First group has finished skating:

Cannuscio and McManus

I Want to Be Loved by You: Yes Sir That's my baby

I liked the dance spin, and the Charleston was better than the Marilyn Monroe part. Their leg lines and unison are not good and mixing 20's with 40's was a bad idea too.

OD Score: TES 24.97 PCS 17.14 Total 42.11 Overall 67.60

Bailey & Herring

Minnie the Moocher; Dancin Fool

He has on an orange shirt, black vest with purple lapels, striped blue & purple pants and a white hat with a black hat band. Very OTT 40's zoot suit. She's a bar girl in black net stockings and a negligee sort of outfit in various blue and purple tones. This was an excellent, coherent 40's OD and I really liked it. Such a shame they fell in the CD.

OD Score: TES 25.22 PCS 18.41 Total 43.63 Overall 68.49

Carey and Donigan

She's wearing a pale blue negliglee sort of dress. He's in black pants with black suspenders and a white shirt.

This dance will keep them in last place. They had neither speed nor unison. The twizzles and the dance spin were particularly terrible. She has nice body line in the lifts, though. And they didn't fall

TES 18.98 PCS 14.61 Total 33.59 Overall 51.10

Marshall & Deavers

My baby only cares for me; Boogie Bumper

He looks like Barney Fife in a dark gray shirt, fake undone bow tie, black pants and suspenders. She has a horrible chartreuse dress. They have a horrible fall and lose all connection to the music. That's if they had any to start with.

TES 16.77 PCS 13.87 Total 29.64 Ded -1.0 (fall) Overall 52.75

The Shibutani's had a great skate, considering it was delayed so long because of blood on the ice and then because of debris. The twizzles started out a little wonky but they got them on track fast.

Shibutani's!

Took forever for them to be able to start, there was debris on the ice, I was worrying that it would distract them. But it didn't.

Being only 14 I'm impressed with Maia's expression, she really got into the performance. Alex's first twizzle looked a little unsteady, but he got it together on the second set.

And they shoot into the lead!

In the Kiss and Cry, Maia said "we got 2 five minute warmups this time!"

Chock and Zuerlein are really fast. Ice coverage is what got Belbin and Agosto to the top of seniors, and it's obviously working well for C/Z. The last (unscored) lift was fantastic.

GROUP 2

Wingle & McKernan

Chicago Soundtrack (Isn't it Swell; Charleston)

He's in black pants with white pin stripeswith suspenders and white shirt, she's in a black lacy dress with a rag skirt & net stockings with round garters.

The intro, while part of the sountrack was not typical of the era. The Charleston was OK. Trouble on the twizzles. Really lost unison and separated. The last transitional lift was shaky.

She cut a finger.

tes 25.36 pcs 20.13 total 45.49 overall 74.41

Shibutani & Shibutani

Big Band Music from movie soundrtacks

There's blood all over the ice. Ref blew a whistle and Alex and Maia played Easter egg hunt on the ref's behalf picking up debris, sequins and so forth.

She's in the red dress. He's a a light gray shirt with red suspenders and black pant and an outstanding art deco Tie !!. This is much much better than at JGPF, mostly because she hasn't got a cut foot. The first F/W was gorgeous and went well with the music. Great dance spin. Good crowd and team interaction. Twizzles some problems, but at least they didn't fall on them. Probably didn't get level 4. The Rotational lift was exceptional with Alex rotating on one foot. They also got good breakaway swing action. Lots of fun.

TES 30.09 PCS 22.61 Total 52.70 Overalll 84.68

Chock & Zuerlein

20's and 30's dance music (mostly Charleston)

He's got a great 20's outfit-varsity sweater with black pants and Spats! She has a rag skirt in blue with a bodice reminiscent of Jill Trenary. Also a blue headband!

Best emotion I've seen from them. Great synchro twizzles. In fact everything good except the dance spin was a bit weak. Deserve their first place, but surprising lowere TES than Shibutanis. Very close score.

TES 29.53 PCS 23.36 Total 52.89 Overal 85.79

Tibbetts and Brubaker

L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole

He's wearing what appears to be a striped hernia corset over a black shirt. Either that or he has a baseball umpire shirt under his regular shirt (black) which is torn. She has a generic ice dance dress with a rag skirt in white and black with a pleasant large swirly pattern on it.

They're very pretty people with nice posture, but overall this was generic for me.

TES 26.78 PCS 20.41 Total 47.19 Overall 75.73

Cannuscio & Lorello

In the Mood; Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy

She's a a blue peasanty dress and he's in a mailman's uniform (?), well maybe a gas station attendant? the Maytag repairman?

Sue me; I loved it! Good speed, especially in the rotational lift. The twizzles were on one foot, reversing edge and directions. Very nice.. Tonia is complaining about toe point. Swing is not a toe point dance. Really, really good 40's feel. Maybe because Ron Ludington was alive then and remembers how the dances were?
Boo. I would have had them ahead of Tibbetts/Brubaker.

I hate these dresses. Seriously, can't we come up with something that at least resembles era-appropriate?

Swing is not a toe point dance.

It might not be in real life, but in ice dance everything is a toe point dance. You can be you'd fail your Blues/Midnight/Yankee Polka if you didn't point your toes. It's OK in some obviously swingy steps, but she should really at least be pointing her toes on the lifts.

Not so on the Yankee Polka. You are supposed to point your heel on the kick-it gives the kids fits because it isn't what they normally do.

Warm-up Group 3

Piper Gilles / Zachary Donohue

OD: "Go Daddy Go" & "Flat Foot Flugi", Sing, Sing, Sing choreography by Christopher Dean
First time I've seen this OD as they weren't at sectionals and no one youtubed their 2 JGP events. Does anyone know what a flat foot flugi is?
He's an army private who has apparently picked up a stripper in a bar. She's wearing a pink bra and an odd skirt. Her knee is still bandaged.
She stumbled in the starting moves. The twizzles were way far apart, they were in different positions, plus he put a foot down.. The F/W to the last piece of Sing Sing Sing was very good. She got it back together again..

TES 26.60 PCS 20.73 Total 47.33 Overall 76.83

Chloe Wolf / Rhys Ainsworth

OD: Friendship; Music from "Anything Goes"
She's in a very unflattering yellow halter dress. He's in a white shirt, vest with yellow pocket square and black pants. The only interesting part in this dance was when the singers starting quacking like ducks. Twizzles way off. They seemed slow and to be chasing the music.
TES 24.28 PCS 17.17 Total 41.45 Overall 68.12

Elyse Matsumoto / Patrick Mays

OD: Thoroughly Modern Millie (Charleston) and other selections
I'm not sure why he's dressed as Buddy Holly with the big black glasses frames. (white pleated shirt, black bow tie, brown patterned vest, black pants) She's in a teal blue flapper dress with a head band.
I can't remember a thing they did, either good or bad. Tonia thinks she has good toe point.
TES 26.54 pcs 18.86 total 45.40 overall 72.08

Charlotte Lichtman / Dean Copely

OD: I've Got Rhythm; Sweet Embraceable You
He's in a black and silver pinstriped pants and vest with a white shirt. She is in a black/silver flapper dress with a very bright ultramarine headband.
Good rotational lift.Smooth, but not very memorable.
TES 26.58 PCS 17.62 Total 44.20 Overall 70.26

Katie Wyble / Justin Morrow

OD: Sing, Sing, Sing (Swing); Minnie the Moocher (Blues)
He's in a black shirt with purple suspenders and black & silver pinstrip pants. She's wearing what looks like the cheerleaders' costumes from my old Junior High. In bright blue and white skirt with very wide boxy shaped pieces. The top is blue.. Some of the choreo in F/w, especially in the first sequence was quite interesting with squating positions and such. She collapsed on the end of the spin. They should drop a couple spots.

Which kick? The one with the hold break halfway through the second half of the pattern? I'd argue that that's one specific step unique to the dance, but the common dance steps still call for pointed feet. I definitely got chastised by the judges for not pointing my toe enough on the choctaw at least when I passed it, though, so maybe it varies regionally. They definitely look of toe-point on the "regular" dance steps (choctaws, swing rolls, etc. which aren't specific to the dance) around here...But I digress. That lift wasn't specific to swing, and her toe should have been pointed.

I notice that many couples are representing two different figure skating clubs. Is this common? Does one of them usually move across country to train, but still maintain allegiance to his or her original club?

There is a rule for Juvenile/Intermediate that the skater or team must skate out of the region that they train in, but that rule doesn't extend to novice and above. Usually one team member will join a club in another section so they can choose where they want to skate out of -- based on where they think other teams will skate out of and what will be easiest -- when it comes time to register. Some others have moved for training and maintain allegiance with their home club (Madison Chock and Maia Shibutani, for example) but strategy factors into most of the club allegiances.

Mathman, Yes. I've heard that they do this to game the regionals/sectionals qualification process for nationals. If you can assure that only 4 or fewer couples show up at an event, it is a straight pipe to the next step.

BTW, I just found out what a flat foot flugi with the floy floy is
