is gradually showing signs of more attack in her skating, and she did land 4 triples including a lutz. We'll take the positive

The Real Joannie showed up this afternoon. Congrats to the Five Time Canadian Champion!!

Way to go Cynthia!! That was a better performance from Skate Canada and she's only getting better. I've said all along this would be a two year thing if Cynthia made it all the way back and this is a big step up from where she was a year ago. Congratulations to her!!

I am so happy to read that Joannie won with a magnificent performance! Merveilleux!

I was hoping she would win with the Free Skate. You (the posters) have made my day!!! I had looked up the results, but reading the descriptions has really brought it home to me--everything I had hoped for in the Ladies' skate. Yes, I am a Joannie fan for some time now ;) . I find her athletic, sweet, and charming, and one year she did a remarkable "Firebird" that I shall always remember.

Joannie, here's looking at you!

( and hoping I get the chance to do just that lol--ah, YouTube!)

Already, it is a *good* day!

Right, you can't watch the live streaming feed if you're outside of Canada. Right now, the only performances available for those of us outside of Canada are the SPs videos of Chan & Duhamel/Buntin. It appears we will only be able to see the winning performances. I'm patiently awaiting Rochette's LP to become available.
I'm probably jinxing myself for the pairs short, but I'm watchin the on demand full event ladies short on the cbc site. And I'm in Brazil.
So, go before they take it away from us !

And I can't sing enough praise to the wonderful pbp'ers.

What a great thing for Joannie to skate like that! that 3/3 at the end is so cool when she does it clean. I hope this gives her the confidence for worlds!

I just saw Joannie and Cynthia on CBC. Joannie was perfect, landed everything. Cynthia had 3 falls but landed 2 triple toes,a triple loop, a triple lutz. I am glad Cynthia made the world team!!!

Just finished watching the Ladies LP on CBC. I have to say, I'm not impressed with the way they handled Joannie's victory. Immediately after her masterpiece of a skate, they cut to commercial with no gushing commentary like what was given to Patrick Chan after his SP. Brenda Irving barely congratulated her during her interview--instead she continued to grill Joannie about her short program and medal chances at world's. Joannie seemed understandably annoyed and said something close to "I can't talk about that, I just skated and I want to celebrate." It seems nothing she does is enough.

Yeah, I found this annoying as well. They barely acknowledged how well she skated. I also found it irritating (though I know they were trying to create drama) that they tried to make it sound as if there was a real rivalry happening, like there was a good chance Phaneuf was going to unseat Rochette. Realistically speaking, without a huge fluke (or five), this was not going to happen. Rochette has a world class LP while Phaneuf was trying to land approximately four of her triples (her stated goal).

Rise above it, Joannie. I believe in you!:bow:

It seems some in Canada don't realize how lucky they are to have Joannie. She's saved their a$$es at Worlds by ensuring them 2 spots every year since 2004 in Dortmund, when she placed 8th. In the past year, she has established herself as the most successful lady in all of North America on the world scene based on 2008-2009 results. I bet the USFSA would LOVE to have her!

I'm sure it will be on this site within 24 hours: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/figureskating/

They already have the winning SPs of Duhamel/Buntin & Patrick Chan. I'm positive Joannie's perfect LP will find its way there, too. YAY!!!!!!

Sorry, I'm having a blond moment. I can't seem to find Meagan and Craig's short program. Can someone help me with a direct link?

Congrats to Joannie! I've been cheering for her.

On this page: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/figureskating/ on the far right side of the screen, there is a gray shaded area that has "Featured Videos", and you can sort by "Latest" and "Most Viewed". Under "Latest", there are 5 videos currently and D/B's SP is the 3rd video. Hope that helps!

Oh well, never mind, I'm now getting a message that says "this content is not available." It was playing fine earlier today. Bummer! :(

Well, we can always check youtube. I know some SPs of the ladies have already found their way there.

Just want to throw out a congratulation to Joannie! Bravo!

I wasn't paying attention to that interview after her skate, but that sort of attitude from Canadian media does not surprise me - all about trying to create medal-hype or desperately trying to assert and reassure that we are worthy contenders (to the detriment sometimes of actually appreciating the sport)... blah blah blah...

as another poster said: Rise above it, Joannie!

A bit surprising to see her emotional after the skate, I think that is a first, she normally seems quite stoic (which translates into that controlled skating style, I suppose)

Also remember it was Brenda Irving doing that interview. She's not always the best when it comes to on the fly stuff like that and often harps on stuff that happened the day before when it's a two day competition. She's done it before, and not just to figure skaters either, and she'll do it again.

I see. I'm not at all familiar with Ms. Irving's other work, but most of the "non-specialist" sportscasters seem similar to me.
No doubt if it had been Kurt Browning down there for the interview, it would have been a nice high-fiving gush-fest of a celebration!
